Social Media Addiction and Cognitive Behavioral Physical Activity Among Adolescent Girls: A Cross-Sectional Study

Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Terzi, Handan; Şahin, Didem

Objective: To measure a multivariate analysis of social media addiction and cognitive-behavioral physical activity associated with several sociodemographic characteristics in adolescent girls. Design and Methods: A cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of adolescent girls studying in a vocational high-school in the Middle-Black-Sea region in Türkiye (n = 333). A questionnaire, Social Media Addiction Scale-for-Adolescents (SMAS-A), and Cognitive-Behavioral Physical Activity Questionnaire (CBPAQ) were used to collect the data. Results: The mean age was 15.35 (SD = 1.15), and 29.4% were the ninth-class students. Of the adolescent girls, 85.9% were social-media users, 59.8% used the internet 2-hours-or-more/daily, 67.9% declared themselves as moderately-active. The mean scores of the SMAS-A and the CBPAQ were 3.40 (SD = 1.61) and 21.03 (SD = 7.64), respectively. There was a significantly-negative correlation between cognitive-behavioral physical activity and social-media addiction levels. The One-Way MANOVA results showed significant differences in the academic level, family income, mother education, and physical activity measurement application usage affected to cognitive-behavioral physical activity. Social media usage habit affected to the social media addiction level. Conclusions: Daily internet usage time and self-declared physical activity level were the mutually affected factors. School nurses should act to improve healthy social media usage habits to promote well-being and encourage the positive attitudes towards regular physical activity in this population.

Sexual Developmental Characteristics of Intellectually Disabled Adolescents in Türkiye: A Cross-Sectional Analysis

Kirbaş, Zila Özlem; Aktaş, Elif Odabaşi

Purpose: This study aimed to examine the sexual development characteristics of adolescents with intellectual disability in terms of several variables. The data were collected with the Personal Information Form and the Sexual Development Characteristics Scale of Children with Adolescent Mental Disabilities. Method: Independent samples tests, one-way ANOVA tests, and Bonferroni post hoc analyses were conducted to compare the descriptive characteristics of the adolescents and parents with their scale scores. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to examine the relationships between the dependent and independent variables. Significant differences were identified between certain subdimensions of the scale and the variables. Findings: The sexual arousal subdimension of the scale accounts for 12% of the variance in the dependent variable, the knowledge about physical development subdimension accounts for 10% of the variance in the dependent variable, the sexual satisfaction subdimension accounts for 6% of the variance in the dependent variable, and the sexual self-care subdimension accounts for 11% of the variance in the dependent variable. This difference was explained by the independent variables (R2 adjusted= .12, .10, .06, .11, respectively). Conclusion: In this study, it was found that the sexual development characteristics of adolescents with intellectual disability were affected by the educational status of the mother, the place of residence of the family, the help of the spouse in childcare, the gender of the child, the verbal communication status of the child, the degree of inadequacy of the child, and the ability to meet the personal needs of the child.

The mediating role of time attitude in the relationship between self-esteem and resilience in high school students

Çelik, Eyüp; Süler, Melek; Söylemez, Aydın; Koçak, Lokman

The aim of this research was to investigate the mediating role of time attitudes in the relationship between self-esteem and resilience in high school students. High school students’ self-esteem, time attitude, and resilience have been researched comparatively. The research was carried out with a quantitative research design and survey method. Participants, who were selected using a convenience sampling method, were high school students. The 1,932 participants consisted of students in the following grade distribution: 793 ninth grade (248 male, 545 female); 365 tenth grade (78 male, 257 female); 350 eleventh grade (90 male, 260 female); and 434 twelfth grade (130 male, 324 female). Participants were selected from secondary education institutions in Sakarya and Kocaeli during COVID-19 from January to May 2021. Data were collected using tools such as the Two Factored Self-Esteem Scale, Adolescent Time Attitude Scale, and Ego Resilience Scale. The data was analyzed with correlation analysis and regression-based mediation analysis to investigate the relationship between self-esteem, time attitude and resilience. The SPSS 22 package program was used to analyze the data. After analyzing the data, it has been concluded that the time attitude in adolescents indeed has a mediating role in the relationship between self-esteem and resilience. The results of the research will make important contributions to the related literature.

Investigation of the effect of group counselling based on schema therapy on academic expectation stress in high school students

    Koçak, Lokman; Çelik, Eyüp

This research is a preliminary evaluation study to determine whether group counselling based on schema therapy has an effect on academic expectation stress in high school students. In this study, a 2 × 3 split-plot design was used. The Academic Expectation Stress Inventory was applied for data collection purposes. The effect of group counselling based on schema therapy on academic expectation stress was tested using a two-factor ANOVA for mixed measurements. As a result of the analysis, the intervention*time effect was found to be significant with regard to academic expectation stress. The findings obtained in the study reveal that group counselling based on schema therapy creates a significant decrease in adolescents' academic expectation stress level, and this decline continues, as shown in the follow-up test. As a result, it can be said that the group counselling programme based on schema therapy, which was developed as a preliminary evaluation study, has the potential to reduce the academic expectation stress level of high school students.
