Yield Performance and Oil Composition of Safflower (Carthamus Tinctorius L.) Cultivars Under Semi-Arid Conditions in Northern Türkiye

Cosar, Ibrahim; Gul, Volkan; Sefaoglu, Firat

The shortage of vegetable oil in Turkey is escalating daily. Increasing the production of safflower oil seeds, which are particularly adapted to semi-arid climatic conditions, could reduce dependence on foreign sources for vegetable oil. In this study, the yield and quality characteristics of eight safflower varieties were evaluated under semi-arid ecological conditions in northern Turkey. Field trials were conducted over two years (2020–2021) with three replications, following the ‘’Randomized Block Experiment Design’’. Significant differences were observed between the varieties in terms of the examined parameters. The highest average grain yield (1730.9 kg ha⁻¹) was obtained from the Göktürk variety, the highest oil content (30.7%) from the Balcı variety, and the highest oil yield (470.1 kg ha⁻¹) from the Olas variety. The highest oleic acid content (50.14% ± 3.9) was obtained from the Koc variety, and the highest stearic acid content (2.68% ± 0.1) was obtained from the Hasankendi variety. The linoleic acid (77.71% ± 0.4) and palmitic acid (5.92% ± 0.1) ratios were found to be higher in the Dincer variety compared to other varieties. The research highlights the importance of genotypes in asparagus. It demonstrates that the Göktürk and Olas varieties stand out in terms of yield and yield components in semi-arid ecosystems. These results provide variety-specific information for regional adaptation in safflower breeding and under challenging climatic conditions.

Yield, yield components and fatty acid composition of Artemisia dracunculus L. local breeds under organic cultivation conditions

    Göktas, Ozlem; Gidik, Betul

The importance of medicinal and aromatic plants in people's lives is growing due to their various uses and diverse cultivation conditions. This study aimed to determine the yield and yield components and quality features (oil ratio and fatty acid composition according to GC-MS) of six different tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.) local breeds grown organically in Bayburt province, Turkey. For this purpose, the data obtained by growing the plants in the experimental area during the two crop years, 2018 and 2019, were evaluated. As for the yield values, the highest values for green herb yield (275.41 kg ha-1), drug herb yield (99.89 kg ha-1), drug-herb percentage (44.00%), green leaf yield (208.97 kg ha-1), green leaf percentage (75.09%) and drog leaf yield (72.48 kg ha-1) were found in the local breed from Bayburt Central location. It was found that the oil percentages, evaluated to determine the quality traits, ranged from 5.39% to 7.02%. The most important fatty acid was alpha-linolenic acid (9.49%-23.1%), followed by linoleic acid (4.18%-13.89%) and palmitic acid (4.05-13.89%). As far as we know, this is the first study investigating tarragon's total oil content and fatty acid composition. The results show that the total oil content of this plant, which has remarkable pharmacological effects, is present in useful quantities compared to the leafy green and does not contain fatty acids that prevent its consumption as food. Therefore, this plant is expected to be used directly in various food products.

Investigation of ball milling effect on superconducting properties of oleic acid added bulk MgB2 superconductors produced by two different methods; [İki farklı metot ile üretilen oleik asit katkılı külçe MgB2 süperiletkenlerin süperiletkenlik özellikleri üzerine bilyeli öğütme etkisinin araştırılması]

    Erdem, Özge

The effect of ball milling on the microstructure and some superconducting parameters such as flux pinning force (Fp) and critical current density (Jc) of the oleic acid (C18H34O2) added MgB2 bulk samples produced by two different methods, was analysed in this article. In the first method, ball milling was applied to the samples produced by using boron (B) powders coated with carbon (C) released from oleic acid. In the second method, oleic acid was mixed with magnesium (Mg) and B powders at the same time and then the same ball milling process used in the first method was applied to the powder mixture. The structural, magnetic and electrical properties of the produced samples were analysed. The results showed that ball milling process enhances the homogeneity of the structure, decreases the grain size and improves the grain connectivity of MgB2. Also, C substitution into MgB2 lattice resulting in an increase in electron scattering and disorders, enhances after ball milling process. It supplies a significant increase in Jc at high fields and causes a slightly decrease in transition temperature (Tc), especially for the samples produced by using the first method. Because the first method supports the ball milling effect on the homogenous dispersion of oleic acid addition in the MgB2 structure and the C entrance to MgB2 lattice, acting as pinning centres, the best Jc and Fp values at high fields was obtained for the produced samples with second method.

Fatty acid composition of sunflower seeds from different locations in the north of Turkey

    Gul, Volkan

Because of sunflower is well adapted to the conditions of all region types, it ranks the first in terms of vegetable oil production in our country. The content of fatty acids that determine the quality of sunflower oil is affected by factors such as genotype and environment, especially climate and soil struc-ture. This research examines the oil and fatty acid ratios of sunflower grains grown on a producer basis and presented to the market in 2015 in Samsun (Bafra, Vezirkopru and Havza), Amasya (Merzifon), Corum (Center) and Tokat (Turhal) in the Middle Black Sea Region selected according to the density of oil sunflower to determine the quality of oil. According to the results of the research, average fat ratio was found to be between 41.57% and 45.67%, palmitic and stearic acids, which are basic saturated fatty acids, between 5.65% and 6.44% and from 3.84% and 4.81% linoleic acid (omega 6), linolenic acid (omega 3) and oleic acids (omega 9), which are unsaturated fatty acids, were found between 50.33 and 63.42%, 0.24 and 0.29% and 25.32 and 37.50%, respectively. These results indicate that the sun-flower seeds cultivated in the Amasya-Merzifon re-gion are at the forefront due to their oil quality char- A cteristics.
