- MakaleAçık Erişim2024Scopus SJRQ2Antioxidant activity and phenolic composition of propolis from Marmara region, Turkey
Can, Zehra; Kara, Yakup; Kolayli, Sevgi; Çakmak, Ibrahim
This study investigated various properties of raw propolis samples from Marmara region of Turkey. Total phenolic content (TPF), total flavonoid (TFC) values, condensed tannin content (CTC) and phenolic profiles of ethanolic extracts (70%) were analyzed. Antioxidant activities were tested using the Ferric (III) reduction/antioxidant capacity (FRAP) and 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging methods. Phenolic profiles of the samples were analyzed using high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC-UV) method. TPC, TFC and CTC values in the samples ranged from 52.9 to 203.5 mg GAE/g, 13.6 to 43.9 mg QUE/g, and 2.0 and 2.9 mg CTE/g, respectively. Caffeic acid phenyl ester (CAPE), chrysin, pinocembrin, rutin, and t-cinnamic acid were detected as the common phenolic components in all samples. In conclusion, Marmara region propolis is a rich source of bioactive compounds, especially flavonoids with antioxidant properties.

The electrooxidation process, one of the advanced oxidation processes, is one of the effective treatment processes used in treating various industrial wastewaters. This study investigated the treatment of olive mill wastewater using the electrooxidation process. This study includes the effects of different experimental parameters on chemical oxygen demand and total phenol removal efficiencies in olive mill wastewater. Ti/IrO2/RuO2 mesh plates as anode material and Ti mesh plates as cathode material were used in the study. The effects of stirring rate, dilution factor, pH, type of support electrolyte, the concentration of support electrolyte, and current density on chemical oxygen demand and total phenol removal efficiencies were examined in the experiments using a batch reactor. The study found that the chemical oxygen demand and total phenol removal rates were 96.93% and 100% under optimum conditions, respectively. According to the treatment data obtained, it can be said that olive mill wastewater can be treated by the electrooxidation method and can be proposed as a pretreatment system before entering biological treatment.

- MakaleYalnız künye2020Scopus SJRQ1Comparison of phenol removal with ozonation in jet loop reactor and bubble column

This study aimed to remove phenol with ozonation in a jet loop reactor (JLR) and a bubble column (BC). In the first stage of the study, the mass transfer properties of JLR were determined and superiority over BC reactors were shown, and in the second stage, these reactors were used in phenol removal studies. At the same conditions, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient of JLR was 0.540 min-1, while this value was determined as 0.246 min-1 in the BC reactor. In phenol removal, the effects of initial phenol concentration, ozone dosage and pH on phenol and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were determined for both JLR and BC. While the pseudo-first rate constant for phenol removal in JLR at 221 mg/min ozone dosage was 0.1756 min-1, this value was only calculated as 0.1157 min-1 in the BC reactor. As a result, it has been shown that JLRs can achieve higher ozone gas transfer with lower energy consumption and perform more effective phenol and COD removal than BC reactors, especially at low pH and high ozone dosages.

- MakaleYalnız künye2008Scopus SJRQ1The removal of lignin and phenol from paper mill effluents by electrocoagulation
Uǧurlu, M.; Gürses, A.; Doǧar, Ç.; Yalçin, M.
This study aims to investigate the treatment of paper mill effluents using electrocoagulation. Removal of lignin, phenol, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) from paper mill effluents was investigated at various current intensities by using different electrodes (Al and Fe) and at various electrolysis times (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 min). It was observed that the experiments carried out at 12 V, an electrolysis time of 2 min and a current intensity of 77.13 mA were sufficient for the removal of these pollutants with each electrode. The removal capacities of the process using an Al electrode were 80% of lignin, 98% of phenol, 70% of BOD, and 75% of COD after 7.5 min. Using an Fe electrode the removal capacities were 92%, 93%, 80% and 55%, respectively. In addition, it was found that removal of lignin, phenol, BOD and COD increased with increasing current intensity. In the experiments carried out at different current intensities, higher removal can be explained through a decrease in intra-resistance of solution and consequently an increase at the transfer speed of organic species to electrodes. It was also found that Al electrode performs higher efficiency than Fe electrode except for COD removal. However, the time required for removal of BOD was more than that of COD. The results suggest that electrocoagulation could be considered as an effective alternative to paper mill effluents treatment.
