An Analysis of the Competitiveness of the Global Chocolate Industry: The Case of European Union Countries

    Kavacik, Mustafa; İzgi, Fatma

European Union stand out as the region with the largest share of the global chocolate market. Therefore, identifying how and in which countries chocolate can be positioned with a competitive advantage requires a detailed competitive analysis. The purpose of this study is to determine and assess the chocolate industry's level of global competitiveness throughout the 27 European Union member states from 2010 to 2022. In the analysis process, the Revealed Comparative Advantage Index, the Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage Index, the Trade Balance Index, and the Product-Mapping method were applied. In the literature, a product-mapping of the chocolate industry in European Union countries was first conducted, providing a competitive analysis in this context. As a conclusion of the competitiveness analysis of the chocolate sector in EU countries, six countries were identified as net exporters with comparative advantage (Group A), 11 countries as net-importers with comparative advantage (Group B), and 10 countries as net-importers with comparative disadvantage (Group D).

Artificial Intelligence Applications in International Trade: A Bibliometric Analysis

    Aktepe, Cemalettin; İzgi, Fatma

Artificial intelligence is having an increasingly significant impact on the functioning of international trade, productivity dynamics, and policy processes today. This study examined the role of artificial intelligence applications in international trade and identified research trends in the field using a bibliometric approach. The study analyzed 146 articles published between 1981 and 2025, using the keywords ‘international trade’ and ‘artificial intelligence applications’ in the Web of Science database on 4 September 2025. Subject areas and document types were considered during the search process; publication trends, collaborations between countries and institutions, the most-cited studies, and keyword networks were evaluated using VOSviewer. The findings show that academic output in the fields of artificial intelligence and international trade has increased rapidly, particularly since 2018, with 2024 exhibiting the highest publication volume. It was found that most studies were concentrated in the field of Business Economics. The analysis results clearly reveal that the United States, the United Kingdom, and China are leaders in both publication and citation counts. The original contribution of this study is that, unlike bibliometric studies commonly found in the literature that approach the relationship between ‘artificial intelligence and international trade’ from a general perspective, it addresses the subject from an international trade perspective, focusing on artificial intelligence applications. In this respect, the study provides a more targeted contribution to the field by revealing both the direction of development in the literature and the application areas in which artificial intelligence is concentrated in trade processes.

    Aktepe, Cemalettin; İzgi, Fatma

The defense industry has recently received attention due to its significant advancements. This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the financial performance of companies operating in the Turkish defense sector. The financial data from 2019 to 2023 of defense industry firms listed on Borsa Istanbul, namely ASELS, OTKAR, PAPIL, SDTTR, NETAŞ, and KATMER, were analyzed. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the financial performance of these companies during the pandemic by comparing it with the pre-pandemic period. In this context, eight financial ratios related to liquidity, turnover, financial structure, and profitability were utilized to assess financial performance. The criteria weights were determined using the Entropy method, and the performance rankings of the companies were established through Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) techniques, including TOPSIS, EDAS, and CoCoSo. This study offers a novel perspective by examining the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on Turkish defense industry firms and uncovering their financial performance in comparison to previous periods. According to the results of the entropy method, the most significant criteria for evaluating the financial performance of companies listed on Borsa Istanbul (BİST) are Active Profitability Ratio (APR) and Equity Profitability Ratio (EPR). In the year 2020, which was significantly impacted by the pandemic, companies with strong financial performance included ASELS, PAPIL, SDTTR, and NETAŞ. Conversely, KATMER was identified as one of the companies with weaker financial performance during the same period.

    İzgi, Fatma; Kavacık, Mustafa

The global economy significantly relies on the air conditioning sector, which has been gaining increased importance worldwide and in Türkiye due to the impact of global warming, climate change, and the diminishing energy resources. As a multifaceted industry encompassing air conditioning, heating, installation, insulation, refrigeration and ventilation sector has been adapting to the growing demand for environmentally friendly and energy-efficient solutions. This study analyzes air conditioning industry of Türkiye and its sub-product groups in terms of its ability to compete internationally, spanning from 2001 to 2021. To assess competitiveness, we employed various analytical tools, including Balassa's Revealed Comparative Advantages Index (RCA), Vollrath Indices (RXA, RMP, RTA, RC), Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantages Index (RSCA), Trade Balance Index (TBI), and Product Mapping method. Notably, there is no research that scrutinize the competitiveness of the Turkish air conditioning industry utilizing the Product Mapping. The study findings emphasize that air conditioning industry of Türkiye has competitiveness. Within the sub-product group, the analysis reveals that Türkiye has competitiveness for 11 products, a near-limit competitiveness for 3 products, and a lack of competitiveness for 10 products.
