Adult's food label awareness: scale development and validation

Açikgöz, Inci; Köktürk, Seda Nur; Yardimci, Hulya

PurposeThis study aimed to develop and validate the Food Label Awareness Scale (FLAS) to comprehensively assess adults' food label reading habits and expectations.Design/methodology/approachThe FLAS was developed based on a literature review and expert input. Initial item generation was followed by expert evaluations for content and face validity. Data were collected through structured face-to-face interviews using the preliminary version of the FLAS and a sociodemographic questionnaire. A total of 300 adults aged 20-65 years participated. Food label awareness was assessed based on the three subdimensions: (1) product packaging and ingredients, (2) nutrition and health and (3) product brand. In addition, participants' age, gender and education level were recorded. Cronbach's alpha assessed internal consistency. Reliability was supported by comparing the highest and lowest 27% of total scores. Associations between demographics and subdimension scores were tested using appropriate statistical methods.FindingsThe finalized 18-item FLAS demonstrated a three-factor structure with acceptable model fit and internal consistency. Older adults had higher awareness of packaging and ingredients. Lower education was associated with greater reliance on product brand.Research limitations/implicationsA primary limitation is the geographically restricted sample, which may limit the generalizability of the findings.Originality/valueThis study is original in developing a valid and reliable scale specifically measuring adults' awareness of food label reading - an area less explored in the literature, which mostly emphasizes general nutrition knowledge or label reading frequency.

Death Literacy Index Short Form: Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation of the Turkish Version

Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Sönmez Sarı, Ebru; Seven, Ahmet

The aim of this study was to adapt the short form of Death Literacy Index (DLI-9) into Turkish and to examine its psychometric properties. This study has a methodological cross-sectional design. The study was conducted with a sample of 400 adults across Türkiye during October-November. Content Validity Index, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Convergent and Discriminant Validity Analyses, test-retest reliability, Cronbach’s α-coefficient, item-total-score correlation, 27% upper-lower-group item analysis and Hotelling-T2test were used in data analysis. In the EFA analysis, the scale consisted of 2 factors. The original two-factor structure of the scale was confirmed by CFA. CFA model fit values were found as CMIN/DF = 2.078, RMSEA = 0.074, RMR = 0.077, SRMR = 0.0455, CFI = 0.960, NFI = 0.927, TLI = 0.945, GFI = 0.946, and AGFI = 0.906. The total Cronbach’s α reliability coefficient of the DLI-9 was found to be 0.84. This study indicates that scale is a reliable tool for evaluating death literacy in the Turkish population.

Validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the transition of primiparas becoming mothers scale

Kirbaş, Zila Özlem; Odabaşi Aktaş, Elif; Özkan, Hava

Background: The transition to motherhood is an important life event in a woman’s life and represents an important developmental process that brings physical, psychological and social changes to gain a new role. However, research on the transition to motherhood in Turkish society is scarce. There is a need for a comprehensive, practical and reliable tool to evaluate the transition to motherhood in primiparous mothers. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Transition of Primiparous Becoming Mothers Scale (TMP-S) to evaluate the transition process of primiparous mothers to motherhood. Methods: This methodological research was carried out in obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinics, pediatric outpatient clinics, and family health centers of a hospital in Türkiye. The sample consisted of primiparous mothers of 0 to 6- month-old babies who visited clinics and family health centers for routine postnatal examinations (n = 305). After evaluating the language equivalence and content validity of the scale, test-retest reliability, internal consistency and construct validity were examined. Factor analysis, Pearson’s correlation, retest reliability, and Cronbach’s alpha were employed to evaluate structural validity and reliability. Results: The final TPM-S had two dimensions with 25 items. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution, which accounted for 59.276% of the variance. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model fit of the two-factor model also reached a satisfactory model ft after modification. The comparative fit index was 0.894, the Tucker‒Lewis index was 0.882, and the root mean square error of approximation was 0.079. The content validity index of the scale ranged from 0.56 ~ 0.77. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was 0.93 for the total scale, and the test–retest reliability was 0.96. Conclusions: It is a valid and reliable tool for evaluating the transition to motherhood among primiparous mothers of 0 to 6 month-old babies in Türkiye. Turkish researchers and healthcare professionals can routinely apply this measurement tool to primiparous mothers in the first six months after birth to evaluate their transition to motherhood.

Cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the Turkish version of the Smombie Scale for Adolescents

Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Temel Mert, Zeynep; Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Sevgil Atli, Pelin

Background: Smombie has become an important problem especially in terms of adolescent health. The aim of this study was to translate the Smombie Scale for Adolescents (SSA) into Turkish and to examine its psychometric properties. Methods: This study has a methodological design. The study was conducted between March and April 2024. The sample of the study consisted of 430 adolescents. The data were collected by using Personal Information Form and SSA. Content Validity Index, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), test−retest reliability, Cronbach's α coefficient, item-total score correlation, 27% upper−lower group item analysis and Hotelling T2 test were used in data analysis. Results: The four-factor structure of the scale showed a good fit in CFA (chi-square minimum discrepancy [CMIN] = 187.463, degrees of freedo (DF) = 83, CMIN/DF = 2.259, root mean square error of approximation = 0.054, root mean square residual = 0.033, goodness of fit index = 0.947, adjusted goodness of fit index = 0.923, normed fit index = 0.930, tucker-lewis index = 0.949 and comparative fit index = 0.959). Cronbach's α coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.86. The item-total score correlation of the scale was found between 0.212 and 0.721. The test-retest intraclass correlation coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.876. Conclusions: This study shows that the scale is a reliable tool for assessing adolescents' smombie tendencies. It is thought that the scale will contribute to the protection and development of adolescent health.
