Associations between preschool children’s perspective-taking skills and their perceived abilities and behavioral intentions toward peers with special educational needs

    Ari-Arat, Ceren; Tutkun, Cansu

The aim of this study was to examine the associations between preschool children’s perceived capabilities, perspective-taking skills, and behavioral intentions toward peers with special educational needs. The sample consisted of 193 preschool children aged 4 to 6 years, selected through convenience sampling from early childhood education centres in Bayburt, Türkiye. A quantitative cross-sectional design was employed. Data were collected using the Child Information Form, the Perceived Capabilities Scale, the Behavioral Intentions Scale, and the Child Perspective-Taking Test. Data collection was conducted in one-on-one sessions over two meetings per child, with an average duration of 18 min. Small but statistically significant positive associations were observed between children’s perceived capabilities and their behavioral intentions across the three peer conditions (r =.283-0.289, p <.01). Small associations were also observed between selected perspective-taking components and behavioral intentions in the bivariate analyses; however, none of the perspective-taking components remained significantly associated with behavioral intentions after the other variables were taken into account. Across the three regression models, perceived capabilities were the only variable that remained significantly associated with behavioral intentions (β = 0.268-0.289, p <.001). The regression models explained a modest proportion of the variance in behavioral intentions (R² = 0.093-0.106; adjusted R² = 0.074-0.087). Exploratory group comparisons indicated selective differences in perspective-taking according to reported experience with peers with SEN; however, these findings should be interpreted cautiously because experience was measured dichotomously and the direct-experience groups were highly unequal. Girls reported slightly higher behavioral intentions toward peers with physical disabilities than boys (t = 2.318, p =.022), whereas no significant age-related differences were observed.

Investigation of life satisfaction and spiritual well-being of living liver donors in Turkey

Gunes, Hüseyin; Bulbuloglu, Semra; Saritas, Serdar

Spiritual well-being may be among the most common feelings felt by living liver donors. The feeling that pushes an individual to good behavior may be spiritual well-being, and the feeling that emerges as a result of achieving goodness may be life satisfaction. In our study, we aimed to analyze the spiritual well-being and life satisfaction of living liver donors and to examine the relationship, if any, between spiritual well-being and life satisfaction. Our descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 306 living liver donors (n = 306). In the data collection process, we used a personal information form, the Spiritual Well-Being Scale, and the Satisfaction with Life Scale. In data analysis, we utilized descriptive statistical methods, one-way analysis of variance. Of all living liver donors participating in this study, 37.3% were aged 41–50 years, 73.5% were female, and 53.9% donated their liver to their spouse or child. The predictor variable of spiritual well-being was found to account for approximately 29% of the total variance in the predicted variable of life satisfaction. There was a positive and strong correlation between spiritual well-being and life satisfaction of living liver donors (p < 0.05). Spiritual well-being and life satisfaction of living liver donors are positively affected by each other. In order to provide more psychosocial support to these heroes who disregard their own health and try to save others’ lives, it is best practice to support their spiritual well-being, increase their life satisfaction and develop awareness about these two values. An investigation of cyberloafing behaviors in learners of Turkish as a foreign language

    Güngör, Haluk; Ustabulut, Mete Yusuf

Cyberloafing can be defined as using technological devices for extracurricular activities during the lesson. The misuse of technological tools and facilities in educational environments causes many learning problems. One of the most important behaviors that cause this problem is cyberloafing. The explorative and main aim of the current study is to examine the reasons behind the cyberloafing behaviors of those who learn Turkish as a foreign language in terms of various variables and explore the phenomenological point of view of participants. The research was carried out in accordance with the convergent parallel mixed method design. The “Cyberloafing Behaviors Scale” was employed to collect quantitative data from a total of 207 students learning Turkish in 5 different TÖMER (Teaching Turkish Center); in the process of qualitative data collection, open-ended questions formed by the researcher were used. For examining mean differences in terms of categorical variables t-test and separate ANOVAs were run. In ANOVAs, in order to minimize the possibility of error that may occur in the ANOVA test, type I error was controlled with Bonferroni correction. To determine predictors of cyberloafing behaviors of the study group multiple regression analysis was utilized. According to the findings of the current study, there was no significant difference between gender and time spent on social media and cyberloafing behavior; in the real-time updating dimension, it was determined that there was a significant difference between the B1 level and B2 and C1 levels. Having devices such as laptops stands out as the variable that predicts cyberloafing the most. It was also observed that cyberloafing behavior decreased as speaking skill increased. When the qualitative data was examined, the students stated that they were cyberloafing due to reasons such as messaging, sharing photos and videos because of boring lessons.
