- MakaleAçık Erişim2023Scopus SJRQ2Dynamic response of polypropylene honeycomb/polystyrene foam core sandwich composite panels: Experimental and numerical analysis
Caliskan, Umut; Demirbas, Munise Didem; Erdogan, Omer
In this study, dynamically loaded sandwich panels with two different core materials and face sheets made of aluminum alloys (6061-T6) were investigated experimentally and numerically under low-velocity impact. Polypropylene, PP (C3H6)n honeycomb and extruded polystyrene foam, XPS (C8H8)n were preferred as core material. By using the contact force and kinetic energy changes, which were the impact test results of the sandwich panels, the contact and impact resistance was examined. As a result of the tests, damaged regions and permanent central displacement were determined and energy absorption capabilities were demonstrated for two different structures. The results obtained were compared with the results obtained by the open finite element method. In this study, it was shown that the face-sheet thickness of sandwich panels was an important parameter affecting the impact behavior. The behavior of the core material when the face-sheet loses its rigidity was investigated and it was found that polystyrene foam was more effective in preventing impact damage. However, it was found that using the PP honeycomb or XPS was affected the impact behavior in different points.

This study presents an investigation of the seismic performance of a historical masonry minaret which was built in the 12th century in Bayburt. The minaret was built as masonry with regional stones and handmade bricks. The most important feature of the minaret is its longitudinally conical geometry. An experimental investigation was made to obtain the mechanical properties of the regional stone used in the historical minaret. A three-dimensional Finite Element Model of the historical minaret was created in SAP2000. Three earthquake ground motions such as Erzincan, Kocaeli-Duzce, and Van-Ercis were used to investigate the seismic performance of the historical minaret. The results show that Erzincan, Kocaeli-Duzce and Van-Ercis earthquakes may cause some damages in the same zone of the minaret body since the tensile stresses occurred due to the earthquakes exceed the limit tensile stress of the masonry brick. The use of the data obtained from the experimental investigation of the Bayburt yellow stone in the analysis is important for the reliability of the results.

This paper presents a dynamic analysis considering site-specific seismic characteristics for a masonry clock tower located at the city of Çorum, Turkey according to the new Turkish earthquake code. Finite element model of the tower was modeled using ANSYS software in order to determine numerical dynamic characteristics of the structure such as natural frequencies and mode shapes. Non-destructive experimental measurements were performed to extract the experimental dynamic characteristics. Experimental results were used as a reference parameter for finite element model updating to reflect the current structural behavior of clock tower. Model updating procedure was carried out by changing of initial material properties of structural stone elements, and maximum differences were reduced from 23.44% to 4.90%. Numerical results indicated that displacements have an increasing trend with the height of the clock tower. Furthermore, the maximum displacements occurred at the top point between the values of 18.88 mm to 42.5 mm. Numerical results also showed that both the maximum and minimum principal stresses occurred at the upper body (clock zone) walls and transition segment between the values of 1.08 MPa/2.86 MPa and − 0.87 MPa/−3.00 MPa, respectively. The maximum and minimum principal strains occurred at the upper body (clock zone) walls between the values of 0.65E-3/1.56E-3 and − 0.78E-3/−1.50E-3, respectively. It is also concluded that non-destructive experimental measurement is very useful method to evaluate in-situ structural identification, validate and update the initial finite element model for further analyses.

- MakaleYalnız künye2016ANALYSIS OF A LONG STRIP CONTAINING AN INTERNAL OR EDGE CRACK USING FEM
Yaylaci, Murat; Birinci, Ahmet; Adiyaman, Gokhan; Öner, Erdal
This paper presents the elastostatic plane problem of a long strip containing an internal or edge crack perpendicular to its boundaries. The plane problem consists of an infinitely long strip of thickness h. The infinitely long strip is loaded by uniformly distributed load and rests on two simple supports. It is assumed that the effect of gravity is neglected. The finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. Normalized stress-intensity factors for the cases with internal and edge crack, and normal stress (sigma(x)) for uncracked layer case are obtained for various dimensionless quantities. Finally, the results obtained from the finite element analysis are verified by comparing with analytical ones and it is seen that the results from finite element analysis indicate a good agreement with the analytical solution.

Öner, Erdal; Yaylaci, Murat; Birinci, Ahmet
This paper presents a comparative study of analytical method and finite element method (FEM) for analysis of a continuous contact problem. The problem consists of two elastic layers loaded by means of a rigid circular punch and resting on semi-infinite plane. It is assumed that all surfaces are frictionless and only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the contact areas. Firstly, analytical solution of the problem is obtained by using theory of elasticity and integral transform techniques. Then, finite element model of the problem is constituted using ANSYS software and the two dimensional analysis of the problem is carried out. The contact stresses under rigid circular punch, the contact areas, normal stresses along the axis of symmetry are obtained for both solutions. The results show that contact stresses and the normal stresses obtained from finite element method (FEM) provide boundary conditions of the problem as well as analytical results. Also, the contact areas obtained from finite element method are very close to results obtained from analytical method; disagree by 0.03-1.61%. Finally, it can be said that there is a good agreement between two methods.

- MakaleYalnız künye2014Scopus SJRQ2Comparison of the dynamic responses of gülburnu highway bridge using single and triple concave friction pendulums
Yurdakul, Muhammet; Ates, Sevket; Altunisik, Ahmet Can
The main object of this study is to determine and compare the structural behavior of base isolated long span highway bridge, Gülburnu Highway Bridge, using single concave friction pendulum (SCFP) and triple concave friction pendulum (TCFP). The bridge is seismically isolated in the design phase to increase the main period and reduce the horizontal forces with moments using SCFP bearings. In the content of the paper, firstly three dimensional finite element model (FEM) of the bridge is constituted using project drawings by SAP2000 software. The dynamic characteristics such as natural frequencies and periods, and the structural response such as displacements, axial forces, shear forces and torsional moments are attained from the modal and dynamic analyses. After, FEM of the bridge is updated using TCFP and the analyses are performed. At the end of the study, the dynamic characteristics and internal forces are compared with each other to extract the TCFP effect. To emphasize the base isolation effect, the non-isolated structural analysis results are added to graphics. The predominant frequencies of bridge non-isolated, isolated with SCFP and isolated with TCFP conditions decreased from 0.849Hz to 0.497Hz and 0.338Hz, respectively. The maximum vertical displacements are obtained as 57cm, 54cm and 44cm for non-isolated, isolated with SCFP and isolated with TCFP conditions, respectively. The maximum vertical displacement reduction between isolated with TCFP bearing and isolated with SCFP bearing bridge is %23. Maximum axial forces are obtained as 60619kN, 18728kN and 7382kN, maximum shear forces are obtained as 23408kN, 17913kN and 16249kN and maximum torsional moments are obtained as 24020kNm, 7619kNm and 3840kNm for non-isolated, isolated with SCFP and isolated with TCFP conditions, respectively.

Atmaca, Barbaros; Yurdakul, Muhammet; Ateş, Şevket
In this paper, it is aimed to determine the earthquake effects on cable-stayed bridge isolated by single concave friction pendulum bearings (SCFP). In this context, Manavgat cable-stayed bridge is selected as a numerical application. The selected bridge has 202. m composite deck and 42. m steel tower. 3D finite element models (FEM) of the base isolated and non-isolated bridge are modeled by using SAP2000. Three different earthquakes which are 11 December 1999 Düzce, 23 November 2011 Van and 13 March 1992 Erzincan earthquakes are subjected to the 3D FEM models in order to determine the seismic behavior of the bridges. BOL-090 and BOL-000; ERCIS-EW and ERCIS-NS; ERZ-NS and ERZ-EW components of ground motions obtained from PEER and AFAD are applied to the bridges at the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively. Nonlinear time history analysis is executed to determine the dynamic responses of the bridge. Comparison of dynamic behavior of isolated and non-isolated bridge with and without the SCFP bearings under three different earthquake motions has been conducted. The results obtained from analyses of 3D FEM of the bridge are presented by graphics and tables in detail. It is seen that using of isolation system reduces the destructive effects of earthquakes on the bridge.
