MORTUARY CULT AND KÖR CEMETERY IN TURKISH CULTURE

    Kabak, Turgay; Abali, Ismail

In Turkiye, the Yoruks, who have a nomadic lifestyle, migrate to a different region every season as part of their animal husbandry activities and bury their deceased relatives randomly anywhere during their migrations. This study focuses on the rare and interesting burial traditions of the Yoruks, as well as these cemeteries, which are called blind. In the article, the locations of these cemeteries were determined by field research method, the oral culture of the local people concerning these cemeteries was recorded and examined in the light of the mortuary cult that the Turks brought from the pre-Islamic period. With this examination, it has been observed that the Turks believe that the souls of dead people do not disappear and that the soul's connection with this world is not interrupted, and that they created an ancestor cult around this belief.

EXAMINATION OF FOLK BELIEFS IN YOMRA DISTRICT ACCORDING TO FUNCTIONAL THEORY

    Kabak, Turgay

When looking at studies on folk beliefs in Turkey, we generally find two types of publications. The majority of research focus on revealing the origins of folk beliefs, I which identified through fieldwork, in old Turkish religion and mythology, and I establishing connections between the past and the present. The studies in the second group involve analyses of folk beliefs collected from one region of Turkey with those from other regions, or with folk beliefs from different regions of the Turkic world using a comparative method. There are scarcely any studies that address the functional dimension of folk beliefs and examine them from this perspective. The existing studies are quite narrow in scope. There is no study that extensively examines folk beliefs collected from a specific region according to the functional theory, as done in this study, which is one of the context-centered theories used by many researchers in the field of folklore. In this study, folk beliefs obtained through the field collection method from the district of Yomra, located in the Trabzon province of the Eastern Black Sea I region of Turkey, were analyzed according to functional theory. As a result of the I examination conducted, it has been found that the folk beliefs in the region have eleven functions which are: helping to protect public health, assisting public veterinary, protecting from evil spirits and beings, ensuring abundance and prosperity and protecting from famine, bringing good luck and averting bad luck, predicting and directing natural phenomena, transferring intangible cultural heritage, helping to make prophecy, establishing a connection with sacred, reconciling the old and the new, and securing social unity. Thus, the folk beliefs of a region have been examined for the first time with a holistic approach, from a functional perspective, and a model is developed that can be applied to other regions as well as folk beliefs will remain.

İmdat Sancar and Bayburt Sağdıç (Best man’s) Weddings as Cultural Heritage; [BİR KÜLTÜR TAŞIYICISI BİREY OLARAK İMDAT SANCAR VE BAYBURT SAĞDIÇ DÜĞÜNLERİ]

    Kabak, Turgay

Bayburt, geographically located on the historical Silk Road that connects the Eastern Black Sea region with the Northeastern Anatolia region, is one of the ancient cities in the region. Throughout history, due to its location on the trade route, this city has been continuously inhabited, and it possesses a rich and deep cultural heritage. This cultural heritage, although constantly evolving in today’s digital world with rapid advancements in transportation and communication, has been largely preserved and passed down to the present day. In this regard, one of the most special cities in our country, Bayburt, has greatly benefited from individuals who both understand and actively preserve its culture. One of these individuals is İmdat Sancar. İmdat Sancar is one of the rare individuals who fit UNESCO’s definition of “culture bearers” with his knowledge of traditional folk songs, the songs he has composed, his participation in folk music events, and the traditional “sağdıç düğünü” (best man’s wedding) ceremonies he organizes. His special quality lies not only in his knowledge of the culture but also in his ability to actively practice and pass it on to others. The subject of this study is the traditional “sağdıç düğünü” (best man’s wedding) ceremonies known by İmdat Sancar. These ceremonies are actually categorized as village performance plays, falling within the realm of theatrical performances. These plays were collected from İmdat Sancar himself using interview methods and were analyzed from the perspective of Functional Theory. Content analysis was also conducted. As a result of the examination, it was determined that these plays serve various functions within the community and encompass a wealth of traditional knowledge and practices that are integral to people’s daily lives.

Crafts and Craftmanship in Bayburt Province as an Example of the Problems Faced in Transmission of Intangible Cultural Heritage

    Kabak, Uyesi Turgay

Trading is one of the first planned and organized activities that mankind put forward after his life on earth started. Because human beings are not a being that can meet all their needs by themselves. They also need what other people produce in order to survive. People all over the world have developed different organizations in order to meet this need, which has led to the birth of trade, professions and money flow. The Ahiorder organization developed by the Turks in Anatolia and its surroundings and the craftsmen within this organization met all the goods and services needed by the Turkish people in the past with an intensive way of working. However, these crafts and the activities of the craftsmen performing these should not be considered merely as commercial activities. Because a very rich tangible and intangible cultural heritage has also been formed around these activities. The purpose of this study is to examine the situation of the five facing extinction among the handicrafts in Bayburt province, which are one of the first forms of production and have a production process intensive by hand. Document analysis and field research methods, which are among qualitative research methods, were used in this study. Observation and interview techniques were used in the field research. Then, the data obtained were examined in the light of the relevant literature and it was determined that even in the province of Bayburt, where traditional life continues to a certain extent compared to other big cities, crafts and craftsmen cannot compete with the industrial and commercial power of modern times and are about to disappear. The situation revealed by this result does not only mean the disappearance of some crafts. It is seen that a wide-ranging traditional knowledge of the craftsmen who carry out this craft, from learning the profession to its execution, from selling to the public to the professional law among tradesmen, has begun to disappear without being transmitted to future generations. The disappearance of professional knowledge, which is one of the important corners of the national culture and accepted by UNESCO in the intangible cultural heritage list within the framework of various conventions, also shows that we are facing with great problems in the transmission of our intangible cultural heritage to the future generations in our country in general and in Bayburt in particular. Today, the products that are the concrete output of the crafts are taken under protection by amateurs, museums and various institutions in our country, even if they are disconnected from their context; however, it is not enough to keep only materials in order to keep the cultural value of these crafts alive. The materials must be kept alive with the context of the production process. Only in this way can the cultural codes in the professional knowledge be transmitted to the future generations and brought to the world cultural heritage. The point of the study is that if it is late in the province of Bayburt, this intangible cultural heritage will become extinct together with the craftsmen who are the last representatives of their profession. In this regard, it was remarked that this process can be reversed with the projects in which the official institutions, the experts employed at the universities and the Turkish National Commission for UNESCO are partnered together in terms of cities.

A Folklore Study on Traditional Grape Molasses Production in Silifke Uzuncaburc

    Kabak, Turgay

Uzuncaburc, which is connected to the Silifke district of Mersin, is an old settlement that goes back to the previous periods of BCE. At the time when the Turks started to settle in Anatolia, the main sources of livelihood were agriculture and animal husbandry in Uzuncaburc, where nomadic Turkmen settled. Local people who feed animals such as goat and sheep have grown wheat, barley and chickpeas as agricultural products. However, these are not the only agricultural products grown by the people of the region. There is also a viticulture outside. There is a large amount of vineyards, especially in the center and around the settlement. In this context, there is almost no family in the region. The main reason why viticulture is so widespread is that Uzuncaburc has a deep-rooted culture of viticulture, whose origins go back to the previous periods of the Turks. The aim of this article is to determine the traditional molasses production methods in the region and to investigate the cultural dimension of this production. In this study, molasses production and ethnographic tools used during this production and oral culture products that were produced were determined and examined in terms of tradition by field research method. As a result of this study, it was determined that the people of Uzuncaburc continued the tradition of viticulture they took over from the previous inhabitants of the region.

Bamsı beyrek boyunun trabzon varyantı bası böyrek üzerine bir inceleme

    Kabak, Turgay

An ecocrıtıcal approach to the poems of dadaloğlu

    Kabak, Turgay

Although ecocritical theory, which poses a nature-based criticism on the literary texts not an anthropocentric criticism, has become popular after 1990s in Europe, it is a theory that has just been started to be known in Turkey. Ecocritical theory, which reacts to the capitalist system that considers that human and nature are separate from each other in terms of the fact that the human is an authorized-superior being that can exploit the nature however he likes and which argues that human and nature are integrated, suggests that human-nature relations are inevitably reflected in the literature works. Literary genres like novels, tales and poems in the New Turkish Literature have started to be analyzed recently in this field in our country. However, such analyses are scarcely any in the folk literature. In this study, the elements related to nature in the poems of Dadaloğlu, who is one of the milestones in the Turkish Minstrel tradition and who is the sonorous of Avşar Yörük Turkmens, and his perspective towards the nature are analyzed in a ecocritical way.
