Investigation of the Effects of a Self-Heated Vest on Vital Values of Individuals: A Case Study on Public Health

    Öztekin, Erman Kadir; Demirci, Emre

With the adaptation of portable and harmless technological devices to clothing products, self-heating outdoor products are becoming more common in the market. These products can produce heat energy on their own, unlike standard thermally insulated products. In this way, it contributes to the thermal comfort of people in situations where the environment cannot be conditioned. In this study, the effects of these products, which are in close contact with the human body, on human health were measured through vital values. Measurements were collected from the same group of individuals at three different time intervals over 30 minutes. Significant differences between the obtained data were examined using the Friedman test and detailed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. While a significant difference was observed in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and body temperature data, no significant difference was found in oxygen saturation and pulse data. As for the actual changes, no serious effects on human health were observed based on the vital values presented in the study.

    Thermoeconomic Analyses of Heat Pumps

Öztekin, Erman Kadir; Gür, Mehmet Murat; Karaali, Rabi

Recently, the rapid development of technology and the increase in energy costs and needs have made reducing the costs and efficient use of energy and exergy important. The thermoeconomic analysis method, which is the best cost analysis method of energy and exergy, gives the ways to reduce costs and increase efficiency that can be applied a facility. It has been found that the most suitable thermoeconomic solution for winter heating and summer cooling of a facility is a vertical underground source heat pump and the most high-performance working fluid that should be used is R32. If the heating is done with a ground source heat pump instead of electrical energy, 4.25 kW of heating energy will be obtained for each kW of electrical energy given for heating, since the costs are COPIP 4.25. Here the earnings increase by around 325%. In other words, heating costs decrease by around 77.5 percent, that is, from one hundred liras to 22. 5 liras.

Thermal and energy analysis of a novel solar updraft tower design with divergent chimney and convergent collector concept: CFD analysis with experimental validation

Cuce, Pinar Mert; Saxena, Abhishek; Cuce, Erdem; Kontoleon, Karolos J.; Oztekin, Erman K.; Shaik, Saboor; Guo, Shaopeng

The fact that energy sources are heavily dependent on fossil fuels increases the need for alternative energy day by day. Solar energy is the most popular alternative energy source with massive potential. Solar chimney power plants (SCPP) are one of the systems of interest based on solar energy. SCPP systems are rare systems that can provide 24-hour power output. Their performance has been the subject of constant research since the first pilot plant in Manzanares. Design is crucial for performance figures of SCPPs, and the limitation of climatic parameters causes the system to be approached with different designs. This study makes a 3D CFD model by combining the divergent chimney and convergent collector structure based on the first pilot plant. The solar ray tracing algorithm and the RNG k-e turbulence model are applied and the model equations are solved under dynamic conditions with the reliable software ANSYS FLUENT. After the mesh-independent solution of the model is complete, it is validated with experimental data. The two cases are compared for solar radiation of 1000 W/m2 and environmental temperature of 293 K. A power output of 50.51 kW is achieved for standard pilot sizing. With the new model, the power output rises to 146.34 kW. It is seen that the divergent chimney and convergent collector affect the airflow in the system, increasing the maximum air velocity to 19.363 m/s. In parallel with the experimental data, it is seen that the temperature on the ground exceeds 360 K in the CFD results.

Investigation of Shale Gas Reserves in The World and A Case Study for Electricity Production from Shale Gas in Turkey

    Oztekin, Erman Kadir; Tozlu, Alperen

Shale gas reserves, which is globally accepted as unconventional gas resource, scattered around the world and can be used in order to meet the growing energy needs due to limited amounts of conventional resources. Since notable effort has to be put in order to investigate and drill shale gas resources the early decision has to be made carefully, especially considering the economic benefits. Several factors must be considered including the known technically recoverable shale gas amount at the selected region, current technology to drill the shale source and the amount of investment before the extraction of shale gas. In this study, global underground shale gas amount and recent discoveries as well as the potential shale gas areas in Turkey are presented. Benefits of using shale gas for electricity generation and common methods being used during shale gas extraction are studied along with gas and liquid flow mechanisms. At the end, general overview of separation and utilization of shale gas components is schematically presented. In the case study, the potential of electricity generation in the SE Anatolia region in Turkey is estimated with only using methane obtained from the shale gas purification process at the power generation step. According to the estimations, 3337.8 MW electric power may be generated for 50~55 years, at the appropriate gas engine by using 8.5 billion cubic meter shale gas annually.

Heat transfer enhancement in cylindrical fins through longitudinal parabolic perforations

Cuce, Erdem; Oztekin, Erman Kadir; Cuce, Pinar Mert

In our previous works, it is clearly addressed that optimisation of fin profile is of vital importance in terms of the rate of heat transfer from a hot surface, and the optimisation procedure depends on several factors. Within the scope of this research, a longitudinal cylindrical fin profile is under interest for the optimisation research. The purpose is to investigate the effects of longitudinal parabolic perforations on the fin parameters such as temperature distribution, effectiveness and efficiency, in which the fin surface is cooled by natural convection and radiation. Different concavity levels are considered to form parabolic perforations. The rate of heat transfer from fin surface is numerically correlated with the fin mass with respect to different concavity levels. According to results, heat transfer from unit fin mass is enhanced with the new designs. The outcome of the study can be used to optimise the needs for particular applications by making a decision between heat loss and weight options. That is, the increase in the concavity level of the perforation results in a lighter and cheaper design, but yielding a lower heat loss. However, heat transfer from unit mass is still enhanced.
