The effect of augmented reality-enriched stories on altruistic sharing behavior

Kotaman, Hüseyin; Balcı, Aslı; Tutkun, Cansu; Bayram, Zeynep

This study aims to determine the effect of reading augmented reality (AR)-enriched stories related to sharing on children’s altruistic sharing behavior. In recent years, AR applications have been increasingly utilized in early childhood education to enhance engagement and motivation; however, there is limited knowledge about their impact on children’s social and moral development. Addressing this gap, the present study focuses on how interactive, immersive storytelling environments can foster prosocial behaviors, particularly altruistic sharing, in preschool children. A total of 300 children aged 4–6 from 21 kindergarten classrooms participated in the study. The classrooms were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a group that received an AR-enriched sharing storybook, a group that received a non-AR digital sharing storybook, and a group that received a digital storybook unrelated to sharing (control group). The sharing behavior of the participating children was measured before and after the story sessions using a standardized sticker-sharing protocol. Each child was read the story individually, according to their assigned group. The difference between children’s post-story and pre-story sharing behaviors was calculated, and the sharing differences among the three groups were compared using ANOVA. As a result, it was found that the children who listened to the AR-enriched story about sharing showed a significantly greater increase in sharing behavior compared to the other two groups. These findings highlight the potential of AR-supported storybooks as effective pedagogical tools for enhancing altruistic and prosocial behaviors in early childhood education.

The effect of virtual school tour on preschool children’s school adjustment

Kotaman, Hüseyin; Balci, Asli; Kilic, Zeynep Nur Aydin; Tutkun, Cansu

Starting school for the first time can be a challenging transition for young children and their families. This study combined quantitative and qualitative approaches to examine the impact of a virtual school tour on the school adjustment process of kindergarten students who are about to start school for the first time. The study included 18 kindergarten teachers and a total of 359 children, with 176 in the treatment group and 183 in the control group. Children in the treatment group viewed a 6–10 min interactive 360° virtual tour of their school before the school year began, while those in the control group did not receive any preparatory intervention. Children’s school adjustment was assessed three weeks after school entry using the School Adjustment Teacher Evaluation Scale, which measures school avoidance, school liking, cooperative participation, and self-directiveness. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test, and qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. Results showed that children in the treatment group demonstrated significantly lower school avoidance (U = 13266, p =.002, r =.164), higher school liking (U = 11221, p <.001, r =.284), and greater cooperative participation (U = 8541.5, p <.001, r =.860) than those in the control group, with no significant difference for self-directiveness. Qualitative findings supported these results, indicating that the virtual tour increased children’s familiarity with the school, reduced separation anxiety, and facilitated smoother communication between parents and teachers. Teachers reported that participating children entered school “as if it were already familiar,” adapted more quickly, and interacted more readily with peers and teachers. This study contributes to early childhood education by offering a scalable, low-cost, technology-based strategy for easing school transitions. Findings suggest that virtual school tours can be a practical tool for improving children’s early school experiences and enhancing family-school partnerships.

Integrating artificial intelligence into preservice teacher education: enhancing AI literacy and digital material design competency

    Gulen, Hilal Nur; Kucuk, Sevda

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed educational tools and practices. Integrating AI into instruction supports complex thinking, enriches teaching, and helps educators in material creation and visualization. Therefore, it is essential to equip both students and educators with AI literacy and digital material design competencies in order to support pedagogically sound and ethically responsible instructional practices. Within this context, the present study examines the extent to which an AI-integrated instructional technology course influences pre-service teachers’ AI literacy and digital material design competencies, as well as their perceptions and experiences of learning within an AI-integrated instructional environment. Using a mixed-methods approach, 50 pre-service social studies teachers (41 female, 9 male) participated in a semester-long course. Data were collected through the Artificial Intelligence Literacy Scale, Digital Material Design Competency Scale, and semi-structured interviews. Paired sample t-tests indicated significant gains in both AI literacy and digital material design competencies, with large effect sizes. Qualitative and quantitative findings showed that AI tools not only improved technical abilities but also enhanced pedagogical thinking. The study highlights the importance of AI-integrated curricula in preparing future teachers for modern educational challenges.

The effect of digital and traditional methods on learning and retention in preschool education: a comparison of virtual reality, augmented reality, web-based, and manipulative materials

    Tutkun, Cansu

The pedagogical use of digital technologies in early childhood education is increasingly prevalent today. Augmented reality, virtual reality, and web-based content have the potential to make children’s learning processes more interactive and lasting. In this context, the study compared the effects of different teaching methods presented with augmented reality, virtual reality, web-based, and manipulative (traditional) materials on children’s learning and retention levels. In the quasi-experimental study, a total of 400 children attending preschool education institutions in Bayburt, Turkey, were divided into four different groups and evaluated using a “pre-test–post-test–retention test” model. The results revealed that the virtual reality group achieved the highest scores in both learning and retention levels, followed by the augmented reality and web-based groups, while the manipulative group demonstrated the lowest performance. In addition, the virtual reality environment was evaluated by children as the most enjoyable and satisfying method, and children in this group were the most willing to use the training again. These results show that digital technologies such as virtual and augmented reality in preschool education should be evaluated as effective tools in terms of achieving pedagogical goals and increasing children’s interest in learning.

Exploring the transformative power of GenAI in education: an exploratory journey from social studies classes

    Yetişensoy, Okan

The potential of GenAI in educational settings has attracted considerable attention, yet practical explorations of its use in K-12 classrooms are still scarce. This research aims to explore the role of GenAI models in social studies, focusing on their influence on learning-teaching processes and understanding of AI. While exploring the influence of GenAI on pedagogical aspects from the perspective of the teacher and students, this qualitative study also embraces AI as a cross-curricular theme and seeks to understand how GenAI-supported teaching activities shape students’ AI understanding. The study group of this research, conducted according to the basic qualitative research design, consisted of 21 middle school students studying in one class and a social studies teacher who implemented the practices. The primary data collection tool for the research was semi-structured interview forms. In the relevant research, a teaching framework supported by GenAI, combining “Teaching with AI” and “Teaching about AI” was developed. During the four-week process, the practitioner teacher covered the curricular outcomes using lesson plans designed in alignment with this framework. In the semi-structured interviews, students stated that engaging in activities supported by GenAI not only made the learning process more effective and interesting but also enhanced their understanding regarding AI. The teacher highlighted that GenAI models encouraged constructivist learning environments, ensured the active involvement of all students, including those in inclusive education, and contributed to AI learning through their engaging structure. Additionally, the teacher highlighted technology’s drawbacks, including encouraging dependence on convenience and potentially providing inaccurate information. The relevant findings of the study, serving as first observations, are expected to provide valuable insights for future research. At this point, it is recommended that further studies be conducted to explore the transformative potential of GenAI in education, especially by employing experimental designs. An additional suggestion, on the other hand, is to disseminate AI throughout the entire curriculum of all subjects within a specific educational level as a cross-curricular theme, as opposed to limiting its teaching to merely a singular, isolated subject area.

A psychometric analysis of the artificial intelligence skills scale developed through chat gpt

Görgülü, Deniz; Coşkun, Fatma; Demi̇r, Mustafa; Si̇pahi̇oğlu, Mete

This study aims to examine the psychometric properties of a scale developed to measure teachers’ ability to use artificial intelligence tools in education. The scale was originally proposed as having 33 items across 5 sub-dimensions by Chat GPT-4, an AI system. To establish content validity, the scale form was submitted to expert review. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was then conducted on a sample of 347 teachers to determine if the 33-item, 5-subdimensional structure proposed by Chat GPT was confirmed by empirical data. The EFA results supported Chat GPT-4’s proposed structure. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was applied to a new sample of 603 teachers to assess the scale’s validity in an independent sample. The CFA results did not fully support the structure consisting of 33 items and 5 subdimensions proposed by Chat GPT. Reliability was analyzed using Cronbach’s Alpha and test-retest methods.

The effect of AI-powered chatbots in social studies education

    Yeti̇şensoy, Okan; Karaduman, Hıdır

The aim of this research is to investigate the educational potential of AI-powered chatbots in Social Studies learning-teaching processes. The study was conducted using embedded design, evaluated within the framework of mixed methods research. The study group consists of 78 6th-grade students studying in three different classes, along with one teacher who implemented the practices and guided the process. During the experimental phase of the study, lessons in the experimental group were taught by the practitioner teacher using an AI-powered chatbot named “SosyalciBot”. Meanwhile, lessons in two control groups were taught following the constructivist approach. At the end of the process, it was determined that the experimental group students’ post-test and permanency test scores were significantly higher than the control group students’ scores in both post-test and permanency test. In the semi-structured interviews, both students and the practitioner teacher provided positive evaluations of the pedagogical and design features of the chatbot, indicating that these features positively impacted the learning-teaching process. They also identified some shortcomings while offering suggestions for improvement. Based on the study findings, it is evident that chatbots have a high potential to contribute to Social Studies education. However, to fully harness this potential and achieve optimal effectiveness, further advancements and refinements in chatbot technology are required. At this point, it is recommended to conduct theoretical or applied studies focusing on developing chatbots with high communication capacity and explore innovative and constructive ideas regarding the integration of chatbots into educational environments.
