This study presents a comparative experimental investigation of magnetic force parameters in high-speed electrodynamic levitation systems using permanent magnet arrays and high-temperature superconductors. A novel modular test platform with a rotating aluminium rail, cryostat, and integrated three-axis force measurement unit was employed to evaluate levitation and drag forces under controlled conditions at linear velocities up to 280 km/h. Three different permanent magnet arrays configurations were designed and tested at working gaps of 10, 12, and 15 mm, while high-temperature superconductors bulks fabricated from YBCO by the top-seed-melt-growth method were tested at 10 and 12 mm gaps. The experimental results demonstrated that permanent magnet arrays configurations produced higher levitation forces, with a maximum of 100 N at working gap of 10 mm. High-temperature superconductors bulks, in contrast, generated lower levitation forces (maximum 17 N at 10 mm) due to limited trapped flux (∼0.25 T) but showed the advantage of substantially reduced drag forces (3.5 N at 10 mm). A lift-to-drag ratio analysis confirmed the trade-off between force generation and energy losses in permanent magnet arrays systems, while highlighting the efficiency potential of high-temperature superconductors-based levitation. The findings of this study provide valuable insights for the engineering development of high-temperature superconductors-based Maglev technologies, emphasizing their potential importance in future transportation systems.

This work presents design and development of a modular high-speed electrodynamic levitation (EDL) test system that integrates advanced magnetic field configurations and real-time control capabilities at high operational speeds. The system comprises a rotating aluminium rail and interchangeable magnetic field sources, including permanent magnet array (PMA) and high-temperature superconducting (HTS) bulk, allowing for a variety of experimental configurations. The initial experimental results focused on testing the system through PMA–aluminium rail and HTS–aluminium rail configurations. A key innovation of this system is its modular structure, which allows for easy replacement and reconfiguration of magnetic components and rail geometries. The adaptability of the system enables a thorough investigation of how different magnetic field sources influence magnetic force and dynamic stability at high speeds. Furthermore, the system is fully integrated with a programmable logic controller (PLC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) interface, enabling precise real-time monitoring, synchronized control and automatic data acquisition. Experimental results demonstrate the system's capability to measure vertical displacement variations and force fluctuations at different speeds, with resonance effects identified around 145 km/h. The levitation forces of 99 N were measured at a gap of 10 mm, with the PMA at a maximum speed of 283 km/h above an aluminium rail, while it was measured as 16 N with HTS at a vertical gap of 9 mm. This flexible test platform provides a critical foundation for determining the force parameters of the real-scale EDL Maglev technologies and advancing their practical application potential in high-speed transportation.

We aimed to enhance the magnetic force efficiency of Maglev systems without increasing total weight. For this aim, we divided YBCO bulks into three slices horizontally to utilize the YBCO-permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) interaction surface as much as possible. We used whole YBCO above PMGs with different magnetic pole directions (PMG-A and PMG-B) in two lying positions of transversal and longitudinal and investigated levitation and guidance force performances. It is determined that levitation and guidance forces by using YBCO in transversal lying mode are bigger compared to the longitudinal mode. For sliced YBCO, the maximum levitation force increased by 69% and 78%, while the guidance force enhancements are determined as 212% and 91%, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-A and PMG-B, respectively. The levitation and guidance force density with respect to the total mass of unit a set of slices YBCO increased by 92% and 106%, respectively, compared to the whole YBCO above PMG-B in transversal mode. Since the higher levitation force and the lower total weight of the onboard unit are important parameters in point of the energy efficiency in Maglev and other levitation applications, the result of this study supplies useful data for the engineers and industrial partners.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ2Extended 2-D Magnetic Field Modeling of Linear Motor to Investigate the Magnetic Force Parameters of High-Speed Superconducting Maglev
Ozturk, Ufuk Kemal; Abdioglu, Murat; Ozkat, Erkan Caner; Mollahasanoglu, Hakki
A 2-D numerical finite-element model of a linear synchronous motor (LSM) is extended based on the magnetic field and moving mesh properties to investigate the magnetic flux and magnetic force characteristics of the high-speed electromagnetic levitation Maglev system, by using high-temperature superconductor (HTS) coils rather than lower current-carrying copper coils on the onboard unit and permanent magnets (PMs) on the ground. In this 2-D LSM model, the transient time-dependent solver is used to obtain the magnetic flux densities. Both the propulsion and levitation forces increased with increasing supercurrent Jc0 values indicating the advantage of using the superconducting windings in PM-LSM of Maglev vehicles as compared with the copper wires. It was also determined that, although the propulsion force is obtained on a comparable level with the studies in the literature, the lower levitation force issue than the electrodynamic suspension (EDS), despite the better propulsion to levitation force ratio, can be overcome by using the high flux trapping capacity bulk HTSs on the onboard unit together with the superconducting coils. The determined higher propulsion force in this PM-LSM Maglev model indicates that the Maglev vehicle can reach higher velocities in a short distance, and thus, this vehicle can be effectively used in short-distance travels in addition to the long-distance transportation. On the other hand, since the EDS system to be accelerated in a certain time interval via conventional wheels to achieve sufficient levitation, PM-LSM system can be integrated into the EDS Maglev system to ensure higher acceleration in a short time interval in addition to the higher levitation and propulsion force performances.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2020Scopus SJRQ2Magnetic force and stiffness performances of Maglev system based on multi–surface arrangements with three-seeded bulk YBaCuO superconductors
Ozturk, K.; Abdioglu, M.; Karaahmet, Z.
We have designed a multi–surface HTS (high temperature superconductor with three seeded bulk YBaCuO) Maglev system by increasing the YBaCuO number while decreasing the PM number in HTS–PMG system to enhance the loading capacity and stability of the superconducting Maglev system while reducing the fabrication cost. By this study, a detailed investigation on the magnetic levitation force, guidance force, magnetic stiffness and cost analysis of the multi–surface HTS Maglev system has been carried out for the first time. In this study, it is determined that the multi–surface YBaCuO–PMG arrangements are superior to the single–surface arrangements with respect to the loading capacity and especially the movement stability of Maglev systems together. Additionally, it is seen that the using of the multi–surface YBaCuO–PMG arrangement reduces the fabrication cost of the Maglev systems as 42.0% for 1000 km magnetic rail while increasing of the levitation force efficiency as 43.4% and this emphasizes the advantage of multi–surface arrangements to the classical single–surface ones. The obtained results can contribute to the researchers working on Maglev and have a capability to increase the usage potential of Maglev systems in commercial applications because of both the loading capacity and stability of Maglev systems can be enhanced together with reducing the fabrication cost without any loss in levitation performance.

- MakaleYalnız künye2018Scopus SJRQ2Levitation and guidance force relaxations of the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCO superconductors
Abdioglu, M.; Ozturk, K.; Kabaer, M.; Ekici, M.
The stable levitation and guidance forces at higher force levels are important parameters for technological applicability of high temperature superconductors (HTSs) in Maglev and Flywheel energy storage systems. In this study, we have investigated the levitation and guidance force relaxation of both the single-seeded and multi-seeded YBCOs for different (HTS)−permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements in different cooling heights (CH). The measured saturated force values of Halbach PMG arrangements are bigger than the maximum force values of other PMGs. It is determined that the normalized magnetic levitation force (MLF) and normalized guidance force (GF) relaxation rate values decrease while the relaxation rates increase with increasing magnetic pole number and the effective external magnetic field area for both the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCO. Also it can be said that the force stability at the higher force value of Halbach PMG arrangement indicates that the relaxation quality of Halbach PMG is better than that of the others. Additionally, it can be said that both the MLF and GF relaxation qualities of the multi−seeded YBCOs are better than that of the single−seeded ones. This magnetic force and relaxation results of the single−seeded and multi−seeded YBCOs are useful to optimize the loading capacity and lateral reliability of HTS Maglev and similar magnetic bearing systems.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2017Scopus SJRQ3Lateral Position Effect of Auxiliary Permanent Magnets on the Magnetic Force Properties of Cylindrical YBCO
Abdioglu, M.; Kabaer, M.; Ozturk, K.; Erdem, O.; Celik, S.
The magnetic levitation force (MLF) and the guidance force (GF) should be improved for loading capacity and stability of Maglev systems, respectively. Although there are some ways to increase these properties, using of auxiliary onboard permanent magnets (PMs) can be considered as the most efficient one. The auxiliary PMs increase the MLF significantly but, at the same time, decrease the GF. We have searched a solution to overcome this problem in this study. Firstly, we have determined the optimum vertical positions of the auxiliary PMs and then we have investigated the vertical levitation force and lateral guidance force of hybrid Maglev system depending on lateral position of auxiliary PMs in different cooling heights (CHs). A cylindrical YBCO superconductor, fabricated by a top seeding method with the diameter of 45 mm and the height of 15 mm, was used as a high-temperature superconductor (HTS). The maximum increment rate in MLF and the minimum decrement rate in GF were observed as 277 and 54 %, respectively. The increment in MLF was obtained five times more than the decrement in GF, and this reality points out that the results of this study can be useful for improving the loading capacity and thus enhancing the practical applicability of Maglev systems.

Ozturk, K.; Sahin, E.; Abdioglu, M.; Kabaer, M.; Celik, S.; Yanmaz, E.; Kucukomeroglu, T.
Abstract It is crucial to improve the magnetic levitation, guidance and stiffness performances of the HTS Maglev systems for real-scale applications. In this study, the magnetic levitation force, guidance force and magnetic stiffness values were determined for single and multi-seeded YBCOs on different PMGs in ZFC regime and different cooling heights (CHs) after the magnetic flux distributions simulation of the using PMGs. Implemented study showed that the additional downward PMs make an enhancing contribution on the magnetic levitation force, guidance force and magnetic stiffness of both single and multi-seeded YBCOs. It was also determined that both the force and stiffness ratios of multi-seeded YBCO to single-seeded YBCO increase with increasing CH, indicating that the multi-seeded YBCO has much more interaction domain than single-seeded at higher gaps. It is considered that the results obtained in this study are very useful in technological applications of Maglev and bearing systems, because there is no detailed study on the magnetic stiffness, levitation and guidance force comparison to clarify electromagnetic behavior of single and multi-seeded YBCOs for different HTS-PMG arrangements.

- MakaleAçık Erişim2015Scopus SJRQ1Levitation and guidance force efficiencies of bulk YBCO for different permanent magnetic guideways
Abdioglu, M.; Ozturk, K.; Gedikli, H.; Ekici, M.; Cansiz, A.
The development of superconductor Maglev systems depends on various disciplinary studies due to the inherent composition of available technologies. Because the fabrication cost is very effective on the Maglev, the requirement of the efficiency improvement focuses the researchers on the design considerations. In this study, the guidance force, the magnetic levitation force (MLF) and magnetic stiffness of different permanent magnetic guideway (PMG) arrangements were investigated in different cooling heights (CH) to enhance the efficiency of Maglev system. The single domain cylindrical bulk YBCO superconductors fabricated by top seeding method with the diameter of 45 mm and the height of 15 mm were used as HTS. Magnetic field distributions of the PMGs were calculated by finite element method to determine optimum HTS-PMG arrangements. We have used auxiliary onboard permanent magnets with YBCOs to improve the MLF of three pole Halbach PMG arrangements. It is seen that the efficiency of Maglev systems can be improved by using suitable HTS-PMG arrangements. In this study cost efficiency of the integrated levitation and guidance force ((Fz)max(Fx)max/(SPMG ∗ Cost)) was also determined. It is inferred from this study that the cooling height and PMG-HTS arrangement are key parameters for guidance force, levitation force, magnetic stiffness and efficiency of Maglev systems. It is believed that this study will supply useful references for practical application of HTS Maglev systems.
