Background: Adults with diabetes encounter various challenges related to managing their condition. In this study, we explored the experiences of adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus with low socioeconomic status in Türkiye. Methods: This study was conducted as a phenomenological qualitative research. The purposive sampling method was used to select adults with type 2 diabetes. Data saturation was achieved with 20 patients. The data were collected through a demographic information form and a semi-structured questionnaire. The participants were interviewed by phone. The interviews were conducted in a quiet environment where the participants could respond comfortably. During the data analysis process, the content analysis approach suggested by Graneheim and Lundman (2004) was used. This method involves identifying meaningful units within the text, coding these units, and developing sub-themes and main themes. The MAXQDA 20 software was used for data management. Results: The participants were between 41 and 71 years old. Four main themes and ten subthemes were identified in the analysis. Themes: The identified themes included difficulties with dietary management of diabetes, individual difficulties, difficulties with self-management in diabetes, and coping strategies. According to Theme 1, it was observed that the participants experienced difficulties in managing nutrition in diabetes due to the economic aspect of diet and the inability to adapt to the diet. According to Theme 2, it was observed that the participants faced physical, psychological, and social difficulties. According to Theme 3, it was observed that the participants faced difficulties related to diabetes self-management, including blood glucose monitoring, insulin injection administration, and maintaining glycemic control.” According to Theme 4, it was observed that the participants attempted to cope with diabetes-related difficulties through healthy lifestyle habits and family support. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that adults with type 2 diabetes in low socioeconomic status face challenges related to biopsychosocial factors, nutrition, and diabetes self-management. However, these individuals managed their difficulties by adopting healthy lifestyle behaviors and relying on family support. The challenges faced by adults with diabetes may be alleviated through awareness training on dietary management and glycemic control.

Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Çetinkaya Özdemir, Serap; Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Kurt, Fatma
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of sociodemographic factors and polypharmacy on loneliness and social isolation in older adults. This cross-sectional study included 370 older adults with and without polypharmacy. The data were gathered via the Personal Information Form, Loneliness Scale for Elderly, and Lubben Social Network Scale-Revised. A multivariate ANOVA (MANOVA) was conducted to assess the impact of independent variables on the combined dependent variables. Loneliness and social isolation were found higher in older adults with polypharmacy. In addition, loneliness and social isolation are more common in women, individuals with low educational attainment, single individuals, individuals with low income, individuals living in rural areas, individuals with poor family relationships, individuals not living with their families and individuals with chronic diseases. It is thought that the findings of this study will be guiding for all health professionals working in the field of elderly health in interventions to be planned for the elderly population.

Çetinkaya Özdemir, Serap; Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Ziyai, Nasibe Yağmur; Çakir, Emine
Background: Two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 occurred in the Turkish province of Kahramanmaraş in 2023. The earthquakes resulted in serious losses of life and property in 11 provinces, and the injured were transferred to other provinces for treatment and care. To date, no studies on the experiences of intensive care nurses providing care to earthquake victims after the Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence have been identified. Aim: The aim of the present study is to explore the experiences of intensive care nurses providing care to earthquake victims who were transferred to other provinces. Study Design: A qualitative descriptive research design with conventional content analysis was used. Snowball sampling was used in the selection of intensive care nurses. Data saturation was achieved with 20 nurses. In-depth interviews were conducted with the participants through phone between March 8 and March 15, 2023. MAXQDA 20 software was used for data analysis. The COREQ checklist was used to guide the reporting of the study. Results: Twenty nurses were recruited. Four themes emerged from the data: challenges in caregiving processes; psychological challenges; ethical situations; urgent need for training and support. Conclusions: After the Kahramanmaraş earthquake sequence, described by some as the disaster of the century, nurses encountered patients with unique needs that they had never encountered before and tried to cope with the constantly changing health conditions. For this reason, they were affected psychologically and experienced challenges in caregiving processes. Relevance to Clinical Practice: Conducting comprehensive training for diseases common among earthquake victims, developing new protocols for providing care to earthquake victims, developing more action plans for nurses, and psychologically supporting intensive care nurses would facilitate the caregiving processes.

The aim of this study was to develop the Diabulimia Knowledge Level Scale. The nurses voluntarily participated in the research (n = 384). The Diabulimia Knowledge Level Scale consists of 19 items and four factors. The four factors that make up the scale according to the results of Exploratory Factor Analysis explain 68.53 % of the total variance. The total Cronbach alpha coefficient of the scale was found to be 0.92. The Diabulimia Knowledge Level Scale is the first scale developed to determine the level of diabulimia knowledge among nurses. The scale is valid and reliable.

- MakaleYalnız künye2023Effect of Alexithymia Severity on Attitudes Toward Hypertension Prevention in Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study
Çetinkaya Özdemir, Serap; Semerci, Vahide; Metin, Tuba
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of alexithymia severity on attitudes toward hypertension prevention in adults. In the literature, the effects of alexithymia severity on attitudes toward hypertension prevention in adults have not been clearly elucidated. However, it has been reported that alexithymia is a possible risk factor for various medical conditions and may increase predisposition to diseases. This cross-sectional study included 358 adult individuals. Study data were collected with a personal information form, the Toronto Alexithymia Scale, and the Attitudes Toward Prevention of Hypertension Scale. The data was collected between December 12, 2022, and March 10, 2023. Relationships were analyzed by multiple linear regression. Findings were reported according to the STROBE guidelines. A weak negative correlation was found between the total scores of the Toronto Alexithymia Scale and Attitudes Toward Prevention of Hypertension Scale. The variables of educational status, smoking, having a family member with hypertension, and alexithymia were statistically significant predictors of attitudes toward hypertension prevention. It was further determined that these variables explained 7.6% of the variance in attitudes toward hypertension prevention. Alexithymia severity in adults affects their attitudes toward hypertension prevention. Determining the severity of alexithymia in adults may assist health professionals in implementing initiatives to improve the condition of alexithymia. In addition, new positive behaviors can be developed to prevent hypertension in adults.
