Learning outcome literacy: The case of five elementary mathematics teachers

    Akdeniz, Dilsad Güven; Argün, Ziya

Learning outcome (LO) literacy is conceptualized as a necessary skill for planning teaching and learning activities effectively. The skill has two main components: understanding and interpreting learning outcomes. The current study aimed to identify learning outcome literacy of elementary mathematics teachers with regard to this conceptualization. It is a case study based on the qualitative design. Participants were 5 mathematics teachers working at different elementary (5th - 8th grade) schools in Turkey. Observations and semi-structured interviews were used for data collection based on 10 learning outcomes selected from algebra and number learning domains in local mathematics curriculum. Content analysis method was used for data analysis. According to the findings, LO literacy can be regarded as a basic teacher competence and it requires the teacher to use the knowledge and skills he/she has. The results showed that participant teachers' LO literacy was insufficient. Considering the interrelation among its components, LO literacy should be developed with all the sub-components for effective teaching of LOs.

The power of graphic organizers: Effects on students' word-learning and achievement emotions in social studies

    Ilter, Ilhan

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of three graphic organizers for teaching vocabulary and the development of the emotions-related to achievement. The study focused on the effects of different types of graphic organizers on word-learning and various emotions in social studies. This study was designed as a quasi-experimental design by utilizing a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group was instructed on vocabulary by using the Concept definition map, a Word-questioning strategy and a Circle thinking map for word-learning, while the control group was taught to use the C(2)QU [(Context (2)-Questioning-Using)] as a process of learning new vocabulary from context. The participants of this study were fourthgrade students from a state school in Bayburt, Turkey. The results indicated that the graphic organizers group was more successful than the comparison group in terms of improving general word recognition knowledge and meaningful leaps in acquisition of target word meanings. In addition, it was found that using different types of graphic organizers developed positive achievement emotions (i.e., enjoyment, hope and pride) more than contextual learning process in social studies.

The views of mathematics teachers on the factors affecting the integration of technology in mathematics courses

    Kaleli-Yilmaz, Gül

The aim of this study was to determine the views of mathematics teachers on the factors that affect the integration of technology in mathematic courses. It is a qualitative case study. The sample size of the study is 10 teachers who are receiving postgraduate education in a university in Turkey. The current study was conducted in three stages. At the first stage, software and learning objects were introduced to the teachers. At the second stage, activities were performed with the teachers. At the third stage, teachers practiced a technology-assisted course in a real classroom environment. After all stages were fulfilled, a retrospective interview was conducted with all teachers individually. The content analysis of the interviews indicated that there are many factors affecting technology integration, namely, the categories of teacher-based factors, student-based factors, content-method-resource-timemanagement based factors and technical considerations.
