A Two-Stage ORC Integration to an Existing Fluidized Bed Sewage Sludge Incineration Plant for Power Production in the Scope of Waste-to-Energy

    Abusoglu, A.; Tozlu, A.; Anvari-Moghaddam, A.

This paper presents the design, evaluation, and optimization of an electricity generation system based on the two-stage organic Rankine cycle (TS-ORC), which utilizes the waste heat of an existing fluidized bed sewage sludge incineration (FBSSI) facility. The facility incinerates an average of 300 tons per day of sewage sludge with a dry matter content of 22%. After the drying process, the sewage sludge is burned in a fluidized bed combustor, and exhaust gas at a temperature of about 850-900ºC is released due to the combustion. The system provides the energy required to dry the sludge from this exhaust gas. In this study, a TS-ORC is designed to be coupled to the exhaust gas flowlines discharged to the atmosphere at two different points in the FBSSI plant. The exergy efficiency of the FBSSI facility is found to be 70.5%. Three different working fluids are selected to examine the variations of thermodynamic and thermoeconomic performance parameters of the designed TS-ORC system. The highest power generation in the TS-ORC system (183.40 kW) is achieved using R1234yf as working fluid. R1234yf is also the most expensive fluid for electricity generation among the other working fluids (10.57 $/h). The least electricity generation in the TS-ORC (142.70 kW) occurs at the thermoeconomically most affordable cost with R245fa (9.35 $/h).

Municipal solid waste-based district heating and electricity production: A case study

Tozlu, Alperen; Abusoglu, Aysegul; Ozahi, Emrah; Anvari-Moghaddam, Amjad

In this paper, municipal solid waste (MSW) based electricity production and district heating (DH) potential of Turkey are considered. Three MSW based waste-to-energy (WtE) scenarios is developed: (i) Scenario-I, a DH system integrated into a gas turbine power plant (GTPP), (ii) Scenario-II, a DH system integrated into an organic Rankine cycle (ORC), and (iii) Scenario-III, which is based solely on a DH system. As a result of the thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyzes of these developed scenarios using an existing MSW-based cogeneration facility's actual operating data, the system with the most extended payback period (about 5 years) is found as the GTPP-DH system developed in Scenario-I, which also has the highest investment cost. On the other hand, the system with the shortest payback period (about 2 years) is found as the DH system developed in Scenario-III, which also has the lowest investment cost. Overall exergy efficiencies of the GTTP-DH, ORC-DH, and DH systems are found to be 41.86%, 16.15%, and 31.87%, respectively. When the developed WtE scenarios adapted to the pilot provinces selected from each geographical region of Turkey, it is found that the GTPP system developed in Scenario-I can increase the power generation capacity of MSW plants for each province by about 20%.

Thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses of an organic Rankine cycle adapted gas turbine cycle using S-CO2

Tozlu, Alperen; Özahi, Emrah; Abusoglu, Aysegul

In this study, a model of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) adapted gas turbine cycle using supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) as working fluid is performed. Thermodynamic analyses of system are carried out using Aspen Plus and EES programs. As a result of the thermodynamic analyses, electricity production capacity, energy and exergy efficiencies of proposed system are evaluated as 1530.88 kW, 23.30 % and 59.60 %, respectively. For the thermoeconomic analysis of the system, specific exergy costing method, SPECO, is applied as widely used one among the second law based methods. Unit exergetic cost of electricity production for 1 kWh is found to be 7.28 cent and the total cost of electricity production for 1530.88 kWh is found to be 114.43 $. The annual return from the system of the ORC adapted gas turbine cycle using S-CO(2)which has total investment cost of 3,033,300 $ is evaluated as 741,146 $ taking into account the difference between the cost of electricity production and sale price of electricity. As a result of the thermoeconomic analysis, the payback period of system is found to be 4.09 years.

In this study, a model of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) adopted gas turbine cycle using supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) as working fluid is performed. Thermodynamic analyses of a system are carried out using Aspen Plus and EES programs. As a result of thermodynamic analyses, electricity production capacity, energy and exergy efficiencies of the proposed system are evaluated as 1530.88 kW, 23.30% and 59.60%, respectively. For the thermoeconomic analysis of the system, specific exergy costing method, SPECO, is applied as widely used one among the second law based methods. Unit exergetic cost of electricity production for 1 kWh is found to be 7.28 ¢ and the total cost of electricity production for 1530.88 kWh is found to be 114.43 $. Annual return from the system of ORC adopted gas turbine cycle using S-CO2which has the total investment cost of 3,033,300 $ is evaluated as 741,146 $ taking into account the difference between the cost of electricity production and the sale price of electricity. As a result of the thermoeconomic analysis, the payback period of the system is found to be 4.09 years. Purpose: To propose a model (an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) adopted gas turbine cycle using supercritical CO2: S-CO2) for an existing solid waste power plant in the frame of the heat recovery (Waste-to-energy). Theory and Methods: Thermodynamic and thermoeconomic analyses were utilized for the proposed model in order to evaluate the energy and exergy efficiencies. Results: The energy and exergy efficiencies of the system were calculated as 23.30 % and 61.60 % respectively. 1 kWh of electricity generated from GT-ORC system is produced to 7.28 ¢. The total electricity production cost of 1530.88 kW-hours was calculated as $ 111.43. Conclusion: The total cost of the developed GT-ORC system is $ 3,033,300. The difference between the cost of electricity generated from the GT-ORC system and the cost of the electricity sales is expected to be $ 741,146 annually for the proposed GT-ORC system. As a result of this profit, the payback period of the system was calculated as 4.09 years.
