The impact of ChatGPT-integrated reading activities on the reading attitudes and habits of middle school students

Kaplan, Kadir; Özen, Nesime Ertan; Özcan, Halil Ziya

This study examines the impact of the artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT on middle school students' attitudes and reading habits during a brief intervention. Twenty-six students from a middle school in Türkiye—13 in the experimental group and 13 in the control group—took part in an eight-session, four-week quasi-experimental study. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach. Data was gathered and analyzed using the Attitudes and Habits towards Reading Scale, the Digital Literacy Scale, and focus group interviews. Preliminary results indicate that students in the experimental group had better reading habits and attitudes than those in the control group. After the ChatGPT intervention was implemented, the experimental group's students showed a significant improvement in their positive attitudes toward reading. However, the experimental group also showed an unexpected increase in negative reading attitudes, warranting further investigation. Three primary themes, covering both the advantages and disadvantages of the application, were identified from the student interview data. These results highlight how artificial intelligence (AI) technologies present a potentially novel way to boost reading motivation in educational settings. However, to use these technologies effectively, educators and students must acquire more knowledge and skills. Longer-term studies with larger sample sizes are also required to validate these initial findings.

Evaluation of activity-based mathematics teaching to students with learning disabilities in out-of-school learning environments

    Filiz, Tunahan; Güneş, Gönül

This study aimed to support primary school students with learning difficulties in out-of-school learning environments with artistic or sportive activities. The case study method, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The activities prepared for students with learning difficulties were shaped by considering four learning areas (numbers, geometry, measurement, and data processing). Each learning area was associated with music, visual arts, sports, and drama methods, respectively. The prepared activities were implemented for four days between 16-19 April 2023, when schools were on holiday. The activities were applied to students in 20 lessons in five lessons of 40 minutes each day. The project's target group consisted of 24 students officially diagnosed with learning disabilities and attending the third and fourth grades of primary school. This study collected data from interviews, observation, document review, and curriculum-based evaluation methods. The content analysis method was used for data analysis. The results of the study show that activity-based mathematics teaching has a positive effect on student learning. Artistic or sportive activities can be added to school programs for students with learning difficulties to learn in real-life environments.

Multicultural education in Turkish social studies curriculum and textbooks

    Yılmaz, Sevda

Multicultural education is an educational approach that is guided by cultural components and is based on cultural diversity. Students are expected to gain skills and values in the education process with the social studies course, such as accepting cultural diversity, respecting human rights, and assessing different perspectives and ideas, all of which are crucial in multicultural education. From this perspective, it is clear that this notion of education is intertwined with the social studies course. Integrating a multicultural education approach into the social studies curriculum and textbooks is viewed as critical. This paper aims to determine the status of the multicultural education approach in both social studies curriculum and textbooks. The study employed the document analysis approach, which is one of the qualitative research methodologies. As data sources, the research used the 2018 social studies course curriculum as well as social studies textbooks for 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grade. The paper attempted to establish the status of how multicultural education is included in the curriculum and social studies textbooks. The results of the study demonstrate that the multicultural education approach is represented in the curriculum, that the multicultural education approach in textbook texts is consistent with acquisitions, but that the activities are lacking.
