Exploratory Proteomic Analysis of Rhododendron ponticum Bee Pollen Based on High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

    Ecem Bayram, Nesrin; Celik, Saffet

Bee pollen is a bee product that is widely preferred by people for its nutritional properties as well as its health-protective properties, and is defined as a ‘superfood’. In this preliminary exploratory study, monofloral Rhododendron ponticum bee pollen was analyzed using a label-free LC-QTOF-MS proteomic approach. According to the results obtained, a total of 37 proteins from the rhododendron plant have been fully confirmed in the pollen sample. Normalized spectrum counting values (NSAF) providing information about the semi-quantitative amount of these proteins were determined to be between 120.84 and 43259.22. Based on these findings, it can be said that the proteomic approach can provide biomarkers for monitoring the botanical source and quality of monofloral bee pollen. However, since no biological or technical replicate study was conducted, the findings obtained are exploratory in nature and should be considered semi-quantitative. To our knowledge, this study is the first to report the protein profile of R. ponticum bee pollen using a proteomic approach.

Determination of some surface properties in wax coatings applied on mulberry (Morus alba) wood

    Ayata, Ümit

In this study, the surface properties of mulberry (Morus alba) wood treated with wax layers of varying coat numbers were identified and compared. The obtained data were analyzed in a statistical program, revealing generally different results. Except for the h° value, the number of coats factor was found to be significant for all tests in the variance analyses. As the number of coats increased, decreases were observed in the L* value, while increases were found in the b*, C*, and a* values. Increases in the number of coats resulted in a reduction in WI* values in both directions. The highest results in color parameters were observed in the control samples for ho and L* values, whereas for a*, b*, and C* values, they were found in the experimental samples treated with three coats of wax. The ∆E* values measured were 7.65 for one coat, 9.68 for two coats, and 12.02 for three coats of application. Increases in glossiness values were achieved in both directions at 60 and 85 degrees. The application of wax has been found to change certain optical properties of the wood.

Comparison of Honey's Physicochemical, Bioactive Components, and Biological Activities from the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye

Ertürk, Ömer; Çil, Elif; Can, Zehra; Demir, Demet; Bagdatli, Emine

The aim of this study is to determine and compare the physicochemical and biological characterization of some honey samples in the Eastern Black Sea Region of Türkiye. Physicochemical tests investigated the compliance of honey samples with the Turkish Food Codex. The phenolic components were analyzed by RP- HPLC-PDA. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents (TPC, TFC), antioxidant capacity (FRAP, DPPH), urease, glucose-oxidase, and antimicrobial activity (Disc diffusion, MIC) of the samples were determined, and FTIR and UV-Vis analyses were conducted. The spectra of the honey samples revealed the characteristic bands corresponding to the functional groups of minor components. As a result of the physicochemical analyses, it was determined that some of the samples examined did not comply with the standard values defined in the Turkish Food Codex in terms of the examined parameters. Spectral findings show that honey samples have a rich chemical composition. Anzer honey is preferable to other kinds with its rich phenolic and antioxidant content and relatively high antimicrobial activity.

Work Accidents, Occupational Diseases, and Lost Workdays in Türkiye's Forestry Sector: Increasing Risks and Improvement Proposals for the 2019-2023 Period

    Ozdemir, Mustafa

In this study, data regarding occupational accidents and diseases, as well as workday losses in the forestry sector in Turkey between 2019 and 2023, have been thoroughly analysed using official statistical annual reports from the Social Security Institution. In 2019, there were 27,025 employees in the sector, which increased by 31.42% to 35,517 by 2023. Alongside the rise in the number of employees, occupational accidents in the sector have also increased year by year, peaking in 2022 with 860 accidents, 14 of which resulted in fatalities. Over the five-year period, only one case of occupational disease was reported, indicating significant deficiencies in the identification and reporting of health risks within the sector. The increase in the number of lost workdays due to occupational accidents and diseases reached 11,125 in 2022, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, adversely affecting productivity in the sector. Consequently, this study suggests that the forestry sector in Turkey needs to enhance its preparedness for emergencies and develop comprehensive occupational health and safety policies along with crisis management practices.
