Özkan, Meral; Güneş, Hüseyin
Introduction: To determine what natural and herbal remedies were used in the fight against COVID-19 and analyze the potential of these products to create a risk for surgical patients. Methods: The study was conducted with a descriptive and cross-sectional research design. The data were collected between September and October 2021. In the study, convenience sampling, which is a non-probability sampling method, was used. An online questionnaire was applied to the participants on social media platforms. In the data collection process, 1 488 individuals were reached. Results: The most frequently used herbal remedies by the participants were garlic (62.8%), ginger (53.4%), linden (42.3%), turmeric (37.9%), and oregano (35.6%). The most frequently used natural remedies were lemon (65.4%), honey (53.8%), yogurt (47.2%), traditional soups (33.5%), and vinegar (33.1%). The most frequently used supplements of vitamins were vitamin D (42.4%) vitamin C (41.1%), vitamin B12 (22.4%), vitamin E (8.7%), and fish oil/Omega-3 fatty acids (7.5%). Among the participants who reported that they used natural and herbal remedies (n = 710), only 6.9% were determined to have undergone a surgery in this period. Furthermore, 89.8% of these individuals who presented to the hospital for a surgery had not been asked whether they used natural or herbal remedies by healthcare professionals. Conclusion: The intake of garlic and vitamin E supplements according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the intake of garlic, ginger, turmeric/curcumin, and vitamin E supplements according to the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement Consensus Statement should be stopped before a surgery.

Özen, Soner; Şenay, Volkan
In this research, two transparent chromium oxide thin films having different thickness values were simultaneously deposited on glass substrates by adjusting target-substrate distance by means of radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering technique. The effect of film thickness on optical, morphological and nano-mechanical properties of the produced thin films were analyzed by using UV-VIS spectrophotometer, interferometer, tensiometer and atomic force microscope. The transmittance and absorbance of the films were measured in the incident photon wavelength range of 300–1000 nm. The optical energy band gap value of the produced thin films was estimated to be approximately 4 eV from the obtained absorbance data via Tauc's method. According to the results obtained from nano-mechanical tests, the produced thin films were highly scratch resistant. From the wetting experiments, it was found that the surfaces of the films were hydrophilic.

Şenay, Volkan; Özen, Soner; Aydoğmuş, Tuna
ZnN is a relatively new material and its physical properties are not yet well studied. In this research, ZnN thin films having different thickness values were deposited on glass substrates by means of radio frequency (RF) reactive magnetron sputtering technique at room temperature and some physical properties of ZnN thin films were investigated by several techniques. UV–vis spectrophotometer and reflectometer were employed to investigate the optical properties of the produced thin films. The surface properties were investigated by using tensiometer and atomic force microscope (AFM). The effects of film thickness on the optical and surface properties of ZnN thin films were discussed. The refractive index and band gap values were found to be dependent on thickness of ZnN thin films. The AFM investigations indicated that the surfaces of the films are compact and smooth. From the wetting experiments, it was found that the surfaces of the films are hydrophobic and surface free energy values are low as reported in literature.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2016Scopus SJRQ2Optical, morphological and mechanical properties of an Al-Al2O3 nanocomposite thin film grown by thermionic vacuum arc
Şenay, Volkan; Özen, Soner; Pat, Suat; Korkmaz, Şadan
An Al-Al2O3 nanocomposite thin film was deposited onto a glass substrate in high vacuum condition using Al2O3 pellets as source material by means of the thermionic vacuum arc technique in just 50 s. UV-visible spectrophotometer, optical reflectometer, spectroscopic ellipsometer, XRD, FESEM and AFM were employed to investigate the optical, structural morphological and mechanical properties of the produced film. The film exhibited a high transmittance (above 80%) in the 400-1000 nm region. The dispersion of the refractive index was discussed in terms of the single oscillator model. The optical band gap value derived from the Wemple-DiDomenico dispersion relationship was 5.7 eV. It was observed that the results of the optical investigations agreed well with Al2O3 thin films. XRD characterization showed that the film contained Al and Al2O3 phases. The FESEM analysis revealed that the film morphology had a dense characteristic. 2D and 3D AFM micrographs indicated a smooth surface with a low value of average roughness. When compared to the mechanical properties of Al2O3 thin films, it was observed that the hardness and Young's modulus reduced due to presence of ductile Al particles.
