Optimization and Mechanical Performance of Alkali-Activated Bottom Ash and Polypropylene Fiber in Deep Mixing Columns

Yilmaz, Fatih; Kamiloğlu, Hakan Alper; Avlayan, Büşra

Deep mixing columns (DMC) are one of the widely used soil improvement methods in cohesive and cohesionless soils. Cement and lime are predominantly used as conventional binders in DMC grout. Due to high CO2 emissions from conventional binders, the feasibility of using alkali-activated binders as DMC grout is being investigated. This study was conducted in three main stages. In the first stage, the proportions of bottom ash and activator (mixture of 10M NaOH and Na2SiO3) were optimized to achieve the highest UCS value using response surface methodology (RSM). In the second stage, the influence of polypropylene fiber content was examined in detail by incorporating varying amounts of fibers into the optimized binder-activator mixture to determine the optimal fiber content. Since DMC are fully buried, they are cured in the soil media. In this case, the soil temperature, which varies along the depth of the soil, also becomes the curing temperature of the DCM. Due to climate, soil condition and thermodynamic based parameters, curing temperature of the DMC varies throughout the soil depth. Therefore, in the third stage, the effect of curing temperature on the mechanical properties of the stabilized samples was evaluated under different temperatures. Results of the study revealed optimal UCS values with AAB content of 0.3-0.5 and activator content of 0.45-0.5. Polypropylene fiber reinforcement further improved strength, reaching an optimum at 1.50-1.75% content. Curing temperature played a significant role, with UCS and modulus of elasticity increasing up to 30 °C, indicating the importance of considering environmental factors in DMC design. These findings suggest that the optimized mixture has the potential to replace conventional cement-based binders in DMCs, offering a more sustainable solution with lower carbon emissions. Furthermore, the observed influence of curing temperature highlights the need to account for subsurface thermal variations when designing DMCs, as these factors significantly affect strength gain and long-term performance.

A mini report on palynological and antibacterial tests of four propolis samples from different regional origins

Bayram, Sinan; Kaci, Fatma Necmiye; Ecem Bayram, Nesrin; Gormez, Arzu

In this study, palynological and antibacterial tests of propolis samples from Iran-Turan (IP1 and IP2),Mediterranean (MP), and Europe-Siberia (EP) phytogeographical regions were performed. The pollens ofApiaceae, Asteraceae, Betulaceae, Boraginaceae, Brassicaceae, Campanulaceae, Caryophyllaceae,Fabaceae, Fagacee, Lamiaceae, Poaceae, Pinaceae, Ranunculaceae, Rosaceae, Salicaceae andScrophulariaceae taxa were found in the palynological analysis. Gram negative and Gram positivebacteria were used to determine in vitro antibacterial activities of the propolis samples. The most potentinhibitory effect against the target microorganisms was obtained from IP1. The most resistant strains wereBurkholderia cepacia, Citrobacter freundii and Streptococcus pneumoniae for all the propolis samples. But, the antibacterial activity levels of the samples were different from each other. These results indicatethat propolis can be assessed in different areas such as cosmetic, medicine and food as an antimicrobialagent.

Taylor-Matrix Collocation Method to Solution of Differential Equations Characterizing Spherical Curves in Euclidean 4-Space

    Aydın, Tuba Ağırman; Sezer, Mehmet

In this study we consider a third order linear differential equation with variable coefficients characterizingspherical curves according to Frenet frame in Euclidean 4-Space E 4 . This equation whose coefficients arerelated to special function, curvature and torsion, is satisfied by the position vector of any regular unitvelocity spherical curve. These type equations are generally impossible to solve analytically and so, forapproximate solution we present a numerical method based on Taylor polynomials and collocations pointsby using initial conditions. Our method reduces the solution of problem to the solution of a system ofalgebraic equations and the approximate solution is obtained in terms of Taylor polynomials.

The In-vitro Effect of Lisonopril on Serum Alkaline Phosphatase and Acid Phosphatase Enzymes Activity

Demir, Yaşar; Çelik, Safinur Yıldırım; Demir, Nazan

Hypertension is a disease that most elderly people suffer. People with high blood pressure often obliged to use the drug that lowers blood pressure in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives. In this study, the in vitro effect of lisonopril on serum alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase enzymes which are essential for normal bone formation and mineralization activities was investigated. Alkaline phosphatase enzyme was purified using DEAE-cellulose, acid phosphatase enzyme was purified using CM-cellulose ion exchange chromatography from human serum. The activities of alkaline and acid phosphatase were determined using pnitrophenylphosphate as the substrate. When finding out the activity of TrACP enzyme, adding tartrate to the environment provided inhibition of other acid phosphatase enzymes than TrACP. The activities of alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase, which is resistant to tartrate, have been found at five different concentrations of substrates (0.033, 0.1, 0.16, 0.23 and 0.3 mm) in environment with inhibitor and without inhibitor. While three different concentrations of the inhibitor, including 10-2,10-3 and 10-4, was used for each substrate concentration. It was found that the drug inhibit both enzymes, and I50 value was calculated as 0.17 mm and 0.79 mm. Furthermore, Ki values were calculated as 6.98x10-4, 7.06x10-4 for ALP and TrACP respectively by utilizing the Lineweaver-Burk plot
