The Online Learning Experience of Theology Students in Turkey during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A New Disposition for RE?

Selçuk, Mualla; Sözen, Hasan; Şimşek, Vahdeddin; İpek, Yasemin

Through a quantitative research model, this study aims to understand the general attitudes of theology students in Turkey regarding online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. In examining the determinant factors on their attitudes, research findings include: previous online education experience, the frequency of participating in synchronous courses, the qualifications of the instructor, the assessment and evaluation procedures, the orientation training programs and the infrastructure opportunities of the universities. Interpreting these factors enables the authors of this article to suggest a conversational relationship between RE and Islamic sciences with some shared objectives that leads to naming guiding principles in a manner that significantly supports students’ vocational journey.

Synthesis of silver nanoparticles prepared with a dextran-type exopolysaccharide from Weissella cibaria MED17 with antimicrobial functions

İspirli, Hümeyra; Sagdic, Osman; Dertli, Enes

Microbial polysaccharides can find distinct applications as stabilizer agents including synthesis of nanoparticles. In this study, a dextran-type exopolysaccharide (EPS) was used as the stabilizer agent for the green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-Dex) with antimicrobial characteristics. UV–vis spectroscopy analysis was used to test the formation of AgNPs-Dex. The uniform morphology at around 10 nm size was observed for AgNPs-Dex by TEM analysis and importantly EDX analysis demonstrated the embedment of Ag+ ions within dextran as the stabilizer agent. XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of AgNPs-Dex and FTIR analysis demonstrated the interactions of dextran functional groups with silver. DSC and TGA analysis showed the alteration in the thermal stability of AgNPs-Dex compared to the stabilizer dextran. The antibacterial and antifungal activities of AgNPs-Dex were determined against food originated pathogenic bacteria and fungi and important inhibition levels were observed at 1 mg ml−1 concentration of AgNPs-Dex and this activity was observed to be concentration dependent.

Asymmetric reduction of prochiral aromatic and hetero aromatic ketones using whole-cell of Lactobacillus senmaizukei biocatalyst

Çolak, Nida Sezin; Kalay, Erbay; Şahin, Engin

Asymmetric bioreduction of aromatic and heteroaromatic ketones is an important process in the production of precursors of biologically active molecules. In this study, the bioreduction of aromatic and hetero aromatic prochiral ketones into optically active alcohols was investigated using Lactobacillus senmaizukei as a whole-cell catalyst, since whole-cells are less expensive than pure enzymes. The study indicates enantioselective bioreduction of various substituted aromatic ketones (1–16) to the corresponding (R)-and (S)-chiral secondary alcohols (1a–16a) in low to excellent enantioselectivity (6–94%) with good yields (58–95%). In addition, heteroaromatic prochiral ketones 1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethanone (17) and 1-(furan-2-yl)ethanone (18) were reduced to (R)-17a and (R)-18a in enantiopure form with excellent conversion (>99%) and yields. These findings show that L. senmaizukei is a very important biocatalyst for asymmetric reduction of both 6-membered and 5-member heteroaromatic methyl ketones. This method promising a green synthesis for the synthesis of biologically important secondary chiral alcohols in an environmentally friendly and inexpensive process.

A novel approach to finding optimum operating conditions of design factors for the grinding experiment

Uçurum, Metin; Özdemir, Akın; Teke, Çağatay; Tekin, İlker

The efficiency of grinding experiments is an important issue for many industries. In this paper, a central composite design-based methodology was proposed to investigate the four design factors that affect the particle sizes. The four design factors were specified as mill speed (% of Nc), ball filling ratio (fc), powder filling ratio (jb) and grinding time (min). Another important issue was how to obtain an optimum operating condition for four design factors. For this particular purpose, a novel dual response optimization model was proposed using the particle sizes (d 10, d 50, and d 90) and the span value concept. This proposed approach was compared to the desirability function-based optimization concept. The verification study of the experiment was also carried out. The results of the grinding experiment runs showed that the optimum operating conditions were mill speed 73.495% of Nc, ball filling ratio 0.354, powder filling ratio 0.157, and grinding time 70 min. In addition, d 10, d 50, and d 90 were found 3.31 µm, 12µm, and 45.6 µm, respectively. The span value was also found at 3.52.

Synthesis of alternan-stabilized zinc nanoparticles: morphological, thermal, antioxidant and antimicrobial characterization

Yücel, Nur; İspirli, Hümeyra; Mercan, Emin; Erdoğan, Ümmügülsüm; Dertli, Enes

This study aimed to synthesize zinc nanoparticles with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities using alternan (ZnNPs-Alt) produced by Lactobacillus reuteri E81 as the stabilizing agent. For the characterization of the ZnNPs-Alt, UV–vis spectroscopy, SEM, TEM and EDX analysis, XRD, FTIR and DSC analysis were applied. The functional role of ZnNPs-Alt was tested by determination of their antioxidant activities by DPPH and CUPRAC methodologies and their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Results of this study demonstrated that alternan was utilized as a successful stabilizer to produce crystalline, thermally stabile ZnNPs-Alt with a particle size of ∼ 100 nm. Importantly, strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities were observed for ZnNPs-Alt in a concentration dependent manner. These findings confirmed the role of alternan as a stabilizing agent for the production of ZnNPs-Alt with functional roles.

Effects of Root Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria Inoculations on the Growth and Nutrient Content of Grapevine

Erdogan, Ummugulsum; Turan, Metin; Ates, Fadime; Kotan, Recep; Çakmakçi, Ramazan; Erdogan, Yasar; Kitir, Nurgül; Tüfenkçi, Sefik

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of seven nitrogen (N2)-fixing and/or phosphorus (P)-solubilizing and siderophore-producing microorganism based bio-fertilizers in single and triple strain combinations isolated from the acidic rhizospheric soil of native tea, grapevine, and wild red raspberries. As a result of this study, bacterial efficiency was found to be variable and depended on the bacterial strains and evaluated growth parameters. Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) has improved macro- and micro-nutrient concentrations in grapevine leaves, and stimulated plant growth. Triple inoculation and single inoculation based bio fertilizers were found to stimulate overall plant growth, including shoot and leaf weight, main shoot length, leaf ground index, chlorophyll, nitrogen, zinc and iron content of grapevine cv ‘Italy’. Bio-fertilizers increased the nutrients such as nitrogen, zinc and iron concentrations and consequently increased the chlorophyll content of the leaves.
