The pharmaceutical and nutraceutical potentials of whole fruit, pulp and seeds of Rosa pimpinellifolia L. were evaluated. Forty-two phenolic compounds and two triterpenoids were identified in extracts by LC-MS/MS and GC–MS, respectively. The most prominent compounds were ellagic acid, catechin, epicatechin, tannic acid, quercetin, oleanolic acid, and ursolic acid. The highest enzyme inhibitory activities of the extracts (94.83%) were obtained against angiotensin-converting enzyme and were almost equal to those of the commercial standard (lisinopril, 98.99%). Whole fruit and pulp extracts (IC50:2.47 and 1.52 μg DW/mL) exhibited higher antioxidant capacity than the standards (α-tocopherol, IC50:9.89 μg DW/mL). The highest antibacterial activity was obtained against Bacillus cereus (MIC: 256 μg/mL) for the whole fruit extract. Correlation analyses were conducted to find the correlation between individual phenolics and enzyme inhibitory activities. The results showed the remarkable future of not only the edible part but also the seeds of black rose hips in phytochemical and functional aspects.

A Comparative Study on the Bioactivity and Mineral Content of Different Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Leaves Cultivated in Türkiye

Yildiz, Hilal; Cakir, Ozlem; Cakiroglu, Kubra; Karatas, Neva

The mineral composition, total phenolic content, radical scavenging, and antibacterial activity of 17 Vitis vinifera L. leaves obtained from vineyards in northeast Türkiye were investigated in this study. The antibacterial activities of grapevine leaf extracts were investigated by the disk diffusion method against five bacterial strains, and all leaf extracts showed inhibitory activity on both Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus. The radical scavenging activity of grapevine leaf extracts was evaluated using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays. The ‘Gineş’ cultivar had the highest level of radical scavenging activity, while the ‘Ciklap’ cultivar had the lowest. The total phenolic content of leaf extracts was in the range of 172.66–483.33 µg GAE/mg DW. Grapevine leaf extracts were examined in terms of 15 different elements. The most abundant element in varieties of grapevine leaves was potassium, and its concentration varied between 5208.83 and 13,586.49 mg/kg. The results indicated that V. vinifera L. leaves had strong antioxidant and antibacterial activity, and the varieties of grapevine had a significant impact on these parameters (p < 0.001). Mineral and trace element contents were also significantly affected by cultivars (p < 0.05).

Some Physicochemical Characteristics, Bioactive Content and Antioxidant Characteristics of Non-Sprayed Barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) Increasing consumer demands for indigenous, non-sprayed with pesticides and less-known or “forgotten” fruits necessitate knowledge on their breeding, cultivation, biochemical content, harvesting and marketing. Anatolia is rich for wild edible fruit species and barberry is abundant throughout Anatolia. The aim of this study was to determine some important physicochemical characteristics, bioactive content and antioxidant capacity of fruits from nineteen promising barberry (Berberis vulgaris L.) genotypes grown in the Coruh valley, Northeastern Anatolia. The results indicated genotype-specific differences for most of the physicochemical characteristics, antioxidant capacity and the content of some bioactive compounds. Fruit mass ranged from 0.073 (‘Coruh-7’) to 0.267 g (‘Coruh-11’). Total phenolic content ranged from 2532 (‘Coruh-’) to 3719 mg GAE per liter fruit juice (‘Coruh-11’). The genotype ‘Coruh-12’ had the highest total monomeric anthocyanin content (1004 mg per liter fruit juice) as cyanidin-3-glucoside. The highest total antioxidant capacity was observed in fruits of ‘Coruh-8’ and ‘Coruh-9’ genotypes with all three antioxidant-determining methods. We conclude that the barberry fruits represent a good source of bioactive phytochemicals because of their high phenolic and anthocyanin contents.
