Effects of Recycled Asphalt Material and Natural Pozzolan as Additives of Hot-Mix Asphalt: A Field Study

    Yilmaz, Bahadır; Şentürk, Mehmet Akif

Using existing resources more efficiently and effectively becomes important currently. The question of how to make the best use of resources arises in the choice between constructing new roads and improving deteriorated existing roads. It is also important to reduce the amount of consumption and cost of materials. This has emerged the need to use waste materials by recycling and reusing. In this study, a new hot-mix asphalt (HMA) mixture was developed using recycled asphalt pavement (RAP), which was obtained by excavating the surface of a road at the end of its service life, together with a waste material namely natural pozzolan (NP). The final obtained mixture was used as a wear layer on an active highway. Core specimens were extracted from the paved layer for one year and subjected to dynamic and mechanical laboratory tests. Adding NP improved the resistance of the HMA mixture under heavy seasonal effects and traffic loads. In addition, NP increased the tensile strength, making the HMA mixture more resistant to deformation than control and RAP HMA mixtures. Dynamic creep test results showed that the control asphalt mixture had the most deformation and that the RAP mixture with NP had the least. According to the laboratory results, NP addition increased the stability value of the control mixture by 40%. Especially in cold seasons, the role of NP was more evident. In the performance tests that were applied on core samples taken from the field, ITS values for September increased by 98%, and the deformation values obtained as a result of the dynamic creep test decreased by 12%. In summary, adding NP to RAP HMA improves the performance of the pavement and the cost-effectiveness of the environmentally friendly use of RAP in HMA.

The effect of waste material generated during paper production on the rheological and structural features of asphalt binder

    Yilmaz, Bahadir; Ugurlu, Nuray

In this study, the performance properties of magnesium lignosulfonate, an organic waste material produced during paper production from wood, on asphalt binder were investigated. The modification was carried out by adding magnesium lignosulfonate (MLS) at 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% by weight to the asphalt with B50/70 penetration grade. The morphological structure, modification mechanism, and thermal decomposition temperatures of the modified asphalt binders formed by adding the MLS to the asphalt were determined by a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Thermogravimetry-Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTG), respectively. The physical and rheological properties of the material were determined by penetration, softening point, Rolling Thin Film Oven Test (RTFOT), Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR), and Rotational Viscometer (RV) experiments conducted in a laboratory. The experimental results showed that the organic-based waste additive increases the asphalt consistency, rutting, and short-term aging resistance, and decreases the temperature sensitivity.

Investigation of Reuse by Recycling Asphalt Pavements in Hot Mix Asphalt

Yilmaz, Bahadir; Oruç, Seref; Mazlum, Mehmet Salih

In many countries of the world, waste management becomes compulsive with activation of laws and agreements about waste control. By this purpose, it becomes necessary and imperative to use waste asphalt materials as raw material for the new asphalt pavement due to economic advantages of using old materials, decreasing of the raw material’s potential, and problems of researching new asphalt raw mines and increasing of the asphalt pavement cost. Within this scope, this work has started to a research of re-used old materials which are completed their economic life on the road in the hot bituminous mixes. In this work, recycling methods that are used in World and Turkey are analyzed at the beginning and the advantages of recycling are utilized. İstanbul region is chosen as the working area and materials are gained by the roads that completed their economic life in İstanbul. By these materials, new coverable mix materials had produced in different ratios such as10%,25% and40%. Marshall Experiment had used to these mixtures, intensity and void analyses are made and the results that obtained from experiments are compared with the pure materials and the core samplers

Azot (N), Kükürt (S) ve Bor İçerikli Organik Katkılarla Asfaltın Modifiye Edilerek Asfalt Kaplamaların Mekanik Özelliklerinin İyileştirilmesi

Oruç, Şeref; Yılmaz, Bahadır; Sancak, Kemal

In this study, a novel boron-containing organic additive, which is completely original, was chemically synthesised in the laboratory condition and its performance features on the asphalt were assessed. The structural characterisation of the synthesised organic additive was investigated using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetry (TG) analysis methods. The morphologic structure, modification mechanism and thermal degradation behaviours of modified asphalt binders formed by adding the additive to the asphalt were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), FT-IR and TG analysis. The physical and rheological properties were measured using dynamic shear rheometer (DSR), rolling thin film oven test (RTFOT), rotational viscometer (RV), pressure aging vessel (PAV), bending beam rheometer (BBR) and conventional binder experiments. Mechanical properties of mixtures prepared according to Marshall design were examined by the experiments of Marshall stability and flow, indirect tensile, moisture damage, indirect tensile strength, static creep, dynamic creep, indirect tensile fatigue, LCPC wheel tracking, and Nicholson stripping. The results indicate that the additive increased the asphalt’s consistence, rutting, aging resistance, flexibility, adhesion, loading spreading and fatigue life features and decreased temperature sensibility and cracking tendency at the low temperatures. Statistical analysis of the data obtained from experiments supports those findings, indicating that the best additive ratio to enhance the performance features of asphalt was 6%.

Improvement in performance properties of asphalt using a novel boron-containing additive

    Oruç, Şeref; Yılmaz, Bahadır

In current times, many additives are used to improve the performance characteristics of asphalt. In this study, a new additive that contains boron, given the short name of cyclic borate ester (CBE), was chemically synthesised in laboratory conditions. It was added to the asphalt binder as 1%, 2%, 4% and 6% ratios of asphalt by weight, and modified asphalt samples were produced. The effects of CBE on the conventional properties of asphalt binder (penetration, softening point, ductility, flash point, Fraass breaking point) were examined using a dynamic shear rheometer, rotational viscosity, a rolling thin film oven, a pressure aging vessel and bending beam rheometer test methods. Results showed that the use of CBE additive increased the hardness, softening point, viscosity, flash-point value and rutting resistance of asphalt binder and decreased temperature sensitivity. CBE also enhanced elastic responses (increased complex shear modulus and decreased phase angle), aging resistance and low-temperature cracking resistance and did not change the cohesion property.

Effect of boron-containing additives on rheological properties of asphalt binder

Oruç, Şeref; Yılmaz, Bahadır; Sancak, Kemal

In this study, four novel boron-containing additives were synthesised chemically in the laboratory. The modification was performed by adding the additives, respectively, into asphalt at a certain amount by weight at the same temperature and mixing conditions. The modification mechanism and microstructure of the blends were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy. The variation in modified samples in comparison to base asphalt was investigated by performing the penetration, softening point, dynamic shear rheometer, amplitude–frequency–temperature sweeps and rotational viscosity tests. It was observed that the additives increased the softening point, rutting resistance, elastic properties and viscosity of asphalt. The additive synthesised with triazole borate ester octanol-sulphuric acid catalysts gave the most enhancements, relative to base asphalt.
