Development and Validation of the Self-Regulated Teaching Scale (SRTS)

    Akeren, İhsan

Quality education depends on the interaction among the student, the teacher, and the curriculum. Within this process, teachers play a central role in planning instruction, implementing teaching, and evaluating learning. In this context, self-regulated teaching refers to the deliberate regulation of teaching practices across the planning, implementation, and evaluation phases. This study aimed to develop and validate a scale measuring teachers’ self-regulated teaching skills on the basis of Zimmerman’s Self-Regulated Learning Model (Z’SRLM). An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed. Qualitative data from three focus group discussions with 12 teachers were used to generate the item pool, yielding three dimensions: planning, implementation, and evaluation. After expert review and a clarity check with 75 teachers, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted with 226 teachers and produced a 17-item, three-factor structure. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with an independent sample of 394 teachers supported the final modified three-factor model (χ²/df = 1.374, CFI = .962, TLI = .955, IFI = .963, RMSEA = .031, SRMR = .038). The correlated three-factor and second-order representations yielded equivalent global fit, and additional model-based indices indicated that the total score retained meaningful psychometric value as a complementary global indicator, although the scale was interpreted primarily at the subdimension level. Criterion-related validity was examined with 207 teachers using the Classroom Management Skills Scale (CMSS), and the correlations were positive and statistically significant (r = .438-.751, p < .001). Internal consistency coefficients ranged from acceptable to high across subdimensions, model-based indices supported cautious interpretation of the total score, and test-retest findings indicated acceptable temporal stability. Overall, the findings support the validity and reliability of the Self-Regulated Teaching Scale for use in research on teachers’ instructional practices.

The Problems That Social Studies Teachers Encounter in Teaching Process

    Göksu, Meral Metin; Tasyürek, Zeynep

This study, which aims to determine the problems experienced by Social Studies teachers in the teaching process, was carried out with 14 Social Studies teachers working at middle schools at Kars city center. The study adopted qualitative research method in which researcher actively participates in collecting data and observing in a realistic and holistic perspective, and perceptions and events are expressed in an unwritten or oral form. The data were gathered with semi-structured interview form which was created to provide a thorough information about the research topic. Explanatory and inferential codes were used to analyze the qualitative data and to find out the correlations. The interview analysis were separately coded by two different experts in order to ensure reliability. When looking at the results of what are the student-related problems, which are one of the sub-findings in the research, social studies teachers stated that they experienced problems of readiness, motivation and distraction. Some of the teachers also stated that they had problems with lack of experience, not being able to follow developments and renewing themselves. Teachers also stated that they experienced some management-related problems such as material supply, improving the physical conditions of the school and the classroom.Other problems experienced by teachers are insufficient class hours and parents' indifference. Teachers suggest to diminish course content in course books, to increase the number of lessons and parents’ caring so as to solve the issues surrounding the mentioned above.

Trends of Research on Self-Efficiency in the field of Turkish Education

    Maden, Sedat; Özgen, Akif

In this study, it is aimed to evaluate the articles and theses prepared on self-efficacy in the fields of Turkish education and teaching Turkish as a foreign language from different aspects and to reveal their general tendencies. The research is limited to articles and theses on self-efficacy published between 2009-2022 in Turkey. For the sample, searches were made on the databases of YÖK National Thesis Center, TR Index, Google Scholar, ResearchGate and DergiPark. As a result of these scans, a total of 127 academic studies on self-efficacy were identified. The identified academic studies consist of 34 postgraduate theses (master's-doctorate) and 93 articles. Qualitative research method was used in the research. The data of the research was collected through document analysis, and the content analysis method was used in the analysis of the data. As a result of the examinations, it has been determined that the master's theses are more than the doctoral theses. When the distribution of graduate theses according to universities is examined, Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University took the first place. It has been concluded that the most frequently used research method is the quantitative research method.
