Background Needle-related procedures are commonly performed in childhood and lead to considerable pain. Purpose This randomized controlled study was conducted to compare the effects on venipuncture pain of the Buzzy, an informational animated video, multiple interventions, and standard care in children aged 6-12 years. Methods One hundred eighty children were assigned to the groups using a computerized randomization program. Pain level was evaluated by the children, parents, and their nurses using the Wong-Baker Faces Pain Scale. The level of agreement among the nurse, parents, and children's pain reports was evaluated. Multivariable regression analysis was performed to identify the factors significantly associated with pain score. Results The participants in the Buzzy, video watching, and multiple intervention groups reported lower mean pain scores (child: KW = 28.24, p <.001; parent: KW = 18.51, p <.001; nurse: KW = 44.4, p <.001) than their peers in the control group. Moreover, age was identified as a risk factor affecting pain level (OR = 1.375, 95% CI [1.086, 1.740]; p =.008). Conclusions Buzzy and informational videos are potentially effective methods to facilitate venipuncture-related pain management in children. The use of pain management methods during venipuncture is recommended, especially in children younger than 10 years old.

The impact of surgical intervention on religious coping, psychological well-being, and pain levels in older adult patients: A quasi-experimental study

    Daştan, Buket; Kulakaç, Nurşen

Aim: This study aimed to determine the impact of surgical intervention on religious coping, psychological well-being, and pain levels in older adult patients. Method: The data of the study, which used a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design without a control group, was collected between July 1, 2023, - January 30, 2024. Data collection involved the use of a Personal Information Form, the Religious Coping Scale, the Psychological Well-Being Scale, and the Visual Analog Scale. Results: The results revealed a significant increase in psychological well-being and positive religious coping after surgical intervention compared to presurgical levels (p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that male gender, younger age, enhanced psychological well-being, and positive religious coping were identified as factors contributing to a reduction in postsurgical pain levels. Conclusion: The study's results indicate that surgical intervention serves as a significant variable influencing psychological well-being and religious coping among older adult patients.

Simsek Yaban, Zuleyha; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Kapikiran, Gurkan; Gunes, Huseyin; Kula Sahin, Sennur; Saritas, Serdar

This randomized-controlled trial aimed to investigate the effect of bed exercises on postoperative anxiety, pain, early ambulation and mobilization. This study was conducted with a randomized-controlled trial design and in the general surgical clinic of a research and training hospital. A total of 120 patients (60 in the experimental group and 60 in the control group) scheduled for major abdominal surgery took part in the study. The data were collected using a patient information form, the Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire and the Visual Analog Scale through face-to-face interviews. The patients in the experimental group performed 15-min bed exercises on the day of their operation, as well as on the postoperative first and second days, and the control group underwent only the routinely performed procedures in the clinic. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and t-tests. The sample of our study included major abdominal surgery patients. Ambulation was achieved at a mean time of 4 h earlier in the experimental group. On the postoperative first and second days, the patients in the experimental group had mean mobilization durations that were approximately 2 h longer compared with the patients in the control group. Moreover, the postoperative pain and anxiety levels of the patients in the experimental group were significantly lower than those of the patients in the control group (p < 0.05). We recommend that bed exercises be performed to lower anxiety and pain severity, achieve early ambulation and increase the duration of mobilization among patients following major abdominal surgery.

The Effects of Virtual Reality Intervention Before Total Knee Arthroplasty on Pain, Anxiety, and Vital Signs

    Güneş, Hüseyin; Sarıtaş, Serdar

Objective: In this study, the effects of a virtual reality intervention before total knee arthroplasty on pain, anxiety, and vital signs were investigated. Methods: This randomized controlled study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted with 130 patients included in experimental (n = 65) and control (n = 65) groups. Data were collected using a patient information form, the numeric rating scale (NRS), a vital signs form, and the state anxiety inventory. The patients in the experimental group watched a 20-minute video consisting of sea, forest, waterfall, and animal visuals using virtual reality goggles. Vital signs were recorded before and after the intervention. Vital signs were recorded on the same timeline in the control group, without any intervention. Results: The patients in the experimental group displayed lowered anxiety and pain levels and improvements in their vital signs, except for temperature. There were statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups, except for temperature and diastolic blood pressure (p < .05). Conclusion: The virtual reality intervention reduced pain, anxiety, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate. It is recommended to be implemented before surgery.

The effect of guided imagery on postoperative pain and comfort of geriatric orthopaedic patients: a randomized controlled trial

Ozdemir, Ahmet; Gunes, Hüseyin; Saritas, Serdar

Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of guided imagery on postoperative pain and comfort in geriatric orthopedics patients. Methods: This study was carried out with a randomized-controlled true experimental design. The population of the study included geriatric patients receiving treatment at the orthopedics and traumatology inpatient clinic of a university hospital. Based on random selection, the sample consisted of total of 102 patients, including 40 patients in the experimental group and 40 in the control group. The data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Visual Analog Scale, and the General Comfort Questionnaire. Results: After the guided imagery intervention, the pain levels of the experimental group significantly decreased compared to their baseline pain levels (t = 4.002, P = 0.00). Their perceived comfort was also significantly improved (t = −5.428, P = 0.00). Although the perceived comfort of the control group decreased, this decrease was not statistically significant (t = 0.698, P = 0.489). Conclusion: It is recommended that guided imagery, which is an inexpensive and accessible method, be integrated into the nursing care process to reduce the pain and increase the comfort of geriatric orthopedics patients.
