Perceived burdensomeness and happiness in cohabiting older adults: The serial mediating roles of mental well-being and loneliness

Akeren, Zahide; Akeren, Ihsan; Kalyoncuo, Servet

Background Aging-related changes and increased dependence on family members may negatively affect older adults’ psychological well-being. Perceived burdensomeness refers to the belief that one is a burden on others and has been associated with lower happiness, reduced mental well-being, and greater loneliness. Among adults living with their families, mental well-being and loneliness may explain how perceived burdensomeness relates to happiness in later life. Purpose This study examined the associations between perceived burdensomeness and happiness among older adults living with their families and evaluated the serial mediating roles of mental well-being and loneliness. Methods This cross-sectional study included individuals aged ≥65 years residing with family members in a city in Turkey’s Eastern Black Sea region. Data were collected from 273 older adults; after preliminary screening, 7 cases were excluded, resulting in a final analytic sample of N = 266. Measures included the Geriatric Feelings of Burdensomeness Scale, WHO-5, the Happiness Scale, and the Loneliness Scale for the Elderly. Serial mediation was tested using a regression-based approach with bootstrap confidence intervals. Results Perceived burdensomeness was associated with lower mental well-being and higher loneliness. The total association between burdensomeness and happiness was negative (β=-0.467), and more than two-thirds of this association operated indirectly through mental well-being and loneliness. Conclusion and Implications Perceived burdensomeness was associated with lower happiness among older adults living with their families, primarily through reduced mental well-being and increased loneliness. In geriatric nursing and primary care, routinely assessing these psychosocial factors and implementing family-centered and social support-oriented interventions may help improve happiness.

Mind diet adherence associated with lower Zonulin levels in older Parkinson's patients

Esgin, Özge; Tokçaer Bora, Hatice Ayşe; Gülbahar, Özlem; Demirkesen, Özlem Cemile; Ataoğlu, Nigar Esra Erkoç; Söke, Fatih; Özçelik, Ayşe Özfer

Aim: This study investigates the association between adherence to the MIND diet and serum zonulin levels in older adults with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: Data were collected through structured survey forms and blood samples. The survey assessed general information, 24-hour food recalls, anthropometric measurements, the MIND diet adherence and physical activity levels. Zonulin levels were analysed from blood samples. Results: The study included 57 older adults with PD in stages 1–3 on the Hoehn & Yahr scale (29 women, 28 men; mean age 70.2 ± 4.6 years). Zonulin levels were negatively correlated with dietary total antioxidant capacity (p < 0.05). In adjusted analyses, higher adherence to the MIND diet was associated with lower zonulin levels (β = −0.25). Conclusions: These findings suggest a novel link between adherence to the MIND diet and reduced zonulin levels. MIND diet could have potential benefits for neurological function and intestinal barrier integrity.

The effect of sociodemographic characteristics and polypharmacy on loneliness and social isolation in community-dwelling older adults

Sönmez Sari, Ebru; Çetinkaya Özdemir, Serap; Semerci Çakmak, Vahide; Kurt, Fatma

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of sociodemographic factors and polypharmacy on loneliness and social isolation in older adults. This cross-sectional study included 370 older adults with and without polypharmacy. The data were gathered via the Personal Information Form, Loneliness Scale for Elderly, and Lubben Social Network Scale-Revised. A multivariate ANOVA (MANOVA) was conducted to assess the impact of independent variables on the combined dependent variables. Loneliness and social isolation were found higher in older adults with polypharmacy. In addition, loneliness and social isolation are more common in women, individuals with low educational attainment, single individuals, individuals with low income, individuals living in rural areas, individuals with poor family relationships, individuals not living with their families and individuals with chronic diseases. It is thought that the findings of this study will be guiding for all health professionals working in the field of elderly health in interventions to be planned for the elderly population.

The impact of surgical intervention on religious coping, psychological well-being, and pain levels in older adult patients: A quasi-experimental study

    Daştan, Buket; Kulakaç, Nurşen

Aim: This study aimed to determine the impact of surgical intervention on religious coping, psychological well-being, and pain levels in older adult patients. Method: The data of the study, which used a one-group pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design without a control group, was collected between July 1, 2023, - January 30, 2024. Data collection involved the use of a Personal Information Form, the Religious Coping Scale, the Psychological Well-Being Scale, and the Visual Analog Scale. Results: The results revealed a significant increase in psychological well-being and positive religious coping after surgical intervention compared to presurgical levels (p < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that male gender, younger age, enhanced psychological well-being, and positive religious coping were identified as factors contributing to a reduction in postsurgical pain levels. Conclusion: The study's results indicate that surgical intervention serves as a significant variable influencing psychological well-being and religious coping among older adult patients.
