REGULATORY EFFECT OF GENDER AND EDUCATION DEPARTMENT STATUS ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INCLUSIVE EDUCATION AWARENESS AND SELF-EFFICACY

    Taşyürek, Zeynep; Kodan, Hülya

Inclusive education is based on the idea that all individuals—regardless of individual characteristics and differences—should have access to education, a fundamental right granted to all. This study examines the relationship between pre-service teachers’ inclusive education awareness and self-efficacy and the impact of different variables that may affect this relationship. For this purpose, the Awareness Scale for Inclusive Education and the Teachers’ Self-Efficacy Perception of Inclusive Education Scale were used as data collection tools. The study was conducted through a correlational survey design to understand the relationship between pre-service teachers’ Awareness of Inclusive Education scores and Teacher’s Self-Efficacy Perception of Inclusive Education scores and determine the regulatory effect of gender and the departments in which the teachers studied on this relationship. The study sample included 360 pre-service teachers who completed the Special Education and Inclusion course. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0 and the Process Macro plugin. The results show a significant relationship between pre-service teachers’ awareness of inclusive education and self-efficacy perceptions. Results also indicate that while the regulatory effect of gender on the relationship between pre-service teachers’ inclusive education awareness and self-efficacy perceptions was not significant, the regulatory effect of the department they belonged to was substantial.

AN EXAMINATION OF EMOTIONAL AND CREATIVE LEVELS AMONG TERTIARY STUDENTS IN TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

    Çingöz, Yunus Emre; Mavibaş, Muhammet

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the effect of emotional states on creativity levels tertiary students in team and individual sports. The study further aimed to discern the various emotional states and creativity levels prevalent among athletes, contingent on different variables. The participants comprised 302 athletes, 162 males and 140 females, who were all registered students in the Faculty of Sports Sciences at Bayburt University. In order to gather demographic data, the researchers constructed a “Personal Information Form”. The “Sports Emotion Scale”, developed by Urfa and Aşçı (2019), was utilized to assess the emotional states of the athletes within their respective sports. To evaluate their creativity levels in sports, the “Creativity Scale for Athletes”, constructed by Güngör et al. (2020), was utilized. Data analysis incorporated frequency analysis for determining the participants' demographic attributes, and descriptive tests for establishing the mean scores of both emotional states and creativity levels in sports. The independent t-tests were used to compare emotional and creativity levels based on gender and sport type. One-way ANOVA tests were used to compare emotional and creativity levels based on educational level and years of sports experience. Post-hoc comparisons were facilitated using Tukey tests to identify specific group differences. Lastly, multiple linear regression analysis was applied to scrutinize the impact of emotional states on creativity levels in sports. The research findings indicate that athletes participating in team sports demonstrated higher levels of enthusiasm and happiness, as determined by the sub-dimensions of the Sports Emotion Scale, when compared to athletes participating in individual sports. In addition, it was noted that an increase in feelings of unhappiness among athletes corresponded to a decrease in their levels of sports creativity. Conversely, a surge in enthusiasm was associated with heightened creativity levels within sports.

Word familiarity effects in efl reading: an eye tracking study

    Dolgunsöz, Emrah

Do you know what happens in mind when we encounter a novel word while reading anewspaper, a paragraph or a short story? Via eye tracking technique, this study aimed togather clues about how our mind reacts to an unknown word while we read in anotherlanguage by examining word familiarity effects on eye movements during EFL reading. Aftera vocabulary test, eye movements of 60 EFL learners at intermediate level were recordedwhile they read identical sentence pairs including words with different length and frequency. The results showed that (1) total time spent on words and reanalysis times were predicted byvocabulary knowledge, (2) initial word processing was not predicted by vocabulary size (3)unfamiliar words attended more attention and required more cognitive effort than familiarwords, (4) familiar words are processed in similar time spans for English as L1 and L2 butunfamiliar words cause more cognitive load in EFL. The results were discussed incomparison to L1 eye movement research in reading and were evaluated regarding EFLreading in terms of noticing hypothesis, incidental vocabulary acquisition and EFL readinginstruction.

Measuring english language teacher candidates' intercultural sensitivity: a key element to foster intercultural communicative competence

    Köroğlu, Zeynep Çetin

A multicultural and global society makes intercultural communication an indispensable part of communication. As an affective dimension of intercultural communicative competence, intercultural sensitivity has drawn the attention of scholars throughout the past years. However, there is still a misperception about intercultural sensitivity with other cognitive, affective and behavioral domains of intercultural communication such as intercultural awareness, intercultural adroitness and intercultural communicative competence. Important scholars in the field define intercultural sensitive persons as those who are conscious in their interactions and accept interlocutors' ideas without judgment of their personal complexity. In this angle, English language teachers' sensitivity towards other cultures has significant meaning to make language learners better foreign language learners and speakers (Crawford, 2008). Thus, the current study aims to investigate English Language Teacher candidates' intercultural sensitivity level. In this study, ISS (intercultural sensitivity scale, Chen and Starosta, 2000) is used to measure the results of the 61 student teachers who participated in the study. Participants' intercultural sensitivity levels are analyzed in SPSS due to interaction engagement, respect for cultural differences, interaction confidence, enjoyment and attentiveness. The results show that English language teacher candidates enjoy interacting with people from other cultures and they are sensitive towards cultural differences and complexities
