Reading comprehension self-efficacy and mathematical problem-solving in primary education: a serial mediation model through mathematical reasoning and critical thinking

    Filiz, Tunahan; Kaplan, Kadir

Introduction Mathematical problem-solving is fundamental for academic success and real-life challenges and involves more than procedural and computational skills. As most primary school mathematics problems are text-based, reading comprehension self-efficacy may be closely associated with students' performance in mathematical problem-solving. Grounded in Albert Bandura's social cognitive theory, this study examined the associations between reading comprehension self-efficacy and mathematical problem-solving, focusing on the sequential indirect associations involving of mathematical reasoning and critical thinking. Methods A quantitative, correlational research design was employed. The sample consisted of 518 fourth-grade students from 14 provinces across seven regions of T & uuml;rkiye. Data were collected using validated scales measuring reading comprehension self-efficacy, critical thinking, mathematical reasoning, and mathematical problem-solving skills. Data were analyzed using correlation analysis and regression-based mediation analysis. Results The findings revealed that mathematical reasoning and critical thinking partially accounted for the association between reading comprehension self-efficacy and mathematical problem-solving. The findings indicated significant indirect effects through critical thinking skills (beta = 0.18, K2 = 0.23), mathematical reasoning skills (beta = 0.04, K2 = 0.19), and the sequential pathway from mathematical reasoning to critical thinking (beta = 0.01, K2 = 0.03). Although the sequential mediation effect was statistically significant, its effect size was relatively small compared with the individual mediation effects, particularly that of critical thinking skills.Discussion These results highlight the interconnected roles of foundational cognitive processes in relation to higher-order mathematical problem-solving skills. The study contributes to the literature by emphasizing the relevance of considering reading comprehension self-efficacy, mathematical reasoning, and critical thinking as interconnected factors in early mathematics education.

The impact of ChatGPT-integrated reading activities on the reading attitudes and habits of middle school students

Kaplan, Kadir; Özen, Nesime Ertan; Özcan, Halil Ziya

This study examines the impact of the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT on middle school students' attitudes and reading habits during a brief intervention. Twenty-six students from a middle school in Türkiye—13 in the experimental group and 13 in the control group—took part in an eight-session, four-week quasi-experimental study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach. Data was gathered and analyzed using the Attitudes and Habits towards Reading Scale, the Digital Literacy Scale, and focus group interviews. Preliminary results indicate that students in the experimental group had better reading habits and attitudes than those in the control group. After the ChatGPT intervention was implemented, the experimental group's students showed a significant improvement in their positive attitudes toward reading. However, the experimental group also showed an unexpected increase in negative reading attitudes, warranting further investigation. Three primary themes, covering both the advantages and disadvantages of the application, were identified from the student interview data. These results highlight how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies present a potentially novel way to boost reading motivation in educational settings. However, to use these technologies effectively, educators and students must acquire more knowledge and skills. Longer-term studies with larger sample sizes are also required to validate these initial findings.

The Effect of Self-Regulated Learning-Based Practices on Writing Anxiety: A Curriculum-Focused Mixed Study

Kaplan, Kadir; Akeren, İhsan; Gülden, Bahadır

Anxiety is part of daily life, and when it is not controlled, it negatively affects performance and success. One type of anxiety that students experience at school as a result of the pressures of educational life is writing anxiety. In the current study, the role of self-regulated learning skills in reducing writing anxiety was examined. The fifth-grade self-regulated writing program (S-rWP) was developed, tested, and revised to align with the text types specified in the native language (L1) course curriculum. A multi-stage random sampling method was used to determine the participants to whom the final program would be applied, and the mean pre-test writing anxiety scores of the two groups, an experimental group and a control group, were close to each other. An instructor trained in self-regulated learning strategies conducted the seven-session program to the experimental group for 6 weeks, while in the same period the same curriculum was conducted to the control group using the traditional teaching method, and finally post-test measurements were taken. Quantitative data from the mixed-method study showed that S-rWP was effective in reducing writing anxiety compared to the standard teaching method. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the participants, the L1 teacher and the instructor. The results show that S-rWP is effective in reducing writing anxiety, in line with the quantitative findings. The participants provided information to support the findings through their opinions, and the L1 teacher and instructor provided information to support the findings through their observations. The results appear to stem from the overlap between students’ writing planning, implementation, and evaluation processes and the three stages of self-regulated learning (forethought, performance, and self-reflection). However, despite these positive outcomes, several suggestions for future research are proposed, taking into account the study’s limitations. © The Author(s) 2025. A Step towards Sustainable Education: Does an Entrepreneurial Teacher Nurture Creativity?

Saygın, Muhammet; Say, Serkan; Öztürk, İsmail Yavuz; Gülden, Bahadır; Kaplan, Kadir

This study explores the relationship between teachers’ entrepreneurial behaviors and their creativity-nurturing behaviors, with a particular emphasis on sustainability in education. While previous studies have typically examined entrepreneurship and creativity as separate concepts, often focusing on their individual dimensions, this study underscores the significance of integrating entrepreneurial and creative competencies to promote sustainable educational practices. By highlighting how teachers’ entrepreneurial and creative skills contribute to sustainable education, this study addresses the broader impact these competencies have on meeting the evolving needs and expectations of students, families, and society. This approach supports the development of a more resilient and adaptive education system that can thrive over time. The research involved 1396 classroom teachers from the Mersin province of Turkey. Analysis of the data revealed a strong positive correlation between teachers’ entrepreneurial behaviors and their creativity-nurturing behaviors, indicating that teachers who exhibit higher levels of entrepreneurial traits are more likely to engage in practices that foster creativity or that teachers who exhibit higher levels of creativity nurturing behaviors are more likely to engage in entrepreneurial practices among their students. Thus, the importance of the high-level relationship between entrepreneurial behaviors and creativity-enhancing behaviors in improving sustainability in education has been revealed. This study highlights the need to integrate entrepreneurial skills into teaching practices to support a sustainable educational framework.

21st Century Skills in Curriculums of Turkey, Alberta, Korea and Singapore

    Ozen, Nesime Ertan; Kaplan, Kadir

It is aimed to compare the content of mother tongue curriculums at secondary school level in Alberta, Korea and Singapore. In the study, which was designed in accordance with the holistic multiple case study, one of the qualitative research designs, the data collected on the P21 classification were analyzed by descriptive content analysis. When we look at curriculum in general, it has been determined that the learning outcomes of 21st century skills in all of the programs are close to equal distribution in grades. Among the 21st century skills, learning and innovation skills were found to be the skill most associated with learning outcomes for Korea Secondary School Mother Tongue Curriculum, Singapore Secondary School Mother Tongue Curriculum and Turkish Language Curriculum. It is understood that the skills based on learning to learn, problem solving, associating knowledge with previous learning, critical and creative thinking comes to the fore in the learning outcomes, and it is aimed to educate individuals in this direction. It is understood that the learning outcomes related to flexibility and adaptation skills under life and career skills are not included in all programs. In addition, the lack of learning outcomes in initiative and self-direction, productivity and accountability skills in Alberta Secondary School Mother Tongue Curriculum and Singapore Secondary School Mother Tongue Curriculum shows that life and career skills, which are among the 21st century skills, are neglected in these programs.
