Özçelik, Ayşe Özfer; Esgin, Ozge; Ethemoğlu, Filiz Banu; Özyürek, Serkan; Aykırı, Hilal

This study aims to evaluate the association of the enteral nutrition support on mortality, biochemical parameters, and health markers in geriatric patients with COVID-19 treated in intensive care units (ICUs). A retrospective cohort analysis was conducted on 226 patients aged 60 years and older admitted to the COVID-19 adult ICU of Yıldırım Beyazıt University Training and Research Hospital in 2021. Demographics, ICU stay characteristics, biochemical parameters, and nutrition therapy details were collected from hospital records. Patients receiving enteral nutrition were categorized by product type (e.g., diabetic, immunonutrition, glutamine-containing, etc.), and their association on mortality, biochemical markers, and ICU outcomes were evaluated. The mortality rate was 50.4%, with an mean ICU stay of 9.63±6.50 days. Most patients (90.3%) had chronic conditions. Nutrition therapy was administered to 138 patients using various products. Immunonutrition products were associated with improved albumin levels and reduced mortality (p<0.05). Chronic conditions significantly increased mortality risk and ICU stay duration (p<0.05). Multivariate analysis revealed that longer ICU stays and the presence of chronic diseases independently reduced survival probability. Enteral nutrition support, particularly immunonutrition, may benefit geriatric ICU patients with COVID-19 by improving biochemical parameters and reducing mortality risk. Although patients receiving diabetic and glutamine-enriched products have a higher incidence of pressure ulcers, it should be considered that such products are likely to have been used in higher-risk patients.

Investigation of the relationship of cardiac troponin I and cortisol hormone levels with some variables in children: Relational screening model

Kırbaş, Zila Özlem; Bayraktar, Bülent; Aktaş, Elif Odabaşı

This study aimed to determine salivary cardiac troponin I and cortisol hormone levels in primary school students to evaluate the cardiac response depending on age and gender variables. The sample of the study consisted of a total of 180 children, including boys and girls aged 8, 9, and 10 years old. The ELISA technique determined cTnI and cortisol hormone levels in saliva samples taken from the children included in the study. There was a significant difference between the salivary cTnI levels and the age levels of the children in the groups (p<0.001). A significant difference was found between the mean level of salivary cortisol hormone and the gender and age variables of the child (p<0.001). As a result of the study, a positive, weak, and statistically significant correlation was found between salivary cTnI and cortisol hormone levels (p<0.05). In the model created for the dependent variable of saliva cTnI, it was found that 7.5% of the variance was explained by the independent variables (R2 adjusted=.075), and the age variable was a statistically significant positive predictor (p<0.001). In the model created for the dependent variable of cortisol hormone, it was found that 48.4% of the variance was explained by the independent variables (R2 adjusted=.484), and age and gender were positive statistically significant predictors (p<0.001). Within the scope of the data obtained in our current study, it was determined that cortisol hormone levels were also high in children with high salivary cardiac troponin I levels. It is thought that examining and monitoring cardiac troponin I and cortisol hormone levels may be useful parameters in the nursing care and practice of children with heart disease risk and disease.

Glossophobia (fear of public speaking, presentation anxiety) is an anxiety disorder characterized by extreme fear and anxiety about public speaking. Glossophobia is a very common phobia worldwide, reportedly affecting 75% of the population. This study aims to examine the effects of different aroma inhalations (Thyme and Juniper) on public speaking anxiety, and salivary cortisol hormone levels in university students. The sample of the research consisted of a total of 104 university students, male and female, between the ages of 18-20. In the first step, cortisol hormone levels were determined using the ELISA technique in the saliva samples taken from the university students included in the study. The average salivary cortisol hormone level and public speaking anxiety levels of the university students participating in the study showed a positive and statistically significant relationship (p=0.001). There is a significant negative correlation between the participants' public speaking anxiety and post-thyme oil status at a 99% confidence level and a 1% significance level, r=-.318. When public speaking anxiety and juniper oil were analyzed, a significant negative relationship was found at r=-.290, a 99% confidence level, and a 1% significance level. It was also concluded that inhalation of 2% thyme essential oil in individuals with high glossophobia is both safe and beneficial in reducing anxiety levels.

Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a type of eating disorder marked by an excessive preoccupation with eating healthily to preserve and promote health, which surpasses normal levels of concern. This study aims to investigate the correlation between orthorexic tendencies, anthropometric measurements, and several other characteristics among university students. A cross-sectional study was done with a sample size of 307 university students from various departments, consisting of 228 females and 79 males. The data-gathering process consisted of administering a demographic information form and the ORTO-11 questionnaire. Anthropometric measurements, such as weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference, and chest circumference, were measured. In addition, Body Mass Index (BMI) was calculated. The TANITA BC-418 equipment was used to measure the weight of the participants, while a flexible tape measure was used to measure their height, waist circumference, hip circumference, and chest circumference. The BMI was calculated by the individual's weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in meters). The data analysis encompassed the utilization of descriptive statistics, t-tests, variance analysis, and Pearson correlation analysis. A score of 25 or lower on the ORTO-11 scale was categorized as orthorexic, whereas a score higher than 25 was deemed normal. The average age and orthorexia scores of the subjects were 20.81±1.86 and 27.76±4.42 for females, and 21.38±4.14 and 28.11±4.37 for males, respectively. It was determined that 29.3% of the participants were found to display orthorexic tendencies, while the remaining 70.7% did not. There were no statistically significant variations in age, hip circumference, and orthorexia scores across genders (p>0.05). No statistically significant relationship was found between the total orthorexia scores and BMIs of the individuals (r=-.051, p>0.05). ON is associated with psychological and social complications, which in turn contribute to the development of disordered eating patterns. The results of this study indicate that determining the frequency of orthorexic tendencies among university students may contribute to the development of strategies for its prevention.

    Kırbaş, Zila Özlem; Şahin, Emel

This study aimed to investigate the association between perceptions of family-to-family support and the general well-being and psychological resilience of mothers raising children with special needs. Employing a descriptive correlational research design, the study included mothers of children aged 0-18 residing in a city center in northeastern Türkiye. Data collection was conducted through face-to-face interviews using the Personal Information Form, Brief Psychological Resilience Scale, General Well-Being Scale Short Form, and Family-to-Family Support Perception Scale for Families of Disabled Children. The results revealed a positive and significant relationship between mothers' perceived level of family-to-family support and their psychological resilience (β=0.437, p<0.01). Furthermore, a positive relationship was observed between mothers' general well-being levels and perceived support (β=0.315, p<0.05). However, no significant relationship was found between general well-being levels and psychological resilience (β=0.189, p>0.05). These findings underscore the significant connections between perceived family-to-family support, general well-being, and psychological resilience among mothers of children with special needs. They suggest a critical need for developing enhanced social and psychological support mechanisms to alleviate the stress and difficulties experienced by these mothers.

    Kizil, Hamit Emre

The genus Prangos has been used for centuries as an antibacterial and antidiabetic agent. In this study, Prangos ferulacea (L.) Lindl. species, which is frequently encountered in various regions of our country, especially in Northeast Anatolia, and known as "çaşır or çakşır" among the people, were collected from the flora of Bayburt Kop Mountain, and methanol extract of the stem parts of this plant was obtained. Afterward, the cytotoxic effect of this extract on the non-small cell lung cancer cell line (H-460) was determined and compared with the cytotoxic activity on the lung fibroblast cell line (MRC-5). The results obtained using the Wst-8 method, it was determined that no toxic effect occurred in the MRC-5 cell line after both 24 and 48 hours of methanol extract treatment, while a toxic effect occurred in the H-460 cell line (125 μg/ml and 62.5 μg/ml) after 48 hours of application. However, this toxic effect was not statistically significant.

Karakas, Ümıt; Bayram, Sinan; Kizil, Hamit Emre; Öztürk, Serdar

Melanins, which are divided into five different subgroups as eumelanin, pheomelanin, allomelanin, neuromelanin and pyomelanin, are a heterogeneous and amor- phous biopolymer family. Although melanin is produced in many different ways today, it is more practical, and more economical to produce melanin using bacterial strains. The eumelanin pigment, which is the subject of this study, was obtained using Streptomyces parvus BSB49 strain, and its antiproliferative effect at various concentrations against small cell (DMS-114) and non-small cell (H-460) lung cancer was determined. According to our results, the synthesized eumelanin molecule was statistically cytotoxic on non-small cell lung cancer cell line (H-460) at concentrations of 3.125 and 1.56 μg/mL after 24 hours of treatment (IC50=8 μg/mL) and only at a concentration of 3.125 μg/mL after 48 hours of treatment (IC50=8.4 μg/mL). In the small cell lung cancer cell line (DMS-114), no statistically cytotoxic concentration was detected (p<0.05).

Bulbuloglu, Semra; Sarıtaş, Serdar; Güneş, Hüseyin; Kapikiran, Gurkan

In our study, we aimed to examine the effect of nursing care satisfaction on the pain and anxiety levels of patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. This descriptive study was conducted with the participation of patients who underwent surgery in the orthopedic clinic of a training and research hospital, and they were in the early postoperative period. Patient information form, Newcastle Satisfaction with Nursing Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used in data collection. In this study, we found that 41.2% of the orthopedic patients were between the ages of 36 and 50, and 60.4% of them were women. Both nursing care satisfaction and anxiety levels were found to be higher in women than men (p<0.05). The highest satisfaction rate was found among patients aged 18-35 years old, and the highest anxiety level was found in patients over the age of 66. In our study, we found that higher anxiety levels increased pain intensity, and a high level of nursing care satisfaction could be seen in various pain and anxiety levels. Our study showed that nursing care satisfaction was affected by pain and anxiety in patients who underwent orthopedic surgery. In addition, it showed that pain and anxiety trigger each other. Clinicians should be aware of the negative effects of pain and anxiety on postoperative recovery. Strategies to increase nursing care satisfaction should be developed.
