Investigation of interior seed effects on levitation force in Melt-Grown YBCO superconductors by experimental and numerical methods

Öztürk, Ufuk Kemal; Abderrahmane, Babe Cheikh; Uzun, Oğuzhan; Abdioğlu, Murat; Güner, Sait Barış; Quéval, Loïc

This study introduces a novel Top-Interior Multi-Seeding Melt Growth (TI-MSMG) technique for fabricating high-performance YBCO bulk superconductors and explanations some physical background based on FEM modelling. The depth of the interior seed was gradually changed as 0, 2 and 4 mm (samples S0, S2 and S4, respectively) from the upper surface of the samples. By incorporating an interior seed into the precursor pellet, the TI-MSMG method enables systematic control over grain morphology and critical current density distribution. Magnetic levitation and guidance forces were measured using a three-axis force measurement system, and a two-dimensional finite element method (FEM) model based on the H-formulation of Maxwell’s equations was developed to simulate the electromagnetic behaviour of the superconductors with different seed positions. Experimental and modelling results reveal that samples incorporating an interior seed (S2) exhibit significantly enhanced levitation and guidance forces compared to S0 and S4, attributable to improved inter-domain interactions and morphological consistency, so a better current coupling. The numerical simulations accurately reproduced the experimental findings, confirming the validity of the modelling approach. These findings indicate that the TI-MSMG process not only addresses some limitations of conventional top-seeding methods but also enhances levitation force performance through optimization of interior seed depth, thereby enabling more efficient and tailored designs for high-temperature superconducting systems such as magnetic levitation, energy storage, and superconducting motors.

Magnetic Force Performance of Hybrid Multisurface HTS Maglev System With Auxiliary Onboard PMs

Ozturk, U. Kemal; Abdioglu, Murat; Mollahasanoglu, Hakki

The vertical levitation force, guidance force, and magnetic stiffness values, and thus the loading capacity and movement stability of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) Maglev systems, are aimed to be increased in this study by using auxiliary permanent magnets (PMs) in the onboard unit together with the multisurface HTS-permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangement (hybrid multisurface arrangement). First, the magnetic levitation force, guidance force, and stiffness performances of the hybrid multisurface arrangement were investigated at different field cooling heights (FCH). Then, to compensate for the negation of instability that results from the higher repulsive force between the onboard PMs and the PMG and to obtain an optimal magnetic field medium, we have changed the vertical position of the auxiliary onboard PMs (ZPM) to ZPM = 0, 2, and 4 mm, at the cost of a bit of adecrement in the vertical levitation force. The bigger levitation force, together with the guidance force values for FCH = 25 mm and ZPM = 0 mm, indicates that the hybrid multisurface HTS-PMG arrangements are beneficial to increasing the practical applicability of Maglev systems.

Enhancing magnetic levitation and guidance force and weight efficiency of high-temperature superconducting maglev systems by using sliced bulk YBCO

Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, U. Kemal; Guner, Sait Baris; Ozturk, Mehmet; Mollahasanoglu, Hakki; Yanmaz, Ekrem

We aimed to enhance the magnetic force efficiency of Maglev systems without increasing total weight. For this aim, we divided YBCO bulks into three slices horizontally to utilize the YBCO-permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) interaction surface as much as possible. We used whole YBCO above PMGs with different magnetic pole directions (PMG-A and PMG-B) in two lying positions of transversal and longitudinal and investigated levitation and guidance force performances. It is determined that levitation and guidance forces by using YBCO in transversal lying mode are bigger compared to the longitudinal mode. For sliced YBCO, the maximum levitation force increased by 69% and 78%, while the guidance force enhancements are determined as 212% and 91%, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-A and PMG-B, respectively. The levitation and guidance force density with respect to the total mass of unit a set of slices YBCO increased by 92% and 106%, respectively, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-B in transversal mode. Since the higher levitation force and the lower total weight of the onboard unit are important parameters in point of the energy efficiency in Maglev and other levitation applications, the result of this study supplies useful data for the engineers and industrial partners.

Extended 2-D Magnetic Field Modeling of Linear Motor to Investigate the Magnetic Force Parameters of High-Speed Superconducting Maglev

Ozturk, Ufuk Kemal; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozkat, Erkan Caner; Mollahasanoglu, Hakki

A 2-D numerical finite-element model of a linear synchronous motor (LSM) is extended based on the magnetic field and moving mesh properties to investigate the magnetic flux and magnetic force characteristics of the high-speed electromagnetic levitation Maglev system, by using high-temperature superconductor (HTS) coils rather than lower current-carrying copper coils on the onboard unit and permanent magnets (PMs) on the ground. In this 2-D LSM model, the transient time-dependent solver is used to obtain the magnetic flux densities. Both the propulsion and levitation forces increased with increasing supercurrent Jc0 values indicating the advantage of using the superconducting windings in PM-LSM of Maglev vehicles as compared with the copper wires. It was also determined that, although the propulsion force is obtained on a comparable level with the studies in the literature, the lower levitation force issue than the electrodynamic suspension (EDS), despite the better propulsion to levitation force ratio, can be overcome by using the high flux trapping capacity bulk HTSs on the onboard unit together with the superconducting coils. The determined higher propulsion force in this PM-LSM Maglev model indicates that the Maglev vehicle can reach higher velocities in a short distance, and thus, this vehicle can be effectively used in short-distance travels in addition to the long-distance transportation. On the other hand, since the EDS system to be accelerated in a certain time interval via conventional wheels to achieve sufficient levitation, PM-LSM system can be integrated into the EDS Maglev system to ensure higher acceleration in a short time interval in addition to the higher levitation and propulsion force performances.

Bulk MgB2 superconductor for levitation applications fabricated with boron processed by different routes

    Savaskan, B.; Ozturk, U. K.; Guner, S. B.; Abdioglu, M.; Bahadir, M. V.; Acar, S.; Somer, M.; Ionescu, A. M.; Locovei, C.; Enculescu, M.

Bulk MgB2 discs were prepared by an in situ route from mixtures of magnesium and boron powders. The boron powders were produced by two methods. The first one consisted of a self-propagating high tem-perature magnesiothermic synthesis (SHS) process followed by acid and fluorine cleaning and a heat treatment in inert atmosphere. This approach produced boron with purities between 86 % and 97 %, where the main impurity was Mg. Depending on the final heat treatment, these boron powders were amorphous or crystalline. In the second route, high purity nano powders (99 %) of boron were obtained by a diborane pyrolysis process. Bulks of MgB2 were characterized by structural, microstructural, and magnetic mea-surements. Critical current density, pinning force aspects and levitation force (including guiding force) details were assessed. Amorphous lower purity boron (86-97 %) obtained by the first processing route was found to promote the largest levitation forces of the MgB2 bulks and, among these samples, the best le-vitation results were recorded when using boron with a purity of 95-97 %. Use of a lower purity boron that decreases the cost of MgB2 promotes large scale production at industrial level of bulk MgB2 super-conducting magnets for levitation applications and enhances the applicability potential of MgB2 super-conductor. The relationship between levitation force and specific features of the samples such as pinning force details are discussed.& COPY; 2023 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Magnetic levitation force and trapped field properties of multiseeded YBCO with triangular arrangement of seeds

Abdioglu, Murat; Guner, Sait Baris; Ozturk, Kemal; Yang, Chiaming; Chen, Ingann; Celik, Sukru

Although there are studies in literature using different number of seeds with different arrangements, especially line and rectangular, it is seen that there is no detailed study handling the levitation force together with trapped field properties of triangular arrangement of seed in YBCO. Therefore, to further investigate the magnetic properties of seeded YBCO superconductors, we have fabricated cylindrical YBCO (YBa2Cu3O7) superconductors with triangular arrangement of the seeds with different seed distances. Maximum levitation force values were obtained as 39.4 N and 57.1 N, while the maximum guidance force values were obtained as −4.6 N, and −8.7 N, respectively, with single-seeded and triangular-seeded samples with seed distance of 14 mm. It was determined that the trapped field, levitation force, and guidance force firstly decreased from the single-seeded sample to the triangular-seeded sample with small seed distance and then increased with increasing seed distance. Increased field trapping and levitation force performances in the triangular-seeded samples with suitable seed distance indicate that the triangular arrangement of seeds is an eligible method to produce larger dimension YBCO samples with bigger shielding current radius and bigger averaged trapped field values.

Magnetic levitation force performance of benzil added bulk MgTi0,06B2 superconductors

    Abdioglu, Murat

MgB2 superconductors can be proposed as a good candidate for Maglev systems due to their superior structural and superconducting properties. Besides, magnetic levitation and guidance force properties of these superconductors should be increased for commercial applications of Maglev systems. Therefore, the critical current density and magnetic levitation and guidance force properties of MgTi0.06B2 superconducting samples were investigated in this study, at measurement temperatures of 20 K and 25 K, depending on benzil (C14H10O2) addition in different adding amounts of 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, 6 and 9 wt%. In addition to benzil, nanometer-sized silver particles were added to the samples in a constant ratio of 2 wt% to enhance the structural properties. The maximum critical current density values increased from 67 kA/cm2 for pure sample to 92 kA/cm2 with benzil adding amount of 3 wt% at T = 20 K, indicating an increment of 37%. In addition, the levitation force in ZFC (zero field cooling) regime and the guidance force in FC (field cooling) regime at 20 K increased at an amount of 46% and 57%, respectively, with 3% benzil addition. It can be said that the suitable amount of benzil addition as a carbon source produces additional pinning centres inside the MgTi0.06B2 and thus structural properties, critical current density and therefore, magnetic levitation properties of the samples are increased.

Design and Experimental Studies on Superconducting Maglev Systems with Multisurface HTS-PMG Arrangements

Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, Kemal; Ekici, Mehmet; Savaskan, Burcu; Celik, Sukru; Cansiz, Ahmet

In this article, we have designed and constructed a new multisurface (MS) high temperature superconductor (HTS) Maglev measurement system to investigate the enhancement of magnetic force properties of Maglev systems via MS HTS configurations above conventional permanent magnetic guideway (PMG). We have investigated both the static force and stiffness behavior and dynamic response characteristics of these MS HTS-PMG arrangements in different field cooling heights (FCHs). Optimum cooling height is determined as FCH 20-30 for both six- and four-HTS configurations. The maximum levitation force values of HTS-PMG arrangement with six-HTS were obtained bigger than that of four-HTS in the unit cryostat volume of MS arrangement, indicating that the HTSs at the bottom side of the cryostat make contribution to the loading capacity of Maglev systems. In the present article, it is observed that the magnetic flux density of bottom surface in addition to upper surface of the PMG can make a contribution to loading performance, vertical and lateral stability of Maglev systems. It is thought that the designed measurement facility and results of this study will be beneficial to increase the magnetic flux density in the unit volume via MS HTS-PMG arrangements for future design and construction of the HTS Maglev systems.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Levitation Force Parameters of Novel Multisurface Halbach HTS-PMG Arrangement for Superconducting Maglev System

Ozturk, Kemal; Badia-Majos, Antonio; Abdioglu, Murat; Dilek, Durukan Burak; Gedikli, Hasan

We have designed multisurface Halbach high temperature superconductor-permanent magnetic guideway (HTS-PMG) arrangements for magnetically levitated transportation (Maglev) and investigated the static force parameters in addition to the dynamic response characteristics. Three different Halbach HTS-PMG arrangements were used with multisurface (6 HTS, 4 HTS) and single surface (2 HTS) configurations and static and dynamic measurements were carried out in three different field cooling heights (FCHs). The bigger vertical loading capacity and wider loading gap were obtained with multisurface Halbach HTS-PMG arrangements. In addition, nearly four times bigger guidance force values of multisurface arrangements than that of single surface one indicates that the side HTSs in multisurface arrangements make a significant contribution to the guidance force and thus lateral movement stability of Maglev systems. Both the vertical and lateral dynamic stiffness values increased with decreasing FCH and it can be also said that the dynamic stiffness properties of Maglev systems can be enhanced especially in lateral direction by using the multisurface Halbach HTS-PMG arrangements. Understanding of these experimental observations is supported by dedicated theoretical modelling through a 2-D approximation of the system. We show that by using a single material parameter (the critical current density J_bf c) for the whole superconducting set, one may satisfactorily predict the complete series of experiments. The static and dynamic parameters obtained from this study and the results of dedicated theoretical modeling for single-surface and multisurface HTS-PMG arrangements are thought to be helpful for the researchers working on static and dynamic performances of HTS Maglev systems.

Comparing of the Magnetic Force Parameters of Superconducting Maglev System Using Horizontal and Vertical PMG Geometry in Multi-Surface HTS-PMG Arrangement

Ozturk, Kemal; Savaskan, Burcu; Abdioglu, Murat; Cansiz, Ahmet; Dilek, Durukan Burak; Karaahmet, Zekeriya

In this study, a detailed static and dynamic experimental studies were carried out in different cooling heights (CH) by using two different multi-surface HTS-PMG arrangements with horizontal (MS-H) and vertical (MS-V) geometries to determine the optimum magnetic force, static stiffness, dynamic response, and dynamic stiffness parameters of superconducting Maglev system. The maximum levitation force values (in CH = 25 mm) were obtained as 202 N and 84 N, respectively, with horizontal and vertical geometry HTS-PMG arrangements, while the maximum guidance force values (in CH = 5 mm) were obtained as −58 N and −22 N, respectively. Also, the vertical static (in CH = 25 mm) and dynamic stiffness (in CH = 5 mm) values were determined as 33.8 N/mm and 37.8 N/mm, respectively, for MS-H and 12.3 N/mm and 25.1 N/mm, respectively, for MS-V arrangements. The bigger levitation force, guidance force, and both static and dynamic magnetic stiffness values of MS-H arrangement with horizontal geometry than that of MS-V arrangement with vertical geometry indicate that the horizontal HTS-PMG geometry is more suitable for practical Maglev applications in terms of loading capacity and movement stability.

Superconducting and levitation force characterisation of pyrene added MgB2 bulk superconductors

Erdem, Ozge; Guner, Sait Baris; Celik, Sukru; Kucukomeroglu, Tayfur

This research presents the influence of pyrene (C16H10) addition (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 wt%) on the superconducting properties of bulk MgB2. For C16H10 added MgB2 samples, a shrinkage in a-lattice parameters was determined, whereas c-lattice parameters remained practically unchanged. The (1 1 0) peak observed at 2θ ≈ 59.9◦ slightly shifted to higher angles, the lattice strain increased and the crystallite size reduced after C16H10 addition. By virtue of induced stronger pinning force, the in-field critical current density (Jc) increased after C16H10 addition. The Jc value at 20 K and 4 T was obtained about two times higher (8.54 × 103 A/cm2) for 4 wt% C16H10 added MgB2 sample than that of the pure one. In addition, the variation of levitation force characteristic of MgB2 with increasing C16H10 content was determined at 20, 25 and 30 K. The best vertical levitation force performance in zero-field-cooled regime was obtained as 7.09 N/g at 20 K for 4 wt% C16H10 added MgB2 sample with 13 mm in diameter.

Determination of magnetic levitation force properties of bulk MgB2 for different permanent magnetic guideways in different cooling heights

Savaskan, Burcu; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozturk, Kemal

In our study as different from the literature, the magnetic levitation force between a bulk MgB2 and two different permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements, which are Halbach and Conventional PMGs, were investigated in different cooling heights (CHs) and Field-Cooled (FC) condition at the temperatures of 37 K and 33 K. The cylindrical bulk MgB2 superconductor was fabricated by in-situ solid state reaction process with the diameter of 18 mm and the height of 5 mm. The XRD data indicates well developed MgB2 phase and the Jc value was obtained as 68 kA/cm2 at 30 K in the self-field. Experimental results show that MgB2 bulk above the Halbach PMG can exhibit better load capability at all the cooling heights between the bulk MgB2 and the PMG due to a more suitable magnetic field distribution. The maximum levitation force for Halbach PMG corresponds to 16.86 N whereas the conventional PMG shows 9.02 N at 37 K in cooling height of 77 mm. Additionally, the maximum levitation force increases while the CH increases because flux exclusion is more effective for larger CHs. It is considered that the experimental results obtained in study are very useful for future Maglev applications, because there are limited number of studies on magnetic levitation force of MgB2 bulk for different MgB2-PMG arrangements.

Magnetic force and stiffness performances of Maglev system based on multi–surface arrangements with three-seeded bulk YBaCuO superconductors

    Ozturk, K.; Abdioglu, M.; Karaahmet, Z.

We have designed a multi–surface HTS (high temperature superconductor with three seeded bulk YBaCuO) Maglev system by increasing the YBaCuO number while decreasing the PM number in HTS–PMG system to enhance the loading capacity and stability of the superconducting Maglev system while reducing the fabrication cost. By this study, a detailed investigation on the magnetic levitation force, guidance force, magnetic stiffness and cost analysis of the multi–surface HTS Maglev system has been carried out for the first time. In this study, it is determined that the multi–surface YBaCuO–PMG arrangements are superior to the single–surface arrangements with respect to the loading capacity and especially the movement stability of Maglev systems together. Additionally, it is seen that the using of the multi–surface YBaCuO–PMG arrangement reduces the fabrication cost of the Maglev systems as 42.0% for 1000 km magnetic rail while increasing of the levitation force efficiency as 43.4% and this emphasizes the advantage of multi–surface arrangements to the classical single–surface ones. The obtained results can contribute to the researchers working on Maglev and have a capability to increase the usage potential of Maglev systems in commercial applications because of both the loading capacity and stability of Maglev systems can be enhanced together with reducing the fabrication cost without any loss in levitation performance.

An analysis on the relation between the seed distance and vertical levitation force for the multi−seeded YBCO using the modified advanced frozen image (MAFI) and experimental methods

    Ozturk, K.; Guner, S.B.; Abdioglu, M.; Demirci, M.; Celik, S.; Cansiz, A.

The higher magnetic levitation force and related stiffness values are very important for Maglev and magnetic bearing applications. Also, larger superconducting surface area is needed for continuous and larger magnetic mediums with different geometries and dimensions in real scale industrial applications of superconducting systems. In this study, the cylindrical YBCO superconductors were fabricated by top−seeded melt growth (TSMG) method in single and two−seeded forms with different seed distances and then the magnetic force and stiffness measurements were carried out by three axes magnetic force measurement system in different cooling heights (CH) of 20 mm and 75 mm. Additionally, a new analytical method, based on the magnetic dipole approximation, is proposed to calculate the levitation force in this study, named as Modified Advanced Frozen Image Method (MAFI), since although the Advanced Frozen Image Method in literature can calculate the levitation force with hysteresis, this method does not include the size effect of the superconductor. In the experimental studies, it is seen that the maximum levitation force values obtained by PMG with three PMs (named PMG−1) are more than two times higher than that of obtained with single PM for all samples with different distance of seeds, because of the higher magnetic flux distribution of related PMG arrangement than the single PM. In addition, the maximum magnetic levitation force value firstly increased and then decreased due to current coupling effect weakness by increasing distance of seeds. The calculated analytical levitation force results are not compatible with the experimental results without current coupling effect, but a well agreement is observed when the current coupling effect is taken into account in calculations. Also the MAFI method was tested with different dimensions of superconductors and the obtained results indicated the success of the proposed method. The maximum levitation force values obtained with MAFI method increased with increasing dimensions of HTS and PMs. Thus, one can say that the MAFI method is useful for the levitation force calculations between multi−seeded superconductors and PMGs with different dimensions and for different CHs. As a result, the analytical levitation force values obtained with the MAFI method are agree with the experimental levitation force sufficiently and this method can give fast calculation results without any divergence problem. This method can be thought as an alternative to the numerical calculation methods, having serious divergence problems for much amount and bigger size superconducting samples, therefore it will be useful to clarify bulk superconducting properties as supporter to the experimental studies.

Levitation and guidance force relaxations of the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCO superconductors

    Abdioglu, M.; Ozturk, K.; Kabaer, M.; Ekici, M.

The stable levitation and guidance forces at higher force levels are important parameters for technological applicability of high temperature superconductors (HTSs) in Maglev and Flywheel energy storage systems. In this study, we have investigated the levitation and guidance force relaxation of both the single-seeded and multi-seeded YBCOs for different (HTS)−permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements in different cooling heights (CH). The measured saturated force values of Halbach PMG arrangements are bigger than the maximum force values of other PMGs. It is determined that the normalized magnetic levitation force (MLF) and normalized guidance force (GF) relaxation rate values decrease while the relaxation rates increase with increasing magnetic pole number and the effective external magnetic field area for both the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCO. Also it can be said that the force stability at the higher force value of Halbach PMG arrangement indicates that the relaxation quality of Halbach PMG is better than that of the others. Additionally, it can be said that both the MLF and GF relaxation qualities of the multi−seeded YBCOs are better than that of the single−seeded ones. This magnetic force and relaxation results of the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCOs are useful to optimize the loading capacity and lateral reliability of HTS Maglev and similar magnetic bearing systems.

Lateral Position Effect of Auxiliary Permanent Magnets on the Magnetic Force Properties of Cylindrical YBCO

    Abdioglu, M.; Kabaer, M.; Ozturk, K.; Erdem, O.; Celik, S.

The magnetic levitation force (MLF) and the guidance force (GF) should be improved for loading capacity and stability of Maglev systems, respectively. Although there are some ways to increase these properties, using of auxiliary onboard permanent magnets (PMs) can be considered as the most efficient one. The auxiliary PMs increase the MLF significantly but, at the same time, decrease the GF. We have searched a solution to overcome this problem in this study. Firstly, we have determined the optimum vertical positions of the auxiliary PMs and then we have investigated the vertical levitation force and lateral guidance force of hybrid Maglev system depending on lateral position of auxiliary PMs in different cooling heights (CHs). A cylindrical YBCO superconductor, fabricated by a top seeding method with the diameter of 45 mm and the height of 15 mm, was used as a high-temperature superconductor (HTS). The maximum increment rate in MLF and the minimum decrement rate in GF were observed as 277 and 54 %, respectively. The increment in MLF was obtained five times more than the decrement in GF, and this reality points out that the results of this study can be useful for improving the loading capacity and thus enhancing the practical applicability of Maglev systems.

Improvement in levitation force performance of bulk MgB2 superconductors through coronene powder adding

    Erdem, O.; Abdioglu, M.; Guner, S.B.; Celik, S.; Kucukomeroglu, T.

The effect of coronene (C24H12) addition on the levitation force properties of MgB2 superconductor has been investigated for the first time in this study. The polycrystalline disk-shaped MgB2 + y wt % C24H12 samples (y = 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10), were synthesized by a pellet/closed tube method at 850 °C under Ar atmosphere, after hot pressing at 200 °C. XRD analysis indicates a decrease in lattice parameters of coronene added samples and confirms substitution of carbon in boron sites. An increase in lattice strain and a decrease in grain size are observed due to the carbon substitution effect. Vertical and lateral levitation force measurements under zero-field-cooled and field-cooled regimes were carried out at different temperatures of 20, 25 and 30 K. It was found that the coronene addition significantly increases the high-field critical current density of MgB2. The Jc values were obtained as 4.6 × 103 Acm−2 and 1.3 × 104 Acm−2 for pure and 4 wt % coronene added samples at 20 K and 4 T. In addition, the levitation force measurements show that 4 wt % coronene adding is very effective in increasing both the vertical and lateral levitation force performances at 20 K. The maximum levitation force for 4 wt % coronene added sample corresponds to 7.58 N/g whereas the reference sample shows 6.73 N/g at 20 K in ZFC regime. The results point out that the hydrocarbon of C24H12 is an effective carbon-containing additive for MgB2 and can be useful for optimizing the levitation performance of MgB2 superconductors for potential applications.

Clarification of magnetic levitation force and stability property of multi-seeded YBCO in point of supercurrent coupling effect

    Ozturk, K.; Kabaer, M.; Abdioglu, M.; Patel, A.; Cansiz, A.

In our study as different from the literature, which are mostly related to superconductor fabrication, application and optimization, especially physical origins of bulk supercurrent generation, magnetic levitation and stability properties of the multi-seeded YBCO superconductor are investigated in point of supercurrent coupling effect. Besides the experimental measurements, a simplified simulation of the supercurrent coupling in the multi-seeded bulk YBCO is carried out based on the experimental J(c)(B) data taken from literature and using the critical state method and H-formulation together in COMSOL Multiphysics package, to further elucidate the mechanism of supercurrent generation and guidance force. The bigger guidance force and lateral magnetic stiffness values of PMG-B arrangement with three B-z peaks than the other arrangements with one Bz peak in small cooling height of 5 mm are attributed to the more robust individual intragrain supercurrents, rather than intergrain supercurrent, due to the position coincidence in the z-direction between grains and permanent magnet poles. Additionally, it can be said that PMG-C arrangement with one Bz peak getting to the maximum guidance force value when the cooling height increase from 5 mm to 15 mm, points out for large cooling height the intergrain supercurrents dominate, whereas for the small cooling height the intragrain supercurrents have most effect on the guidance force. Also, performed the supercurrent simulations, using different current flow constraint ratio f (or supercurrent coupling parameter), clearly reproduced the qualitative change in the trapped field profile when the allowed intergrain current compared to no intergrain current (f = 0). It is thought that the presented results, related to the supercurrent generation, coupling mechanism and their effect on levitation and lateral force properties, have utilization potential for researches not only they study on new multiseed superconductor fabrication method, but also they study on superconductor applications. Comparative study of the magnetic stiffness, levitation and guidance force properties of single and multi seeded YBCOs for different HTS-PMG arrangements

    Ozturk, K.; Sahin, E.; Abdioglu, M.; Kabaer, M.; Celik, S.; Yanmaz, E.; Kucukomeroglu, T.

Abstract It is crucial to improve the magnetic levitation, guidance and stiffness performances of the HTS Maglev systems for real-scale applications. In this study, the magnetic levitation force, guidance force and magnetic stiffness values were determined for single and multi-seeded YBCOs on different PMGs in ZFC regime and different cooling heights (CHs) after the magnetic flux distributions simulation of the using PMGs. Implemented study showed that the additional downward PMs make an enhancing contribution on the magnetic levitation force, guidance force and magnetic stiffness of both single and multi-seeded YBCOs. It was also determined that both the force and stiffness ratios of multi-seeded YBCO to single-seeded YBCO increase with increasing CH, indicating that the multi-seeded YBCO has much more interaction domain than single-seeded at higher gaps. It is considered that the results obtained in this study are very useful in technological applications of Maglev and bearing systems, because there is no detailed study on the magnetic stiffness, levitation and guidance force comparison to clarify electromagnetic behavior of single and multi-seeded YBCOs for different HTS-PMG arrangements.

The development of superconductor Maglev systems depends on various disciplinary studies due to the inherent composition of available technologies. Because the fabrication cost is very effective on the Maglev, the requirement of the efficiency improvement focuses the researchers on the design considerations. In this study, the guidance force, the magnetic levitation force (MLF) and magnetic stiffness of different permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements were investigated in different cooling heights (CH) to enhance the efficiency of Maglev system. The single domain cylindrical bulk YBCO superconductors fabricated by top seeding method with the diameter of 45 mm and the height of 15 mm were used as HTS. Magnetic field distributions of the PMGs were calculated by finite element method to determine optimum HTS-PMG arrangements. We have used auxiliary onboard permanent magnets with YBCOs to improve the MLF of three pole Halbach PMG arrangements. It is seen that the efficiency of Maglev systems can be improved by using suitable HTS-PMG arrangements. In this study cost efficiency of the integrated levitation and guidance force ((Fz)max(Fx)max/(SPMG ∗ Cost)) was also determined. It is inferred from this study that the cooling height and PMG-HTS arrangement are key parameters for guidance force, levitation force, magnetic stiffness and efficiency of Maglev systems. It is believed that this study will supply useful references for practical application of HTS Maglev systems.
