Arici, Faruk
Inquiry-based learning (IbL) is widely recognized as an effective pedagogical approach in early science education; however, young learners often struggle to engage with abstract concepts and sustain inquiry processes. Augmented reality (AR) has the potential to address these challenges by enhancing interaction, visualization, and engagement in learning environments. Although previous studies have demonstrated the positive effects of IbL and AR separately, empirical evidence examining the combined impact of AR-supported IbL on preschool students’ academic achievement and scientific process skills (SPS) remains limited, particularly in early childhood science education. This study aimed to investigate the effects of AR-supported IbL, IbL alone, and the current preschool science curriculum on children’s academic achievement and SPS. In addition, participants’ perspectives on learning experiences, skill development, and instructional activities were explored. A mixed-methods design was employed with three groups: AR-supported IbL, IbL-only, and a control group following the existing curriculum. Quantitative data were collected using achievement and SPS assessments, while qualitative data were collected through repeated teacher observations and in-depth interviews conducted throughout the intervention. Results indicated that AR-supported IbL led to significantly higher academic achievement and SPS than IbL alone or the current curriculum. While IbL was more effective than the curriculum-based approach, integrating AR further strengthened inquiry cycles and particularly enhanced measurement, communication, and prediction skills. Observational and interview data supported these findings by revealing increased curiosity, engagement, and active participation. The findings suggest that integrating AR within inquiry-based pedagogical frameworks can substantially improve the effectiveness of preschool science education. Implications are discussed for curriculum design, teacher professional development, and the development of developmentally appropriate AR-supported learning environments.

Tutkun, Cansu; Eskidemir Meral, Seda
Introduction: Research has shown that children's social skills have effects on their problem behaviors. However, the mechanisms through which social skills contribute to reducing problem behaviors need further clarification. Methods: This study examined the relationship between preschool children's social skills and problem behaviors, as well as the independent and serial mediating roles of academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship in this relationship. The study included 382 children aged 3–5 years, randomly selected in Türkiye. Results and discussion: As a result of the study: (1) there was a significant and negative relationship between problem behaviors and social skills, academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship; (2) the mediating role of academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship in the relationship between social skills and problem behaviors was supported; and (3) the serial mediating role of academic self-esteem and teacher-child relationship in the effect of social skills on problem behaviors, respectively, was found. These findings indicated that children's social skills may help to increase their academic self-esteem, improve the teacher-child relationship, and thus reduce their problem behaviors. Therefore, these results have important implications for designing interventions to increase preschool children's social skills, academic self-esteem, and teacher-child relationship, as well as to prevent the early development of problem behaviors.

Özdemir Beceren, Burcu; Baydemir, Ceren; Arı Arat, Ceren
This study aimed to explore preschool teachers’ knowledge, perceptions, and classroom practices regarding social-emotional learning in early childhood education settings. The study was designed as a qualitative research study with a phenomenological approach and focused on the lived experiences of 10 preschool teachers working with children aged 3–6 in Çanakkale. Participants were selected through purposive and maximum variation sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and demographic forms. The interview questions were developed based on a literature review and expert feedback. Data were analyzed using both inductive and deductive content analysis techniques. Themes and sub-themes were formed collaboratively by the researchers. The findings revealed that preschool teachers define SEL mainly through themes such as social-emotional skills, learning methods, and peer education. Communication and empathy were emphasized as key components of SEL. Teachers' responses focused on specific aspects such as social-emotional skills, peer education and learning methods, and reflected a limited understanding of the broader and complex nature of SEL. Play-based learning and learning through role models were the most frequently mentioned methods. Peer education was also identified as a valuable tool in promoting SEL. Teachers expressed the need for more support and training in implementing SEL effectively. Preschool teachers recognize the importance of SEL and apply a variety of strategies in their classrooms. However, their understanding and practices vary depending on their experience and training. This study highlights the need for structured SEL training programs to enhance teachers’ skills and promote more consistent and effective SEL practices in early childhood education.
