An examination of performance enhancement attitudes and belief levels regarding sports supplements among students receiving education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices

Karakaya, Umut Can; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali

Background: This study examines the changes in performance enhancement attitudes and sports supplement belief levels among sports sciences faculty students after education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices. In the highly competitive environment of modern sports, nutrition and ergogenic aids are crucial in enhancing athletic performance and preventing injuries. However, research in this area is limited, and existing literature emphasizes the need to explore the relationship between education and these topics. Methods: The study employed an experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test method. The research group comprised 61 students (24 female and 37 male) from the Faculty of Sport Sciences at Bayburt University. Data collection tools included the “Personal Information Form,” the “Performance Enhancement Attitude Scale (PEAS),” and the “Sports Supplement Belief Scale (SSBS).” Data were collected via Google Forms and analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. The skewness and kurtosis values were calculated to assess the data distribution, and parametric tests, including t-tests and ANOVA, were applied. Results: The findings revealed that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices significantly improved students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. For example, PEAS scores increased from a pre-test mean of 38.74 to a post-test mean of 44.13 (p < 0.05), representing a change of approximately 13.91%. However, no significant changes were observed in SSBS scores. This suggests that students’ beliefs regarding sports supplements may be shaped by prior knowledge and experiences, making them less influenced by the educational intervention. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that education on ergogenic aids and anti-doping practices can positively influence students’ performance-enhancement attitudes. However, more in-depth educational programs may be required to impact beliefs about sports supplements. These findings can guide the development of more effective educational programs to enhance athletic performance and safeguard athlete health. By providing evidence-based insights, this study significantly contributes to the existing literature and supports the development of policies and educational initiatives in anti-doping and athlete education.

Examination of the Effects of Archery Exercises on Some Physical Parameters of University Students

Türkmen, Mutlu; Kul, Murat; Gönen, Mevlüt; Karataş, İsmail; Ceyhan, Mehmet Ali; Yildirim, Ümit; Türker, Üstün; Ustabulut, Mete Yusuf

The aim of this study was to examine the effect of eight-week modern archery training on some physical parameters of university students. In the study, one-group pretest-posttest design from the experimental research methods was used. The study group consisted of a total of 25 voluntary- students were chosen randomly 10 female and 15 male, undergraduate, and graduate levels during the fall semester of 2020-2021 academic year at Bayburt University, who have not received Olympic archery training before. The Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test was applied to analyse the data of the study. Regarding female participants, within the scope of Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test results; according to the analysis results of the variables “Index Finger”, “Middle Finger”, “Ring Finger”, statistically significant differences were found between the pretest and posttest values for each variable. Regarding male participants, within the scope of Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test results; according to the analysis of the results of the participants’ “Back-Leg”, “Index Finger”, “Middle Finger” variables, statistically significant differences were found between the pretest and posttest values for each variable.

Investigation of the relationship between the self-confidence and motivation of high school students participating school sport contests

    Toktas, Sermet; Bas, Mustafa

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between the levels of self-confidence and motivation of high school students participating sport contests at school and the various demographic variables (gender, high school type, sport age, sports branch and sport category). In the study, survey model, which is frequently used in descriptive research method is used. The population of the study consisted of students who studied at high schools and those who attended contests in Adıyaman, while sample consisted of 856 athletes, 39% of whom were female students (334) and 61% (522) of whom were male students. To collect data for the study, personal data form, ''Motivation in Sport'' scale, which was developed by Pelletier et al. (1995) and adapted to Turkish by Pelletier et al. and ''Self-confidence'' scale developed by Akın (2007) were used. SPSS 21.00 package program was used for data analysis. Multiple regression analysis, Pearson product-moment correlation co-efficient technique, independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance were performed in the quantitative data of the research. According to the findings obtained from the study, it was determined that there was a significant relationship between demographic information and self-confidence and motivation levels. While there was a significant difference in gender self-confidence level with intrinsic and extrinsic self-confidence and high school type sports branch, there was no significant difference between sport age and sport category. A significant relationship was found between the sub-dimension of non-motivation, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation, and there was no significant relationship with other independent variables such as gender, sports branch, sport category and sport age. Based on these results, it is recommended that secondary school students participate in sports competitions to have some elements that may have positive effects on their self-confidence and motivation.
