How to conceptualize the equal sign by middle school students?

    Türk, Adem; Öztürk, Mesut

This research examined middle school grade 5–8 students’ conceptualization of the equal sign. The study employed a cross-sectional approach. Eight middle school students studying in official public schools in Turkey participated in the study. The study’s data were collected through a clinical interview that utilized eight open-ended questions, covering topics such as arithmetic, pre-algebra, proportional relationship, and algebra. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the study data. Although previous studies showed that students saw the equal sign as write a result, the results of this research, which is a follow-up study, revealed that students did not think of the equal sign as write a result.

Self-Regulation and Mathematics Anxiety: The Conditional Mediating Role of Mathematical Language Self-Efficacy and Implications for Inclusive Education

Öztürk, Mesut; Ada Yildiz, Kübra; Charitaki, Garyfalia

In this quantitative study, we investigated the conditional mediating role of students’ mathematical language self-efficacy in the relationship between self-regulation and mathematics anxiety. The study employed a relational research design and included survey data from 706 middle school students attending public schools in Turkey. Findings indicated that both self-regulation and perceived self-efficacy in mathematical language use were significantly associated with mathematics anxiety. Moreover, the effect of self-regulation on mathematics anxiety was significantly mediated by students’ perceptions of their ability to understand and use mathematical language self-efficacy. The indirect effect was negative while the direct effect was positive, indicating a suppression (competitive mediation) effect, whereby self-regulation exerts both anxiety-reducing and potentially anxiety-inducing influences through different pathways. Conditional mediation analysis further revealed that this mediating effect varied as a function of students’ perceived academic support, with the indirect effect being non-significant for students who did not receive support. Measurement invariance across gender and grade level was examined to ensure that the constructs were measured equivalently across groups. These findings highlight the importance of fostering both self-regulation skills and mathematical language proficiency, particularly in contexts where students may lack sufficient support. These findings provide a theoretically grounded and practically relevant framework for understanding mathematics anxiety within inclusive mathematics education contexts.

Problem posing on vectors in space: preservice teachers’ perspectives

Ergin, Ayda Nur; Öztürk, Mesut; Aydin, Tuba Ağirman

This study examines preservice elementary mathematics teachers’ problem-posing processes related to vectors in space. Adopting a qualitative case study design, the problem-posing process was analyzed by treating the phases of orientation, connection, generation, and reflection as analytic units, focusing on the cognitive, linguistic, and reasoning-based actions exhibited at each phase. The findings reveal that preservice teachers experience considerable difficulties in establishing meaningful connections between mathematical structures and real-life contexts, particularly when posing vector problems in three-dimensional environments. In addition, causal attribution processes became salient during the reflection phase, with participants frequently explaining their successes and difficulties by referring to their conceptual understanding, prior experiences, and perceived competence. The results offer implications for the design of theory-based learning environments that support problem-posing processes in mathematics teacher education, particularly for advanced mathematical topics.

Charitaki, Garyfalia; Kourti, Isidora; Gregory, Jess L.; Ozturk, Mesut; Ismail, Zaleha; Alevriadou, Anastasia; Soulis, Spyridon-Georgios; Kypriotaki, Maria; Sakici, Sehnaz; Demirel, Can

This study aims to explore differences across Greece, the UK, the USA, Malaysia, Romania, and Turkey in terms of their attitudes towards inclusive education and validate the three-model structure for attitudes towards inclusion across the above six countries. All special education teachers were administered the ATTAS-mm scale. They were employed in mainstream schools or parallel support and/or resource classes in six countries. The identified differences were interpreted regarding the effect of years of teaching experience, educational work level of teachers, and the highest degree completed across the different participating countries. Two-step cluster analysis suggested a two-cluster solution for Greece, the USA and the UK, and a three-cluster solution for Malaysia and Turkey. Finally, years of teaching experience, educational work level, and the highest degree completed had a significant effect on teachers' attitudes towards inclusion in all countries. Results are discussed for their implications in teachers training.

Teachers’ Attitudes Towards Inclusive Education: a Cross-National Exploration

Charitaki, Garyfalia; Kourti, Isidora; Gregory, Jess L.; Ozturk, Mesut; Ismail, Zaleha; Alevriadou, Anastasia; Soulis, Spyridon-Georgios; Sakici, Şehnaz; Demirel, Can

The study aims to suggest a model for attitudes towards inclusive education that will yield a good fit across different countries. Moreover, we aim to explore the effect of years of teaching experience, educational work level of teachers, and the highest degree completed by teachers on teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion across different countries. A demographic scale and the ATTAS-mm were applied to 908 teachers employed in schools of general education or who offered parallel support and/or resources in five different countries (Greece, the UK, the USA, Malaysia, and Turkey). CFA suggested a 4-factor solution, which included the cognitive, affective, and behavioral factors that have been previously introduced by Gregory and Noto (2012), and a fourth factor, labeled overall attitudes towards teaching all students. In the cognitive factor, the UK had the most positive attitudes. TU, MA, and GR enrolled in the same cluster, and the USA had the least positive attitudes. In the affective factor, GR had the most positive attitude. MA and the USA enrolled in the same cluster and TU and the UK had the least positive attitudes. A similar pattern is observed for the behavioral factor with GR having the most positive attitude. TU and MA enrolled in the same cluster, and the USA and the UK had the least positive attitudes. Finally, years of teaching experience, educational work level, and the highest degree completed have a significant effect on teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion in all countries. Providing feedback for future research is the focal point of the discussion part.

Metacognitive training for algebra teaching to high school students: An action research study

    Okumuş, Özlem; Öztürk, Mesut

Metacognition is an essential concept in mathematics education research. Studies indicate that high school students in Turkey must demonstrate expected success in learning mathematics in general and algebra in particular. To this end, the Ministry of National Education has initiated a mathematical mobilization in Turkey. Mathematics mobilization is a project that will adapt the learning of mathematics to daily life skills, making learning more accessible and ensuring that students love this course from an early age. In the initial interviews with teachers as part of this mobilization, teachers stated that high school students needed to exhibit sufficient metacognitive planning and monitoring strategies. Therefore, they required assistance in planning and monitoring their learning processes and motivating them to learn. The literature shows that metacognitive planning and monitoring are effective in teaching algebra. In this context, the research “How can metacognitive strategies be developed in high school students’ algebra learning?” seeks an answer to this problem. Based on preliminary teacher interviews, the researchers created action plans in collaboration with teachers. In the circular model, researchers tested these action plans and revised them. As a result of the cycle being repeated three times, researchers developed a teaching technique based on metacognitive planning and monitoring for high school students. The study's findings demonstrate that metacognitive training taught students metacognitive planning, monitoring, prediction, awareness, and motivation strategies.

Sarikaya, Ismail; Ozturk, Mesut; Ozgol, Mustafa

This study was conducted to develop a valid and reliable measurement tool that can identify middle school students' self-regulation skills. Firstly, the literature was utilized in the development of the measurement tool. The form was finalized with the support of the opinions of different experts and a trial application. Then, the form was administered to 341 middle school students to determine its construct validity, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed on the collected data. Then, the form was administered to 341 middle school students to determine its construct validity, and exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed on the collected data. As a result of the study, it was determined that the scale consisted of 9 items and two sub-dimensions, namely forethought and volitional control and self-reflection. In order to reveal the reliability of the scale, internal consistency, two-half test analyses, and composite reliability (CR) were used, and it was determined that the values found were .74 and above. In order to reveal the accuracy of the obtained structure, data were collected from 218 middle school students in a different province, and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed with these data. As a result of the analysis, the two-factor structure of the scale was confirmed. When the findings are examined, it can be said that the scale is a reliable and valid tool that can be applied to determine the self-regulation skills of students studying at the middle school level.

An embedded mixed method study on teaching algebraic expressions using metacognition-based training

    Öztürk, Mesut

That the students are aware of the learning process and know how they learn is important in terms of both controlling their previous learning and building their new learning on the previous ones. This thinking process, which generally requires metacognitive skills, may facilitate the difficulties experienced by the students while passing on from arithmetic to algebraic thinking. This study had two purposes:(1) to examine the effect of the IMPROVE method, a metacognitive training method, on the academic achievement of middle school students regarding algebraic expressions and (2) to examine the teaching process of algebraic expressions with IMPROVE. This study was conducted as an embedded mixed design. Forty-nine sixth grade students participated in the quantitative part of the study, while only six students from the experimental group participated in the qualitative part. The quantitative results of the study showed that there was a significant difference between the students’ total achievement scores regarding algebraic expressions and the achievement scores in the questions requiring high-level thinking skills in favor of the experimental group. It has been found in the comparisons made based on cognitive field levels that there is a statistically significant difference in favor of the group that received metacognition-based education in synthesis level questions. The qualitative results indicated that this teaching method increased students’ interest, contributed to their conceptual learning and improved their various affective characteristics. Also, it has been determined that the students who receive metacognition-based education do enjoy learning with this teaching method and that they think this method should be sustainable for the upcoming lessons.
