The effect of digital and traditional methods on learning and retention in preschool education: a comparison of virtual reality, augmented reality, web-based, and manipulative materials

    Tutkun, Cansu

The pedagogical use of digital technologies in early childhood education is increasingly prevalent today. Augmented reality, virtual reality, and web-based content have the potential to make children’s learning processes more interactive and lasting. In this context, the study compared the effects of different teaching methods presented with augmented reality, virtual reality, web-based, and manipulative (traditional) materials on children’s learning and retention levels. In the quasi-experimental study, a total of 400 children attending preschool education institutions in Bayburt, Turkey, were divided into four different groups and evaluated using a “pre-test–post-test–retention test” model. The results revealed that the virtual reality group achieved the highest scores in both learning and retention levels, followed by the augmented reality and web-based groups, while the manipulative group demonstrated the lowest performance. In addition, the virtual reality environment was evaluated by children as the most enjoyable and satisfying method, and children in this group were the most willing to use the training again. These results show that digital technologies such as virtual and augmented reality in preschool education should be evaluated as effective tools in terms of achieving pedagogical goals and increasing children’s interest in learning.

The Effect of Virtual Reality Training on Basic Hitting Performance in Tennis

ÇELİK, Hüsniye; TOZOĞLU, Erdoğan; AĞDUMAN, Fatih

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of virtual reality (VR) training on basic stroke performance in tennis. In the fall semester of the 2023-2024 academic year at Atatürk University, 20 students without prior tennis experience participated. They were divided into two equal groups: the control group, which received only traditional training, and the experimental group, which received a combination of VR and traditional training. Each group included five male and five female students, all participating in an 8-week training program. A pre-test-post-test control group experimental design was used. Data were collected through a VR application and a performance test administered before and after training. Descriptive statistics and normality tests were conducted, with paired t-tests for intra-group comparisons and ANCOVA for inter-group comparisons, using SPSS 25. Results showed significant improvements in stroke performance in both groups. However, analysis revealed no statistically significant difference in forehand stroke performance between groups. In contrast, the experimental group demonstrated significant improvement in backhand performance compared to the control group. Findings suggest that both VR-based and traditional methods can effectively enhance basic stroke performance in tennis. Specifically, VR training proved particularly effective for improving backhand strokes, while no additional benefit was observed for forehand strokes compared to traditional training.

Virtual Reality Technology in Nursing Education: A Qualitative Study

Avşar, Gülçin; Çelik, Şeymanur; Doğan, Sevgi; Çiftçi, Bahar

Virtual reality (VR) technology plays a significant role in nursing education by enhancing the quality of training by applying knowledge, decision-making, intervention completion and feedback. This study aims to examine nursing students' experiences and perceptions regarding the ventrogluteal injection training provided through VR technology. Conducted between May and June 2022, this qualitative descriptive phenomenology study took place at a state university in Turkey, involving 70 students who participated in Ventrogluteal Drug Administration training using VR glasses. The sample included 12 students selected via the Criterion Sampling Method. Data collection tools comprised the ‘Descriptive Information Form’ and a ‘Semi-Structured Questionnaire’. Qualitative data were analysed using the Content Analysis Method, while quantitative data were assessed through descriptive statistical methods (frequency, percentage, mean). The study identified 13 codes, four sub-themes and two main themes from the students' evaluations. The first main theme, ‘Weaknesses of Virtual Simulation’, included two sub-themes: ‘Due to its Nature’ and ‘Due to its Technique’, resulting in five codes. The second main theme, ‘Strengths of Virtual Simulation’, was divided into two sub-themes: ‘Permanence, Integrity, and Applicability’ and ‘Emotions towards Virtual Simulation’, with eight codes identified. The findings indicate that students view VR technology positively in their education. However, they also highlighted specific issues related to the simulation's technique and inherent nature.

The Effects of Virtual Reality Intervention Before Total Knee Arthroplasty on Pain, Anxiety, and Vital Signs

    Güneş, Hüseyin; Sarıtaş, Serdar

Objective: In this study, the effects of a virtual reality intervention before total knee arthroplasty on pain, anxiety, and vital signs were investigated. Methods: This randomized controlled study with a pretest-posttest design was conducted with 130 patients included in experimental (n = 65) and control (n = 65) groups. Data were collected using a patient information form, the numeric rating scale (NRS), a vital signs form, and the state anxiety inventory. The patients in the experimental group watched a 20-minute video consisting of sea, forest, waterfall, and animal visuals using virtual reality goggles. Vital signs were recorded before and after the intervention. Vital signs were recorded on the same timeline in the control group, without any intervention. Results: The patients in the experimental group displayed lowered anxiety and pain levels and improvements in their vital signs, except for temperature. There were statistically significant differences between the experimental and control groups, except for temperature and diastolic blood pressure (p < .05). Conclusion: The virtual reality intervention reduced pain, anxiety, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate. It is recommended to be implemented before surgery.

The effect of VR and traditional videos on learner retention and decision making

Yildirim, Gurkan; Yildirim, Serkan; Dolgunsoz, Emrah

Virtual reality (VR) as computer-mediated 3-D environments including real-life situations presented via different tools in which users can interact effectively with visuals. This study is significant as it primarily aimed to investigate effects of VR on retention by comparing it with traditional 2-D videos. The main aim of this study is to compare the effect of VR and 2-D videos on learner retention and decision making. About 18 students from the Department of English language teaching in an age range of 18-20 (nine males and nine females) voluntarily participated in this study and took course credits. As all participants were tested under the same two conditions in different time periods; repeated measures were chosen for statistical analysis. It can be inferred that both technologies have similar effects on short-term retention and VR does not provide any extra retention performance. However, VR was found to have a significant effect on long-term retention.
