ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate internet usage habitsand possible internet addiction and the cyberbullying-victimization levels of adolescents who werefound to engage in self-destructive behaviors.Material and MethodsThis was a case-control study. This study includeda total of 206 adolescents between 14 and 18 yearsand they were examined under two groups as ‘self-destructive adolescents’ (n= 103) and ‘Control’ (n=103). The Self-Harm Behavior Questionnaire (SHBQ)was administered to 14- to 18-year-old adolescentsadmitted to our outpatient clinic. Then The InternetUsage Form (IUF), Internet Addiction Inventory (IAI),and Cyber Victim and Bullying Scale (CVBS) wereadministered to both groups.ResultsThe case group was found to use significantly moresocial networking sites, chatrooms, shopping websites, and instant messaging sites. The case group wasdetermined to use the internet significantly more toestablish communication and to access the internetsignificantly more every day. When the total scoresand subscale scores of CVBS of the groups wereexamined, the case group was determined to havesignificantly higher scores. The case group was foundto be significantly more possible internet addicts andto display significantly more risky internet behaviors.ConclusionsThe self-destructive adolescents in our study whouse the internet in risky ways and are at risk for internetaddiction show that this group is vulnerable tothe dangers of the virtual world. Taking this into consideration, examining the internet usage habits of self-destructive adolescents who are assessed in AdolescentMental Health Clinics would be a preventiveapproach.

Problematic internet use in university students: the predictive stenght of relationalinterdependent self-construal and impulsivity

    Eroğlu, Yüksel

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among relational-interdependent self-construal, impulsivity, and problematic internet use. This research was carried out with 327 university students who were selected via appropriate sampling. Of the participants, 155 (47.40 %) were female and 172 (52.60 %) were male. The mean of the participants’ ages was 19.76±1.68, ranging from 17 to 28 years. Data were gathered using Relational-Interdependent Self-Construal Scale, Brief Self-Control Scale, and Problematic Internet Use Scale. The relationships among impulsivity, relationalinterdependent self-construal, and the dimensions of problematic internet use were investigated Pearson Correlation Analysis. The predictive effect of impulsivity and relational-interdependent selfconstrual on problematic internet use was examined by structural equation modelling. Data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18 and LISREL 8.54. The results of the Pearson Correlational Analysis indicated that there were positive relationships between impulsivity and the subscales of problematic internet use (negative consequences of internet, social benefit/social comfort, and excessive usage). On the other hand, it was found that there were no significant relationships between relational-interdependent self-construal and dimensions of problematic internet use. The results of structural equation modelling demonstrated that problematic internet use was predicted positively by impulsivity and negatively by relational-interdependent self-construal. According to results of structural equation modelling, impulsivity and relational-interdependent self-construal altogether accounted for 31 % of the variance in problematic internet use. Findings from this study were discussed considering theoretical framework

The Investigation Relationships Among Contingencies of Self-Worth, Risky Internet Behaviors and Cyberbullying/Cybervictimization

    Eroğlu, Yüksel; Güler, Neşe

The aim of this study was to examine relationships among risky internet behaviors, internal and external contingencies of self-worth, and cyberbullying and cybervictimization. 505 undergradute students from different departments of University of Sakarya participated in this study. The Sociodemographic Form, the Contingencies of Self-Worth Scale, the Risky Internet Behaviors Questionnaire, and the Revised Cyberbullying Inventory were applied to participants. The effect of risky internet behaviors, internal and external contingencies of self-worth on cyberbullying and cybervictimization were investigated via structural equation modelling. In structural equation modelling, internal contingencies of self-worth was generated using virtue and family support. External contingencies of self-worth derived from academic competency, approval, and competition. Also Pearson correlation coefficients were utilized to investigate relationships among contingencies of selfworth, risky internet behaviors, cyberbullying and victimization. The goodness of fit indices (?2/sd= 2.80, p=.000 RMSEA=.06, % 90 RMSEA CI= .055-.064, CFI=.92, TLI= .91, RMR=.06 and SRMR=.06) of model was well fit. According to path analysis, cyberbullying and cybervictimization were predicted positively by risky internet behavior and external contingencies of self-worth and negatively by internal contingencies of self-worth. The structural model explained 42 % variances of cyberbullying/cybervictimization. These results were discussed in the light of the literature.
