Daştan, Buket; Ünal, Hediye
PURPOSE: The current randomized controlled trial evaluated the effect of a virtual reality (VR) glasses intervention on mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in older adults. METHOD: This study was conducted with 24 participants (12 in the intervention group and 12 in the control group) admitted to a neurology outpatient clinic. Participants completed a descriptive information form, the Mini-Mental State Examination, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment. The intervention group watched VR videos 3 days per week for 4 weeks, whereas the control group received no intervention. RESULTS: Participants in the VR intervention group showed improvement in MCI, whereas no significant change was observed in the control group. CONCLUSION: VR interventions may serve as effective tools to enhance cognitive functions in older adults with MCI. Expanding the intervention content and tailoring applications to address specific symptoms may yield more comprehensive results.

Prospective technicians for elderly care are indispensable elements that should be included in the relevant system to meet the ever-increasing care needs of the aging world population and increase the quality of care. This research was conducted to evaluate the attitudes of students in the elderly care program at the associate degree toward the older adults and their willingness to provide care. The sample of this descriptive and cross-sectional study comprised 525 volunteer students in elderly care programs in five vocational schools of higher education located in northeastern Turkey between June 2020 and September 2020. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage, independent t-test, and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The study showed that the mean age of the students involved in the study was 20.3 ± 1.6. 77.7% of them were female, and 61.9% were in the first grade. Students’ willingness to care for older adults was found to be at a moderate level (36.3 ± 6.0). The students had a negative attitude (137.4 ± 26.7) about aging and elderliness. The willingness of male students to care for older adults was significantly higher (p <.05). Those who did not live with an older adult in the same house before had a more negative attitude toward them (p <.05). To get rid of personal and social stereotypes and have a positive attitude toward older adults, students should be provided to work in clinical environments that will allow them to spend more time with them.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2022Exploring Problem Areas of Elderly Patients with Diabetes and the Support Provided by Their Family
Dastan, Buket; Hintistan, Sevilay
Objective: Diabetes increases problems in emotional areas particularly among the elderly patients by aggravating negative emotions such as loss, anxiety and fear and makes these patients need higher level of family support. This study aims at exploring problematic areas of the elderly diabetic patients and their family support levels. Methods: The data of this descriptive study were collected by the researcher by conducting a face to face interview with 218 elderly diabetic patients who presented to Endocrine Polyclinics of State Hospital between October 2015 and October 2016. To collect the data, Patient Information Form, Problem Areas in Diabetes Scale (PAID) and Hensarling's Diabetes Family Support Scale (HDFSS) were used. Results: Although problem areas among the patients were found to be fewer than expected; it was found that there were significant differences between problem areas and sex, diabetes time, treatment type, length of oral antidiabetic medicine use and insulin use, development of diabetes-related complication and hospitalization due to these complications in the recent year (p<0.05). Besides, the family support levels of the elderly patients were below the moderate level, and the number of individuals the patients live together with, the number of people receiving support due to diabetes and the number of people who received support from their spouses because of diabetes was a significant variable that affected HDFSS total score and the subscale scores (p<0.05). Conclusion: For a better diabetes management, sex and diabetes related variables should be taken into consideration while delivering health services and increasing family support levels can make positive contributions to the mood of the elderly patients.
