Optimization of mechanochemical surface modification parameters on planetary mill using an I-optimal experimental design

    Özdemir, Akın; Uçurum, Metin

Several micro-particle-size additives and filler minerals are added to many industrial products, especially plastic, in order to reduce cost and improve mechanical properties and appearance. Also, grinding and surface modification are two fundamental properties of the filler minerals used in plastic products. Notably, Bayburt stone (BS) used as a natural raw material from Bayburt, Türkiye contains 76% SiO2 and 15% Al2O3. In this paper, the hydrophilic surface structure of micronized Bayburt stone (MBS) was made hydrophobe by mechanochemical surface modification using calcium stearate [Ca(C17H35COO)2] in a laboratory-type planetary mill. Next, the optimum conditions of the surface modification design factors, which are (1) ball filling ratio = 30.53%, (2) powder filling ratio = 10.43%, (3) mill speed = 475.91 rpm, (4) chemical dosage = 1.99% of powder, and (5) modification time = 4.83 min., were obtained using the proposed I-optimal design-focused optimization model when predicting the model parameters. In addition, a coated micronized Bayburt stone (CMBS) product with an active ratio (AR) of 99.90% and d10, d50, and d90 values of 1.32 μm, 3.48 μm and 9.55 μm were achieved. Finally, particle size distribution (PSD), thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analyzer (TG-DTA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), electron dispersive spectrum (EDS), and contact angle analyses were performed on the CMBS product.

DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF HISTORICAL BAYBURT GRAND MOSQUE

Yurdakul, Muhammet; Yilmaz, Fatih; Artar, Musa

In this study, the locations of the damages that would occur when a historical building was exposed to different earthquakes were determined. The selected building is Bayburt Ulu Mosque located in the city center of Bayburt and it was built by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan II. Gıyaseddin. This selected historical building is modelled according to the macro modelling technique in the SAP2000 program using the finite element method. Modules of elasticity, poisson's ratio and weight per unit of volume of Bayburt Stone which is used in the mosque are determined by the experiment. Also, the properties of the ground on which the building was built are determined. As earthquake records which recorded on similar grounds, components of DZC180 and DZC270 of 17 August 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, components BOL000 and BOL090 of 12 November 1999 Düzce earthquake and components of ERZE-EW and ERZE-NS of 13 March 1999 Erzincan earthquake are used. In the results of the dynamic analysis made, quantities and locations of the strains that can occur in the historic mosque are determined.

Effect of the polynaphtalene sulfonate based superplasticizer on mechanical and physical properties of blended cement replaced with Bayburt Stone at different fineness

    Tekin, Ilker; Tekin, Duygu

In this study, grinded Bayburt Stone has pozzolanic property with 45 mu m and 125 mu m fineness was replaced with PC 42.5R (CEM-I) type cement at ratio of 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% by weight. The aim of this study was made up in two phase, one of them was to investigate the effects of Bayburt Stone waste contain zeolite with different fineness on physical and mechanical properties of composite cements and the other one was to investigate behavior of same superplasticizer belong to two different company. Standard consistency, setting time and volume expansion tests are performed on the cement pastes and compression strength and flow tests are performed on the cement mortars. Mortar specimens are kept in standard curing for 28 days, than compressive strength test are performed at the ages of 2, 7 and 28 days. As a result, changes in specific surface area depending on the particle size distribution of mineral additives makes significant different on the physical, mechanical and rheological properties of cement mortars. In this study, it was determined that same type of superplasticizers which had different companies could be used in blended cement replaced with Bayburt stone.

USAGE OF BAYBURT STONE IN ROAD INFRASTRUCTURES AS A IMPROVEMENT MATERIAL

Kamiloglu, Hakan Alper; Yurdagül, Erman; Tekin, Ilker; Cokorilo, O

Subgrade is one of the most important factor which affects the operating time of highways. Subgrade of highways which are a part of freight transportation network exposes to more pressure. Therefore, stabilization of subgrades becomes more important for these highways. Usage of sustainable and eco friendly resources produce economic and effective solutions for stabilization of highways. BS can be a good example of the solution which are mined in Bayburt city, the north-east of Turkey. Bayburt Stone (BS) is Eocene age and consist of zeolite minerals. Because of containing high value of amorphous silica, tuffic Bayburt stones have pozzolanic activity. Therefore, the stones have binding characteristics when they mix in lime. In this study, It is intended to show that BS waste which obtained from the stone quarries during the stone processing, can be used as a stabilizing material in subbase layers of highways. Within the scope of the study lime and lime - BS mixtures were used to improve clayey subbase layers. In the experimental studies, different amount of 0.2-80 mu m diameter BS and lime mixtures were used and improvement results of lime, lime - BS mixtures were compared. The obtained stabilization materials were tested for clayey soils. In this context nonconfined compression test, shear box, XRD, XRF and Particle Sizer tests, standard compaction and soil classification tests (Liquid-Plastic Limit Test, Sieve Analysis, Hydrometer Analysis) were performed. As a result of study it was observe that the strength of samples which obtained from lime-BS increased remarkably and it's possible to make compaction with lower compaction energies.
