A review and classification of conventional, advanced, smart and multifunctional glazing technologies for low-carbon building applications

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Guclu, Tamer; Cuce, Erdem

In this study, various smart window technologies are introduced, examined in terms of energy efficiency, and their advantages over existing conventional windows are presented. Smart window technologies used today are more energy efficient than traditional single and double-glazing windows. It is possible to achieve up to 80% energy savings in building heating/cooling costs compared to traditional window technologies, with a correctly selected and applied smart window technology depending on various external factors such as building facade, climatic conditions and window area. Therefore, smart windows technologies play a leading role in the realisation of nearly/zero energy building goals.

Performing trajectory tracking control of an unmanned ground vehicle using fractional order terminal sliding mode controller

    Sekban, Hayriye Tuǧba; Başçi, Abdullah

In this paper, fractional order terminal sliding mode control (FOTSMC) method is used for trajectory tracking control performance of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). Firstly, a kinematic controller is designed to estimate the linear and angular velocities of the vehicle. Then, a FOTSMC design is carried out to track the vehicle reference velocities. Terminal sliding mode control (TSMC) and sliding mode control (SMC) methods are also used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller. The simulation results show that the proposed controller improves the tracking error by about 13% over SMC and 6.146% compared to TSMC.

The determinants of non-family employees' turnover intentions in family firms

Yazici, Omer; Memili, Esra; Patel, Pankaj C.; Ramadani, Veland

While research on the organisational behaviour and HRM (i.e., organisational identification, justice, commitment, and turnover intentions) in family business contexts has been advancing, the empirical investigation of non-family employees’ perceptions is still scarce. Drawing upon family business-influenced literature and organisational identification, justice, and commitment theories, we explore the determinants of non-family employees’ turnover intentions. Specifically, we examine the impact of non-family employees’ family firm identification and perceived justice on family firm commitment, in turn affecting turnover intentions. Furthermore, we examine the moderation effects of perceived family influence on these links. Our findings demonstrate that non-family employees’ family firm identification and perceived justice positively affect their family firm commitment, which in turn lowers turnover intentions. While family firm commitment mediates the relationship between family firm identification and turnover intentions, perceived family influence moderates the mediation effects of family firm commitment between family firm identification and turnover intentions. 2023 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Analysing the potential of transport triggered architecture for lattice-based cryptography algorithms

    Akçay, Latif; Yalçın, Berna Örs

Lattice-based structures offer numerous possibilities for post-quantum cryptography. Recently, many post-quantum cryptography algorithms have been built on hard lattice problems. The three of the remaining four algorithms in the final round of the NIST Standardization Process rely on lattice-based methods. However, suitable processor architectures for these algorithms have not been sufficiently investigated. This study examines the potential advantages of transport triggered architecture for these algorithms. We compare popular 64-bit RISC-V processors with our conceptual transport triggered architecture processor over reference software implementations. Our processor provides better results than RISC-V competitors, regardless of the algorithm. It seems to be up to 3× faster, 1.6×–2× smaller, and consumes 1.3×–3.6× less energy than the compared RISC-V cores. Thus, an alternative base architecture is proposed for post-quantum cryptography processor development for embedded systems. The most critical shortcoming of the proposed architecture is the lack of compatible intellectual property core support for system-on-chip designs. We share comparative analyses with test results for different core configurations.

Designing learner control in instructional software: a lens of 'time spent on tasks' to determine the mental effort

Çakiroǧlu, Ünal; Aksoy, Dilara Arzugül; Gencan, Ayşegül; Şen, Hasan

This study aims to determine the relationships between mental effort and the use of learner controls while working with instructional software. Various versions of instructional software including control components were developed to examine this relationship. Twenty-four secondary school students participated in the study and studied with instructional software including different controls in the content pages. All content pages consisted of the content area, image area, and control panel components. Five different page templates including different positions of these components were placed on the pages. Quantitative data were gathered from the cognitive load scale and the time spent on tasks was used for measuring the mental effort spent on the tasks in the software. The results indicated that students who used more controls spent more mental effort. Along with the study findings, the factors affecting the perceptions of cognitive load regarding the time spent on the controls were discussed. Implications were suggested for designers within the cognitive effects of learner control.

A study on optical, morphological and mechanical properties of Al2O3 ultra-thin films deposited by RF reactive magnetron sputtering

Pat, Suat; Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan; Aydoʇmuş, Tuna; Elmas, Saliha; Korkmaz, Şadan; Ekem, Naci; Balbaʇ, M. Zafer

The Al2O3 ultra-thin films with the thicknesses of 30 nm and 35 nm were deposited on glass microscope slides by a radio frequency reactive magnetron sputtering system. The optical, morphological and mechanical properties were investigated as function of the film thickness. The refractive index of the resulting Al2O3 ultra-thin film increased with the increasing thickness. Both the films showed high transparency of > 85% and low reflectivity of < 10% in the visible and near infrared region. A band gap of ∼8.65 eV was obtained for the 30 nm film and ∼7.53 eV for the 35 nm film from an empirical relation between refractive index and band gap. According to the results obtained from the AFM studies, the root mean square surface roughness of the films are 3.67 nm and 3.77 nm for the 30 nm and 35 nm film, respectively. The hardness and Young modulus values decreased with the increasing film thickness.

Fuzzy weighted association rule based solution approaches to facility layout problem in cellular manufacturing system

    Altuntas, S.; Dereli, T.; Selim, H.

This study aims to propose new solution approaches based on fuzzy weighted association rules for facility layout problem in a cellular manufacturing system. The facility layout problem under concern has two important aspects, namely; fuzzy product route and fuzzy machine weight. Number of machine types as well as the number of machines in each type is determined in order to define a fuzzy product route. A fuzzy set is then assigned for each machine type to match them with appropriate products. Alternative routes for each product and machine weights are defined by fuzzy functions. Market demand is also used to assign weights to the machines. Three solution approaches, namely fuzzy weighted association rule mining (FWARM), Gyenesei's weighted quantitative association rules (WQAR) and normalised weighted association rule mining (NWARM) based approaches, are proposed in this study. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first attempt which considers fuzzy weighted association rule-based data mining approaches to the facility layout problem. An illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed approaches.
