Development and psychometric evaluation of the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) among Turkish nurses

Akeren, Zahide; Akeren, İhsan; Isik, Hafsa Kubra

Background: Self-regulation refers to individuals’ ability to control themselves, manage their behaviours and learn from their environment. Self-regulated learning skills may support nurses in providing effective care. This study aimed to develop and psychometrically evaluate the Self-Regulated Nursing Care Scale (SRNCS) for assessing nurses’ self-regulated nursing care skills based on Zimmerman’s Self-Regulated Learning Model (Z’SLM) and the relevant literature. Methods: The planning, implementation and evaluation components of nursing care were considered in relation to the forethought, performance and self-reflection phases of Z’SLM. Data were collected online between November 2022 and January 2023 from nurses working in state hospitals. Content validity was assessed through expert review. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed using data from 201 and 239 nurses, respectively. Criterion validity and reliability were also examined. Results: EFA yielded a 16-item, three-dimensional structure comprising planning, implementation, and evaluation and explaining 63.9% of the total variance. CFA supported this three-factor structure in an independent sample. Criterion validity was supported by correlations with the Counselling Skills in Nurses Scale. Cronbach’s alpha was 0.95 for the overall scale and 0.81, 0.87, and 0.93 for the planning, implementation, and evaluation dimensions, respectively. The test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.77. Conclusion: The findings support the validity and reliability of the Turkish form of the SRNCS for assessing self-regulated care skills among nurses providing inpatient care. The scale may be used in research and clinical settings to assess planning, implementation and evaluation dimensions of self-regulated nursing care. Future studies may examine relationships between SRNCS scores and care-related outcomes.

Kırbaş, Zila Özlem; Sönmez Sarı, Ebru; Aktaş, Elif Odabaşı; Işık, Hafsa Kübra

Purpose: The objective of the study was to determine COVID-19 fear and depression in pregnant women and new mothers. Methods: The study sample consisted of pregnant women and new mothers, who gave birth in the last 1 year, aged 18 years or older, living in a province in the Eastern Black Sea region (n = 259). Data werecollected through a personal-information form, COVID-19 Fear Scale, and PHQ-9. Results: Women's COVID-19 Fear Scalescore mean was 15.28±6.42 and their PHQ-9 mean score was 9.27±5.31. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the variables of PHQ-9 (p=0.000), educational background (p=0.029), occupational status (p=0.0015) and socioeconomic status (p=0.012) were statistically significant predictors of COVID-19 fear. All variables were found to explain the variance in COVID-19 Fear Scale scores to 16% (R2= 0.164). Conclusion: The women in this study appeared to have a moderate level of COVID-19 fear. PHQ-9, educational background, occupational status, and socioeconomic status were predictors of women's COVID-19 fear. The pandemic period, which is a public health emergency, affects not only the physical health but also the psychological health of pregnant and post-partum women, a particularly vulnerable group. It is very important for midwives and nurses to effectively screen pregnant and post-partum women, particularly vulnerable group, for symptoms of depression and fear, and to provide them with accurate and up-to-date information to protect and improve their health.

Özkan, Hava; Aktas, Elif Odabasi; Isik, Hafsa Kubra

ObjectiveThis study was conducted to determine the effect of the mode of delivery on maternal postpartum comfort level and breastfeeding self-efficacy.MethodsThe study was conducted as a systematic review and a meta-analysis. Searching was performed from March to July 2022, on PubMed, National Thesis Center, Dergi Park, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and EBSCO search engines and we included studies from the last 10 years. The Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools used in cross-sectional studies were employed to appraise the methodological quality and performed meta-analyses using a random-effects model for all outcomes. Study data consisted of continuous variables calculated by Mean Difference.ResultsFrom 3732 records received, 21 cross-sectional studies involving 5266 participants were determined to be eligible. Meta-analysis results showed that cesarean section reduced postpartum comfort, albeit not statistically significant (MD: -0.87 95%: -1.98-0.24, Z = 1.53, p = 0.44), whereas the combined results of breastfeeding self-efficacy showed that delivery type did not affect breastfeeding self-efficacy.ConclusionThe results of this review have clinical implications for postpartum caregivers, as the effects of mode of delivery on postpartum comfort and breastfeeding self-efficacy have been well documented in previous studies. The authors recommend caregivers plan maternal care to increase their comfort, taking into account the factors that may affect postpartum comfort in the light of evidence-based practices.
