Introduction: Different regenerative materials are used to protect and stimulate pulp tissue. Objectives: This in vitro study aimed to examine the cytotoxicity of different doses of boron-containing nano-hydroxyapatite (B-nHAp) and its antibacterial effect. Material and methods: B-nHAp was synthesized with microwave-assisted chemical precipitation method at different rates, such as 1%, 5%, and 10%. The extracts were prepared in separate tubes: 1%, 5%, 10% B-nHAp, and nHAp 50 mg/ml. Cytotoxicity test was performed on L929 mouse fibroblasts for 24 and 72 hours. Antibacterial analysis was performed with Streptococcus mutans bacteria using micro-dilution method. Cell viability values were evaluated with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test (p < 0.05). Results: B-nHAp was successfully synthesized in XRD and SEM analyses. Nano-hydroxyapatite showed more cell viability than control group at 24 and 72 hours. All B-nHAp extracts demonstrated less cell viability at the end of 24 hrs. than control group. However, 1% B-nHAp cell viability decreased more in the B-nHAp group compared with the control group, while 5% and 10% B-nHAp showed high cell viability after 72 hours of incubation. B-nHAp demonstrated less antibacterial effect on Streptococcus mutans compared with nHAp. Conclusions: According to the results, the addition of boron to nano-hydroxyapatite does not make a significant contribution to increase the regenerative and antibacterial properties of the material.

Graphene Additives Effect on Mechanical and Structural Characterization Properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and Boron Based Cement Mortar

Çaglar, Hakan; Çaglar, Arzu; Can, Omer

In this study, it was aimed to develop properties of cement paste having standard properties and produce a graphene doped Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and boron-based cement paste in this context. This type of special cement is mixed with PVA as polymer additive material so it can have a higher strength and sufficient elasticity per unit weight. Also, boric acid which can absorb neutrons having poisonous effect in nuclear reactions is added into the cement in order to minimize environmental disaster caused by a nuclear accident. Compressive and bending strengths were measured based on TSE tests of graphene doped PVA and boron-based cement paste. Then, samples were measured by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller Method (BET) and subjected to X-ray Diffraction (XRD). In XRD measurements, crystalline structure was observed in all materials. According to compressive strength tests, as the graphene amount increases compressive strength also increases, however in bending strength tests as the graphene amount increases bending strength decreases. Although the values of bending strength of samples produced decreased with increase of graphene content, these values were found to be above the standard values. In addition to boron, graphene admixture has a significant effect on material with its positive strength properties.

Investigation of high-temperature-resistant rhenium–boron neutron shields by experimental studies and Monte Carlo simulations

Korkut, Turgay; Korkut, Hatun; Aygün, Bünyamin; Bayram, Özkan; Karabulut, Abdulhalik

In this study, novel rhenium–boron neutron-shielding high-temperature-resistant materials were designed. The considered samples, Re60–B40, Re58–B42, Re50–B50, and Re40–B60, with different concentrations of rhenium and boron were investigated to elucidate their neutron-shielding performances, and compare them with well-known neutron-shielding materials such as the 316LN quality nuclear steel. In addition to the experimental studies, Monte Carlo simulations were performed using the FLUKA and GEANT4 codes, where 4.5-MeV neutrons emitted by a 241Am–Be source were employed. Experimental equivalent dose rates, simulated track lengths, energy balances, and neutron mass absorption cross sections were discussed in detail.

Improvement in performance properties of asphalt using a novel boron-containing additive

    Oruç, Şeref; Yılmaz, Bahadır

In current times, many additives are used to improve the performance characteristics of asphalt. In this study, a new additive that contains boron, given the short name of cyclic borate ester (CBE), was chemically synthesised in laboratory conditions. It was added to the asphalt binder as 1%, 2%, 4% and 6% ratios of asphalt by weight, and modified asphalt samples were produced. The effects of CBE on the conventional properties of asphalt binder (penetration, softening point, ductility, flash point, Fraass breaking point) were examined using a dynamic shear rheometer, rotational viscosity, a rolling thin film oven, a pressure aging vessel and bending beam rheometer test methods. Results showed that the use of CBE additive increased the hardness, softening point, viscosity, flash-point value and rutting resistance of asphalt binder and decreased temperature sensitivity. CBE also enhanced elastic responses (increased complex shear modulus and decreased phase angle), aging resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance and did not change the cohesion property.

Effect of boron-containing additives on rheological properties of asphalt binder

Oruç, Şeref; Yılmaz, Bahadır; Sancak, Kemal

In this study, four novel boron-containing additives were synthesised chemically in the laboratory. The modification was performed by adding the additives, respectively, into asphalt at a certain amount by weight at the same temperature and mixing conditions. The modification mechanism and microstructure of the blends were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy. The variation in modified samples in comparison to base asphalt was investigated by performing the penetration, softening point, dynamic shear rheometer, amplitude–frequency–temperature sweeps and rotational viscosity tests. It was observed that the additives increased the softening point, rutting resistance, elastic properties and viscosity of asphalt. The additive synthesised with triazole borate ester octanol-sulphuric acid catalysts gave the most enhancements, relative to base asphalt.
