Kubar, Yesim; Kurt, Duygu Baysal; Ketenci, Seyit Taha
Coffee producing countries have large production capacities, but the inefficient use of the income earned from the export of this product may have a negative impact on the economic growth rate. The fact that coffee producing countries are the world leaders in terms of coffee production and exports increases the possibility of the Dutch Disease problem in these countries. This has been the main motivation for investigating the existence of Dutch Disease in coffee-producing countries. In this study, the effect of Dutch Disease in the agricultural sector was analyzed by using the variables of coffee production amount, real exchange rate, GDP (gross domestic product), agricultural added value, exports, foreign direct investments and foreign trade deficit of Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Honduras, Mexico, Guatemala, Vietnam, Uganda, India, which produce the best coffee among the coffee producing countries and rank first in terms of production amount for the period 1989-2022. The long-term relationship between the variables was examined using the Pedroni panel cointegration test, and a significant cointegration relationship was found in the panel group. Long-term coefficient estimates were obtained using the Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) method. The coefficients were found to be statistically significant in both country-level and panel-level analyses. However, no direct evidence was found to support the existence of Dutch Disease. This finding was supported by the Hurlin panel causality test, which revealed that coffee production and exports did not lead to structural deterioration in the agricultural sector, indicating that no Dutch Disease effect was observed.

- MakaleYalnız künye2021The Determinants of Intra-Industry Trade in The Manufacturing Industry Between Turkey and The European Union Countries
Kurt, Duygu Baysal; Çoban, Orhan
Traditional foreign trade theories explain inter-industry foreign trade that\rarises from factor endowment differences. In other words, traditional\rforeign trade theories argue that inter-industry trade takes place between\rcountries with different levels of development. In this context, these theories\rare insufficient to explain foreign trade between countries with same levels\rof development. The concept of intra-industry trade was used to explain\rforeign trade between developed countries, and then it was also used for\rforeign trade between countries with different levels of development. When\revaluated from this point of view, the concept of intra-industry trade has an\rimportant place in both economics and foreign trade literature.\rWhen Turkey's foreign trade data is examined; EU (European Union) as a\rforeign trade partner and the manufacturing industry as a sector come to the\rfore. The main purpose of this study is to measure intra-industry trade\rbetween Turkey and EU countries in the manufacturing industry for the\rperiod 1996-2017 and is analyzing the determinants.\rIn the literature, there are many indices with static, semi-dynamic and\rdynamic properties to measure intra-industry trade. In this study, while\rmeasuring the level of intra-industry trade, GL (Grubel-Lloyd) index was\rused. Also, in the analysis that is revealed the determinants of intra-industry\rtrade, AE (Aquino) index in addition to GL index was used. System\rGeneralized Method of Moments (SGMM) was used for revealing the\rdeterminants of intra-industry trade between Turkey and EU countries\rTurkey in the manufacturing industry. According to the GL index, more\rthan 40% of foreign trade of Turkey’s manufacturing industry with Spain\rand Italy consists of intra-industry trade. According to the SGMM results,\rthe variables that are insignificant in both the GL index and the AE index are\rthe trade openness of the trading partner and border neighborhood. SGMM\rresults show that the increases of the GDP (gross domestic product)\rdifference, GDP per capita difference, trade openness difference, distance\rbetween the two countries and trade imbalance decrease intra-industry\rtrade in the manufacturing industry. In addition, the increases of the\raverage GDP of two countries, Turkey’s trade openness against the trading\rpartner and trade intensity raises intra-industry trade in the manufacturing\rindustry. It was determined that sharing the same sea, which is considered\ras a dummy variable in the analysis, positively affects intra-industry trade.
