High-speed treatment of low strength domestic wastewater for irrigation water production in pilot-scale classical, moving bed and fixed bed hybrid MBRs

Tuluk, Banu; Yildiz, Ergun; Nuhoglu, Alper; Tataroglu, Numan Suadi; Gulluce, Ekrem; Cengiz, Ibrahim; Degermenci, Nejdet; Angin, Ilker

To evaluate the treatability of domestic wastewater under conditions of low hydraulic retention time and high organic loadings, 3 pilot-scale automatically controlled membrane bioreactors (MBRs) as classical (C-MBR), moving bed (MB-MBR), and fixed bed (FB-MBR) were established and operated for a total of 268 days. Established pilot plants were compared in terms of treatment performance, membrane fouling, irrigation water criteria, and power consumption values. Results obtained have shown that all three systems were able to achieve more than 93% removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in an average hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 hour, and MB-MBR and FB-MBR were superior in terms of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removals. It has been determined that MB-MBR and FB-MBR are also advantageous in terms of power consumption. Especially it has been found that FB-MBR can produce better quality irrigation water with 40% lower power consumption than C-MBR under the same conditions. It was concluded that biofilm-supported hybrid systems could be a practical application in the fight against increasing water scarcity and global warming, both in obtaining clean water with less power consumption and in protecting human and environmental health.

A regional supplementary cementitious material for the cement industry: Pistachio shell ash

    Tekin, İ.; Dirikolu, İ.; Gökçe, H.S.

The recycling of agricultural wastes in cementitious products has recently been a trendy approach for the sustainability goals of the world as it ensures economic and ecological advantages in addition to the safe disposal of these wastes. In this regard, the potentiality of a biomass ash obtained from the incineration of pistachio shell to serve as a supplementary cementitious material is documented in the present study. An increase of up to 30% in the amount of pistachio shell ash resulted in the proportional increase of both water requirement and setting time of the ordinary Portland cement by up to 54% and 300%, respectively. The incorporation of up to 20% pistachio shell ash into the cement yielded specimens of comparable or higher compressive strength values relatively varying between 98% and 117% at the 28 days and later curing ages. Beside the cementitious property, it was observed that a presence of graphitic structures in the pistachio shell ash remarkably improved the mechanical and the microstructural properties of cement mortars. In conclusion, at least 10% incorporation of this ash into the cement is highly recommended for the cement industry as it is beneficial in achieving the highest ultimate (400-day) compressive strength and promotes no loss on the early (2-day) compressive strength.

Municipal solid waste-based district heating and electricity production: A case study

Tozlu, Alperen; Abusoglu, Aysegul; Ozahi, Emrah; Anvari-Moghaddam, Amjad

In this paper, municipal solid waste (MSW) based electricity production and district heating (DH) potential of Turkey are considered. Three MSW based waste-to-energy (WtE) scenarios is developed: (i) Scenario-I, a DH system integrated into a gas turbine power plant (GTPP), (ii) Scenario-II, a DH system integrated into an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), and (iii) Scenario-III, which is based solely on a DH system. As a result of the thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyzes of these developed scenarios using an existing MSW-based cogeneration facility's actual operating data, the system with the most extended payback period (about 5 years) is found as the GTPP-DH system developed in Scenario-I, which also has the highest investment cost. On the other hand, the system with the shortest payback period (about 2 years) is found as the DH system developed in Scenario-III, which also has the lowest investment cost. Overall exergy efficiencies of the GTTP-DH, ORC-DH, and DH systems are found to be 41.86%, 16.15%, and 31.87%, respectively. When the developed WtE scenarios adapted to the pilot provinces selected from each geographical region of Turkey, it is found that the GTPP system developed in Scenario-I can increase the power generation capacity of MSW plants for each province by about 20%.

Physical and mechanical properties of cement containing regional hazelnut shell ash wastes

    Baran, Y.; Gökçe, H. S.; Durmaz, M.

Turkey is ranked in the first place with two-thirds of the world hazelnut production. As the amount of shell obtained from shelled-hazelnut is almost equal to that of hazelnut by weight, the shell is a regionally important waste. The biomass is consumed as a fuel in some homes, workplaces, and public buildings with the help of specific caldrons. In the study, the use of ash was researched in the production of blended cement. For this purpose, blended cement mixtures containing hazelnut shell ash at the ratios of 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% by weight of CEM I 42.5R ordinary Portland cement were prepared. The binary cementitious systems were assessed in terms of chemical, physical and mechanical properties. Hazelnut shell ash introduction increased the water demand up to 59% for standard consistency and reduced setting time up to 96% according to the ordinary Portland cement. Compressive strength results were remarkably reduced by an increase in the amount of ash. With over 5% of hazelnut shell ash introduction, the 28-d compressive strength value was found unsatisfactory (<42.5 MPa). The insufficient total amount of SiO2+Fe2O3+Al2O3 reduced the usage amount of the biomass ash in cementitious products due to having no pozzolanic characteristic. Hazelnut shell ash can be used as an alkaline set accelerator in concrete products as it is not steel-reinforced due to its high chlorine ion content. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

High temperature resistance of boron active belite cement mortars containing fly ash

    Gökçe, H.Süleyman

Boron allowing stability of reactive belite phase in clinker production enhances neutron shielding capability of cement. In the study, neutron attenuation factor of boron active belite cements at various fly ash introduction was theoretically revealed by comparing with an alternative low heat cement (portland composite cement). High temperature resistance of the cements with and without fly ash introduction was determined on standard mortar prisms at elevated temperatures up to 900 °C with regard to compressive strength and flexural strength. Neutron shielding performance of boron active belite cement was found almost 25 times higher than Portland composite cement. Fly ash introduction significantly reduced the neutron attenuation factor of boron active belite cement. High temperature resistance of boron active belite cement mortar was found lower than that of Portland composite cement mortar at 700 °C at later curing time. 10% fly ash introduction improved the high temperature performance of boron active belite cement mortar exposed to 900 °C. Residual compressive strength values of the mortars containing fly ash were between 16% and 28% after exposing 900 °C.
