The study employed a cross-sectional approach. Eight middle school students studying in official public schools in Turkey participated in the study. The study’s data were collected through a clinical interview that utilized eight open-ended questions, covering topics such as arithmetic, pre-algebra, proportional relationship, and algebra. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the study data. Although previous studies showed that students saw the equal sign as write a result, the results of this research, which is a follow-up study, revealed that students did not think of the equal sign as write a result.</dc:description><dc:publisher>Springer Science and Business Media B.V.</dc:publisher><dc:date>2026</dc:date><dc:type>Article</dc:type><dc:identifier>https://rdlopen.rawdatalibrary.net/r/bayburt/12798</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>https://doi.org/10.1007/s13394-026-00573-4</dc:identifier><dc:identifier>1033-2170</dc:identifier><dc:language>en</dc:language><dc:relation>Mathematics Education Research Journal</dc:relation><dc:rights>info:eu-repo/semantics/closedAccess</dc:rights><dc:type>info:eu-repo/semantics/article</dc:type><dc:identifier>https://bayburt-rdlopen.rawdatalibrary.net/tr/items/bayburt/12798</dc:identifier></oai_dc:dc></metadata></record></GetRecord></OAI-PMH>
