Effect of Virtual Reality Glasses on Mild Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial

    Daştan, Buket; Ünal, Hediye

PURPOSE: The current randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of a virtual reality (VR) glasses intervention on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in older adults. METHOD: This study was conducted with 24 participants (12 in the intervention group and 12 in the control group) admitted to a neurology outpatient clinic. Participants completed a descriptive information form, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The intervention group watched VR videos 3 days per week for 4 weeks, whereas the control group received no intervention. RESULTS: Participants in the VR intervention group showed improvement in MCI, whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. CONCLUSION: VR interventions may serve as effective tools to enhance cognitive functions in older adults with MCI. Expanding the intervention content and tailoring applications to address specific symptoms may yield more comprehensive results.

Ozcan, Aysegul; Ozdil, Kamuran; Kaya, Senay Sermet; Sezer, Fatma

Background: The effects of an educational strategy, “demonstration, puzzle, dance, song (DPDS),” on the hand washing skills of primary school students was ex-amined. Method: This study used a quasi-experimental, training research format with a pre-and posttest research design and was conducted by a research team from a university department of public health nursing. The study included 671 (90.2%) of 744 students who attended primary schools in Nevsehir, Turkey. Data were collected with a demographic data collection form and a Hand Washing Skills Evaluation List. McNemar, Fried-man, and Wilcoxon tests were used to analyze findings. Results: Immediately after training, all steps of hand washing were performed at higher levels than before training (p < .01), and the difference between hand washing times was significant (p < .001). Conclusion: Hand washing skills and times increased after undergo-ing hand washing training using the DPDS method. [J Contin Educ Nurs. 2020;51(4):158-166.].
