Hayat Bilgisi Doktora Tez Özetlerinin Okunabilirliği Üzerine Bir Değerlendirme

    Ari, Sinan

Examining the Reading Fluency, Reading Comprehension, and Retelling Skills of Primary School Students

    Kodan, Hülya

This study investigates the reading fluency, reading comprehension, and retelling skills of 135 typically developing primary school students in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. It aims to evaluate their current levels and examine the relationships among these skills. The study was conducted using a relational survey design, which is one of the quantitative research methods. Data for the study were collected through narrative texts, reading comprehension, and retelling forms appropriate for each grade level. Audio recordings were taken to determine the students' reading fluency and retelling levels, while their reading comprehension levels were assessed in written form. Statistical software was used for data analysis. The results indicated that a significant portion of the students demonstrated instructional-level reading fluency, reading comprehension, and retelling skills. Moreover, a positive and significant relationship was found between the students' reading fluency and their reading comprehension and retelling skills. Based on these results, the retelling technique was used as an assessment tool in this study. However, it is recommended that it be employed as a teaching tool to develop students' retelling skills. Additionally, various methods and techniques can be utilized to improve students' reading fluency and retelling skills.

Instruments used in the research included the Demographic Information Form, Academic Life Satisfaction Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Scale, and Two-Dimensional Self-Esteem Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis, correlation analysis, and the independent samples t test analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Factor analysis results confirmed the scale had a two-factor structure. Within the scope of criterion-related validity for the Academic Life Satisfaction Scale, positive significant correlations were detected between academic life satisfaction and life satisfaction, positive affect, self-esteem and academic achievement, while a negative significant correlation was identified between academic life satisfaction and negative affect among university students. In light of the obtained findings, the Academic Life Satisfaction Scale is a valid and reliable instrument to measure academic life satisfaction among Turkish university students.

Öztürk, Mesut; Akkan, Yaşar; Kaplan, Abdullah

The fact that the gifted students perform their problem-solving activities by using their metacognitive skills will reinforce their ability to correlate among the mathematical concepts as well as developing their understanding and learning mathematics in depth. For this reason, the purpose of this study is to determine and compare the metacognitive skills performed by 6th-8th grade gifted students at the time of their problem-solving process. The case study, one of the qualitative research models, has been used in this study. The data in this study conducted with nine gifted secondary school students were collected by using a think- aloud protocol (interview forms) along with the observation forms. A thematic analysis was performed by making use of the studies in the literature. It was ascertained as the result of the study that the gifted students at different learning levels has exhibited metacognitive skills in all of the problem-solving steps and that the number of the metacognitive skills performed during the problem- solving processes generally increased as the learning levels of the students developed. Moreover, it was also determined that the students, in all of the problem-solving steps, generally felt confident, reviewed their targets and self-evaluated/self-checked at every step of this process.
